Chapter 15 Noun clauses: Tell where they go in sentences and why

Example test question. Answer the question with a noun clause. Teacher: What is the answer to the question? Student: I don’t know what the answer to the question is. Be able to identify noun clauses and what part of the sentences they are. Example test question: Put ( ) around the noun clause and above it write what part of the main clause sentence it is. Object of the verb “think” My dad doesn’t think (the team will win many games this season.) Writing: Reported Speech: Write reports for these conversations. Your reports should include an accurate idea of the speaker’s words, but they don’t have to use the exact words. Make the statements indirect. Connect the sentences into complex, compound sentences that connect. Answers will vary. Example: Lynne said, “I had a wonderful vacation.” Neil said, “That’s good. What did you do?” Lynne answered, “I went skiing in Montana. The snow was perfect.” Possible answers. There are many ways to report this, so answers will vary After Lynne said that she had had a wonderful vacation, Neil replied that that was good but then asked what she did, so Lynne answered that she had gone skiing in Montana and that the snow had been perfect. When Neil asked Lynne what she did on vacation, Lynne replied that she had had a wonderful vacation skiing in Montana because the snow had been perfect. Then Neil said that that was good. When Lynne said that she had had a wonderful vacation, Neil said that was good and asked what she did on her vacation. Lynne responded by explaining how she had gone skiing in Montana and that the snow had been perfect. 3. C I love to go dancing, but I often feel awkward. (these two are independent clauses with the conjunction “so”)

Identify Verbs and parts of sentences: Circle transitive if the verb takes an object; circle intransitive if it does not; circle linking if it has a subject complement after it. Know the question pattern for each type of question. Write the patterns here: Non “be” verb questions: Information: QW + HV + S + MV + …? Yes/No: HV + S + MV + …? Be verb questions: Information: QW + be + S + ….? Yes/No: be + S + …?

1. Noun clause: Can you tell me how long you have taught here?

2. Adjective clause: What is the name of the school you taught at last year?

3. Gerunds or infinitives: Do you intend to teach for many more years?

4. Passive voice: How many students were found cheating in your classes?

Editing: Be able to correctly edit circled mistakes using the process of the class. You will be able to use your tip worksheet here for writing the correct questions. Points for identifying the error, writing the correct question to focus your thinking, explaining what you need to do and telling why by using the context of the sentence. Practice: 1. I had bought a house since my first kid was born.

1. Conjunction mistake Do I need to show that this action happened before another action in the past? Yes I do. The “since” clause shows when the action first started, so the action of buying a house didn’t start before that. It wasn’t possible. “since” is a time word conjunction for present perfect. So I need to change the conjunction to “before” because the action of buying the house happened first: before my first kid was born.

I had bought a house before my first kid was born.

Listening:

Listen to the stories and the teachers questions answer the questions.
