Hayisaverydifficultthingtopurchaseandknowexactlywhatyouaregetting.Theriskoffeedingsuspecthaytoahorseisnotworthtryingtosaveafewdollarsonthehay.Hereareafewthingstolookforwhentryingtodetermineifyourhayisbad:
--thereshouldbeabsolutelyNOmold.
--itshouldbesweet-smelling.-almostmatted--flakesshouldfall
apart.Yourhayhastwosignsthattellyouitmightbebad--flakesstickingtogetherandadustyappearance.Alsocheckthestemsofthehayontheendsofthebalesveryclosely.Thestemsorstalksofthehay"wick"themoistureoutoftheairandupintothecenterofthebale.Ifthebaleshadahighmoisturecontenttostartwithorgotwet,youhaveamuchhigherchanceofruiningthehay.Remember,anymoldormildewonhorsehayisnot
acceptable.Alotoftimesthehaywilllookgoodontheoutsidebutifyoubreakitapartitwilllookdustyandhaveamustysmell--thisisbadhay.Thereisalwaysachancethatthehaycamefromaverydustyfield,butthisisnotusuallythecase.Differenttypesofgrassaremorepronetospoilagethanothersandwetclimatesmakeithardertokeephaytoo.Saltinghaywillhelpabsorbthemoistureofwethay,butifyourhayisalreadyshowingsignslikethisit'stoolate.

Members discussed the Fortuna Rodeo Paradeseveral members showed an interest in riding in the parade. The pwill be held onSaturday,July18th,on MainStreet inFortuna. Jerry Tindell is considering coming to the Ferndale Fairgrounds for ano
clinic this fall. He has tentatreserved the dates of October 1through the 18th. Jerry and his crewhoping to have enough interested howners to set the dates. The clinichave a 2-day beginners and a 2advanced class.
