[email protected] Daddy always carried apocket knife. When I wasgrowing up in the 50’sand 60’s all the men andolder boys had a knife.Someyoungerboyscarriedknivestoo.Itwasjustadif-ferentera.Now,youwouldbeexpelled fromschool if

youhadapocketknife,sodon’tcarryonetoschool. I was fascinated withall the uses Dad had forhisknife.Heusedthethinshort blade as a screw-driver when the real thingwasn’t available. Whenpackages or gifts neededtobeopened,outcamethepocketknifetocutthetapeor the string. Daddy alsosharpened many a pencilfor me when I was doingmy homework. He couldevengetasplinteroutofafingerwithaknife. You definitely neededa knife for fishing to sniplinesforcanepoles,tocleansunfish,andtocutlengthsofropetotietarpsbetweentreestokeepoutthesun. One of my favoritethingstodowastowhittleonpiecesof cedarorpineoranythingelseIcouldget

myhandswithDad’sknife.I remember cutting mythirdfingerwhentryingtocut up some tough squashthatwaspastharvest.Icutan“L”outofmyfinger. Igotalittlescartoshowforit,Ididn’ttrythatagain. In later years Daddycollected pocketknives, hefoundsomeatfleamarketsI guess and he had fourgirlswhoboughthimsomefor Christmas presents.I bought him a Masonicknife; I don’t rememberwho received it after hepassed. I always liked them forthe pretty colors of mate-rialsof theoutercolorsofthe pocketknife. Like therichdarkwood,theanimalbone, the mother of pearl,andtheshinymetal. The one most precioustomeisonehegavemea

couple of years before hepassed and I didn’t reallywanthimtogive it tome.Ihadtakenhimtothedoc-torinLexingtonandwhenwegotbacktohishousehekeptaskingme,“WhatdoIoweyou?” I said, “Dad you don’towemeanything,Iamgladto takeyouandMother tothedoctoranytime.” Hejustkeptonandinaminuteheslippedthislittleknifeinmyhandandsaid,You won’t take any mon-ey, you take this knife; ofcourseIcried,ItoldhimIdidn’twanttokeepitbuthewouldn’thush. Ikept it tomakehimhappy. TheknifeisonemymostcherishedthingsthatIhavethatbelongedtomyDaddy.I can still hear his wordsthat day. I love him andmisshimsoverymuch.

A few years ago two elderly men were discuss-ingthepowerthatSatanwasabletoweldovermen.Onesaid;“Well, Iamsavedandsanctifiedand thedevilneverbothersmeatall.”Theotherreplied:“Ican’tsayasthisfellowsays,becausethedeviltriestounderminemyeffortsasaChristianeveryday,andbesidesthis,IbelievethathewillbesnatchingatmycoattailasIentertheportalsofHeaven.”Now,asalong timepreacher, I can’t agreewith this first fel-low,butasonewhohasbeeninthetrenchesoftheat-temptedteachingandpreachingthegospel,IcansayunequivocallythatSatanhasfoughtmeeverystepoftheway,andIdon’texpecthimtostop.IpersonallyrememberthatwhenIjustbegantogainnotorietyasapreacherandwasbaptizingseveralpeoplealongtheway,butSatanwasnotgoingtoletthiscontinuetohappen.Hewouldcausesomepeopletoriseupandresistmyeffortsoftryingtostrengthenandtopurgethechurchofsinfulpractices,andhewouldusethepeople to encourage their friends and familymem-berstostartimproperslandertoruinmyestablishedcredentialsasafaithfulgospelpreacher.Some,tomyamazement,evenstartedastorydeclaringthatIbe-lieved in divorce for any reason.Plainly, Matthew 19;1-8 shouldbeveryclearupon this subject.Thiscontinuedbehindmybackforseveralyearswithoutevenknowingandhavingtheopportunitytoconfrontthem.OnetimeafamilymembertoldsomechurchbrethrenthatIhadstolenahomefullofjunkthatbe-longedtoanotherfamilymember,butthesickest,andthesaddestthingwastoldbrethrenfromchurchesinnearbycitiesbelievedandpassediton,mostwhodidnotevenknowwhoIwas.HowcanChristianbreth-renbecomesofickleanddestructive? I wrote some time back an article that I called:“What does one do when life throws you a curve ball?” ThisIcanclearlysay:thatwhenIfirstbeganmyministry,Idoubtiftherehavebeenanymenthatwereasenthusedanddeterminedtobeasuccessfulpreacherasmyself.MyeveryhourwasgiventothoughtsabouthowcanImakemylifemoreeffectiveforChrist,butboyhasSataneverthrownasmanycurveballsatme.NowIamnotcomplaining,butamIangry.Yes,Ihatethedevilandallhestandsfor,butatthesametime,myJesussaysinMatthew 10:5,“If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub (devil) how much more shall they call them of his household?”Soletthedevilcontinuehisassaults,becauseIamdeterminedbyfaithinJesustodefecthim.

pearsinGenesis1.Bothpassages of Scriptureexpressonetheme:“Theglory,powerandmajestyof our God rest upon allofHiscreation.”Hismightcanbeseeneverywhere:the skies, the seas, onland, in the wilderness;in the mighty mountainranges, the terrible re-sults from bolts of light-ningwhentheystriketheearth. His power is seenwhenanimalsgivebirthtotheiryoung.Hecanevenbeseeninthedesertre-gions!ThegloryofGodisrevealed wherever manlooks! Some may refuse tohearHisvoiceorhavenodesiretorespectthepow-erinthatvoice.Thoseofuswhodo,however,areblest.Yet,weareleftwithtwo nagging questions:Whyhavewebeencho-sentoseethepowerandmajestyofGodwhileoth-erscannotseeHim?Andthen, what is our obliga-tiontoGodandtothem?
