    Thereareprobablyasmanyjokesaboutgettingamule'sattentionwithatwo-by-fourastherearepickuptrucksinTexas.Whenyouareteachingyourhorsetoheed,youmustkeepbringingitsattentionbacktoyou.Butyoudon'twanttouseatwo-by-four.Youdon'twantdoalotofexcitingorloudthingsthatwillcausethehorsetodoalotofexcitingorloudthings.Youwanttousebodypositionandbodylanguagethatisnoticeabletothehorsetokeepitsattentionorsenditinthedirectionyouwant.Icallthis"heeding."

    Forexample,standatthehorse'sfrontlegswithyourbeltbucklefacingitsshoulderasyouscratchthehorse.Continuetokeepthelinethroughyourshouldersparalleltothehorse'sbodyallthetimeyouarescratchingandrubbinghim.Ifyoufindaplacethehorsereallylikesbeingscratched,youhavehisattentiononyou.Yourgoalistocaptivatethehorse,tokeepthehorseheedingeverythingyoudo,payingattentiontoeverythingyoudo.Andeverythingyoudo,youdoinaperceivablepatternwithacalmattitude.

    Horsesonlypayattentiontoonethingatatime.Theireyesareoutonthesidesoftheirheadtoseeanyapproachinattackerandtheirinstinctstellthemtoconstantlylookoutforthoseattackers.Thissuperbperipheralvisioniswhamakesitsoeasytogethorsestoheedyourbodyposition.Theycanseeallthewaytothebackoftheirhindquarterwithjustaslighttiltoftheirhead.Butwhatgetstheirattentionkeepschangingallthetime.

    Whentheirattentiongoesawayfromyou,yourgoalistogetitbaWhensomethingintheirenvironmentputsaquestionintheir

    mindanddivertstheirattention,youwantthemtocomebacktoyoufortheanswer.

    Theyoungerahorseisthemoreitperceivesanythingsuddenorunusualasdangerousbecausethereislessinformationinitsmemorybank.Naturaldefensemechanismsandinstinctsaremolikelytocontrolitsbehavior.Soifyou'reteachingareallybabyhorsetoheed,itsattentionjustnormallydartsallovertheplace.I

    eport for February. It was moved by Bev Harvey, seconded by Nancy

    ORRESPONDENCE: Carolereportedshe had received an emailfrom

    ete Kriger and he has started his cancer treatments appreciates ourrayers and support. A flier for the 2010 Redwood Environmental

    ducation Fair for May 27 and 28, at College of the Redwoods was

    ceived. A flier for the North Bay Ride, May 14-16, 2010 was also

    eceived. Maris had received a thank you note fromSef Murgias widow

    boutourdonationtothetrailsfund.

    OMMITTEEREPORTS:

    . Public Lands - Carole submitted the Public Lands report. A copy is

    tached.A discussionwas held onthe closureofClamBeachto vehicles.

    . Public Liaison - Mort Scott reported that a major slide has closed

    meeting was held. The consensus was to recommend to the Un

    A discussion was held on paying for additional Board members to

    Rendezvous 2010. This would be a one-time approval. When

    determined how many additional members would go, if any, the na

    carried to approve paying for two additional Board members to

    B. Stanshaw Ride - The proposed ride at Stanshaw was discusse

    C. Rhododendron Parade - It was moved by Jacque Murphy, secon

    A. The March/April issue of The Trail Rider magazine has an article statingthatthe Back Country Horsemen of America has bawarded a technical assistance grant by the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance group of the National Park Service. T

    grant is expected to provideBCHA members with the tools to develop effective, long-term relationships with landmanagers olevelsofpubliclands(federal,state,andlocal).

    A.TheBoardofSupervisorsapprovedtheinstallationofthefencingatClamBeachfortheSnowyPlovernestingseason.Theyatemporarily closed Clam Beach to vehicle access dueto people trying to drive through PatricksCreek.Between75to100vehiwere damaged trying to cross and one caused a potential hazard from oil spilling. Third District Supervisor Mark Lovelace hadownwordsofwisdomforthecrossings."Iowna4x4(vehicle)andIwontcrossit.Youcanbuyafour-wheeldrive,butyoucant

    A. A series of emails from the California State Parks Foundation about issues they are working on. There will be a State PaAdvocacy Day on Monday, March 8, 2010 in Sacramento. AndSaturday, April 18, 2010 will be the 40th Anniversary of Earth

    and they are promoting that people visit their local state park and show their commitment by volunteering to help with loverduemaintenanceandimprovementprojects.

