Retirement Success Driven By Series of Good DecisionsProvided by David A. Vudragovich, a inancial representative with Capital Financial Group, LLC, a general agency of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) and other companies, courtesy of MassMutual.

What is the sign of a good decision?SM

It’s assessing and then addressing what is most important to your family and its fi nancial future. If you are like many Americans, the recent economic downturn has thrown your family budget for a loop.

Many have readjusted their spending habits to such an extent that there is now a new normal. For example, they no longer shop as much as or where they used to; they may indulge in a staycation, rather than a true getaway; and items that were previously considered to be necessities have been relegated to the “can’t aff ord” or “not needed” category. If you think these are temporary changes, think again. Many economic analysts feel that these new attitudes are here to stay.

Your personal economyYou probably know someone who has been laid off or personally impacted by these challenging economic times. And even if you have been fortunate enough

to remain employed, you may have been aff ected by the fallout from declining retirement plan balances. And, similar to the changing fi nancial attitudes that resulted from Great Depression, the diffi cult times resulting from what many now call the Great Recession have forced many families to take a step back and take a long, hard look at their fi nances—and where they want to be fi nancially in the future.

Tips to help improve your economic futureHere are some tips to help you take stock of your overall economic picture:

❏ Determine what is really important.

❏ Cut back, even if it hurts (a little).

❏ Become a dedicated saver.❏ Run your numbers.❏ Get the help you need.

Call David at 865-806-5837. to discuss your personal needs.

If you’re looking to add fresh flavor and good nutrition to your menu, look no further than the humble avocado. In a salad, as a spread or slider topper, or even on the grill (yes, they can be grilled), avocados are packed with healthy goodness.

“A lot of people don’t know just how good California avocados are for you,” said Ben Holtz, President of California Avocados Direct. “They have nearly 20 essential nutrients – that’s a lot of good nutrition packed into a great tasting fruit.”

According to Holtz, • Avocados have mono and polyunsaturated “good” fats that are recommended

as part of a healthy diet; they can help reduce blood cholesterol levels and decrease your risk of heart disease.

• Avocados are rich in beta-sitosterol, which helps lower cholesterol levels. Studies have shown an average drop in cholesterol of 17 percent after consuming avocados for only one week.

• Avocados contain 60 percent more potassium than bananas.

Holtz says that avocados are best when they’re as fresh as possible, during peak consumption periods when the fruit moves quickly off the shelves. “This is wonderful for those that live near the growing areas in California, but not so easy for everybody else living across the country. That’s why we started California Avocados Direct – to offer fresh avocados to those who want to buy the best available, and who want to know the farmer that grew them.”

Holtz says that they are able to hand pack and ship fresh avocados the very same day they’re harvested, letting them share farm-fresh produce with families all across the country. “As a family farm, we live on and care for the land,” he said. “This allows us to give daily attention to detail and the ability to deliver the rich, creamy flavor of premium California avocados that our customers have come to expect.”

An avocado lends itself to a variety of seasonings and ingredients that mix well with almost all salad and sandwich fillings. The next time you break out the grill for friends and family, try these Haute Grilled Avocados as a deliciously different appetizer or side dish.

Flexibility. If you have ever payed attention to a cat or dog when they first awake, they stretch. This is there God given instincts. Spend a good 10 minutes per day, morning preferably stretching legs, arms, back, etc. You may consider enrolling in a Yoga class or stretching program.

endurance. Building up your endurance takes time, but worth the investment. You can build endurance by walking, working in the yard or joining a gym. By building your endurance for exercise up to just 20 minutes per day for three times a week, you will be amazed at the extra energy you will find!

Support and motivation are very important when it comes to goals, so it may be a good decision to join a health club or gym. Although these organizations generally require a monthly membership fee, you may find that this will motivate you to go on a regular basis. You could also take advantage of your local senior center which offers many different affordable classes including dance and Yoga. Whether you choose a gym or senior center, the point is to surround yourself with people that share the same goals as yourself.

The benefits of exercise are remarkable as we age. My dad was 65 when he began an exercise program and when he was 75; he was in the best shape of his life! Of course, always check with your physician before embarking on any new exercise program.
