Local Vendor Spotlight

Like many entrepreneurs, Meg Eldridge of generationMe got her start by finding creative solutions to a challenge of her own. An eco-conscious and budget-savvy mother of four, Meg was concerned about the amount of consumables purchased and waste generated by her six-member household. To cut down on expenses and waste their first switch was to cloth diapers instead of disposables. She found those and other reusable cloth items much easier to use than expected, and started making them herself.

When Meg’s sister passed from cancer she became especially motivated to re-evaluate their lifestyle. She cleared the house of all chemicals and started makingher own natural cleaners. The result, according to Meg, was “pretty much everything that is physically possibleto make instead of buy, I make”.

In 2010 friends started asking Meg to sew them the high-quality cloth items she was creating for herself. Her first party to sell the items to friends was an unexpectedly huge success. With abackground in finance and a family of entrepreneurs and business owners, Meg recognized a business opportunity when she saw one and founded generationMe.

Over five years generationMe has grown to serve thousands of customers online, at sustainable living events, the Beloit Farmers Market and on consignment at Basics. Meg works with six independent contractors at busy times, to keep up with making each piece by hand.

generationMe offers:

generationMe reusable products are located in aisles 5 and 7 at Basics. Meg will also be at the store 9am-12pm Super Tuesday April 7th with a wider selection of pieces and designs.

Did You Know?Trusting Supplement Labels

A study conducted by the New York Attorney General was published in February stating that dietary supplements sold by Walmart, Walgreens, Target and GNC either could not be verified to contain the substances on the label, or contained ingredients not listed on the label.Unfortunately, these discoveries have the effect of eroding the reputation of the industry as a whole. They perpetuate the myth that dietary supplements are not regulated and cannot be trusted- but this is far from the truth. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires a set of current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) for

dietary supplements that ensure they are produced in a quality manner, do not contain contaminants or impurities, and are accurately labeled. Under the final rule, manufacturers are required to evaluate the identity, purity, strength, and com-position of their dietary supplements.

If dietary supplements contain contami-nants or do not contain the dietary ingredient they are represented to contain, FDA would consider those products to be adulterated or misbranded. Penalties fall under the same laws as adulterating or misbranding foods, and depending on the circumstancescan include anything from mandatory recalls to monetary fines or jail time.

Reputable supplement manufacturers not only meet the cGMP standards of the FDA, they have additional methods in place to ensure the identity, potency, purity and composition of their products. They state those processes on the label, if space, or in product literature, and make the test re-sults readily available.

For examples of how several of the brands sold at Basics go above and beyond to verify the purity and po-tency of their products, visit the Basics website and click on About, Our Vitamins & Supplements (Wellness).

We receive many requests by Co-op Owners to extend their ownership discounts to family or friends in town for the holidays, or friends who have joined them for a trip to see what it’s all about. While we cannot allow regular use of ownership rights to individuals who are not Co-op Owners and have not invested in the Co-op, we do appreciate referrals! To encourage friends and family to come in and see what it’s like to be an Owner, we have created Family & Friend Co-op passes.

Each active Co-op Owner (fully vested or up to date on installments) has access to two Family & Friend Co-op passes for use now through the end of 2015. The pass will allow your friend or family member to use your Owner ID number at checkout for one shopping trip on any day of their choosing! The new passes are available for pickup at Customer Service.

Farm to School in Rock CountyThe mission of UW-Extension is to “teach, learn, lead and serve, connecting people with the University of WI, and engaging them in transforming lives and communities.” The Rock CountyUW-Extension office, located in the County Courthouse in Janesville, offers a variety of programs in the areas of 4-H, Horticulture, Agriculture, Family Living, and Nutrition Education. The Rock County Farm to School (F2S) Program in Rock County is also housed in this office, and a recent grant has allowed for the addition of 2 Americorps workers to focus exclusively on F2S.

What is F2S?F2S empowers children and their families to make informed food choices while strengthening the local economy and contributing to vibrant communities. In the 2011-12 school year, 1,131 WI schools participated in F2S activities. In the 2012-13 school year, 193 schools/districts procured local food. There are currently133 school gardens in WI. These numbers continue to grow.

The goals of the Rock County F2S program are to: 1) increase the entire community’s knowledge about agriculture, food, nutrition, and the environment; 2) create a strong F2S network;

3) incorporate more nutrition education in our schools; 4) support school and community gardens; and 5) strengthen the local economy by supporting Rock County farmers.

F2S staff is actively working to increase in-class nutrition lessons and taste tests in local schools across the county. Special events such as the Great Apple Crunch, celebrated in October of 2014, help to bring F2S efforts into the schools. Working with F2S, several schools have procured locally grown food for their lunchrooms. Recent examples include Orfordville- apples from Jess’s Apple Orchard, Edgerton- local apples from Hawk’s Orchard, and local farm Amazing Grace Family F.A.R.M. provid-ed the entire School District of Janesville with broccoli.

School gardens and gardening programs have increased greatlyin recent years. Beloit schools are currently working to plant

school gardens at all elementary schools. Clinton currently has a hydroponics program in their middle school. Local farm land has been donated to agricultural programs in both Edgerton and Orfordville in an effort to enable students to have authentic farming experiences.

To date, the Rock County F2S coalition (a group of interested farmers, school district representatives, and community members) has granted over $9,000 to schools throughout the county to start gardens, acquire kitchen equipment, and train school cafeteria workers to effectively and efficiently work with fresh produce.