    2010Annual

    PackingClinicThis February the Redwood Unit held its annualPacking Clinic in Ferndale, CA. The RedwoodUnit was joined this year by the Bureau of LandManagement who held a wild horse and burroadoption on Saturday.

    The event drew a very large crowd, there wassomething for everyone at the clinic.

    Withababyhorse,yourplanistogetnoticedatleasthalfofthetimeandeventuallythehorsewilldevelopthehabitofbringisattentionbacktoyou.Whichmeansthatitwillstartcomingbacktoyoufortheanswerofhowtorespondtothatlastthing

    hatgrabbeditsattention.

    Whenyourhorsetrustswhatyouaresayingwithyourbodylanguage,heedingbecomesasortofautopilotsystem.Youarecaourhorseheedsthefactthatyouarecalm,andthehorsetakesitscuefromyou.Whenyouchangepositions,itindicatesahangeinhowthingsshouldbeandthehorsewillchangepositionwithyou.

    Afteryourhorsehaslearnedtoheedyourbodylanguage,hewillnotonlyheedyou,butalsoanyonewhospeaksthesameanguage.Everythingyoudo,asfarasyourposition,shouldbehorselogical.Forexample,whenyouhaveyourshoulderline

    aralleltothehorse'ssidethenturnsoyourshoulderlinerunsthroughhisshouldersandstepforward,thehorsewillutomaticallystepwithyou.Youdon'thavetoforcethehorsetowalkandpullhimalong.Youalsowon'thavetojerkonhimecausehe'swalkingtoofast.He'lljuststartwalkingatthesamespeedyoudobecauseyouhavetaughthimtoheedyourbodhorselogicalmanner.

    There'sacorollarytohavingthehorsepayattentiontoyou.Youmustpayattentiontoyourhorseatalltimesandcreateacalworkingenvironment.Ifsomeonecomesalongthatyouwanttotalkto,finishwithyourhorse,putyourhorseawayandthenDon'ttakeyourattentionoffyourhorse.

    Whenyouarecleaningthestall,youstillhavetopayattentiontowhatyourhorseisdoing.Ifyourhorsebites,putadroposebandaroundhismouth.Youcanalsoattachaleadropetohimandleadhimaroundwithyouasyouclean.Oryoucanpiminakeeperstall.Youmustmakethehorsefeellikedoingsomethingyousuggestwithoutmakingafightaboutit.Thatisougainmentaldominance.

    Teachingheedingbuildsacommunicationlinkbetweenyourselfandthehorseinthehorse'slanguage.Thatiswhyitdoesnoequirestrengthtotakehorsestothehighestlevels.ThereisaMythUnderstandingthatmenarethebesttrainersbecausetherestrongerthanwomen.Inreality,traininghasnothingtodowithstrength.Itisaboutmentalgames.Horsetrainingisameameplayedinaphysicalmedium.

    Yourprimaryobjectiveasatrainerisrhythmandrelaxation.Whatthehorseneedstoachievethisissteady,physicalworkatamentallevelthatyoucreatewhichisalertenoughtopayattentiontoyoubutnotfrightenedandnottense.Youhavetobeop

    mindedandcalminordertostudyandunderstand.Anditisexactlythesamesituationwiththehorse.

    Anawfullotofpeoplethinkthatiftheydosomethingtothehorsethatmakesitactmoreexcited,thatthehorseisgoingtoleasterorrespondbetter.Thetruthisthatthehorsemaynotberespondingatall.Itmayjustbereacting.Reactingisoverdoin

    Anaidthatgetsareactioninsteadofaresponsehasbeenavoidedjustaseffectivelyasifthehorsedidn'trespondatall.

    Neverattackorpunishahorseforbeing"disobedient."Justputhimbacktowork.He'sjustlookingtohaveagoodtimeandtwhatwe'retryingtoteachhimtodo--tohaveagoodtimeplayingourgame.Thereisnosuchthingasadisobedienceifyou'reellingthehorsewhattodo.Theremaybealapseofobediencebutwhenthathappens,yousimplyinterruptwithinstruction

    whatthehorseoughttobedoing.Nofighting,noloudorexcitedreaction,justacalmrequestusingyourhorse-logical

    ommunicationlink.
