LOOKING FOR A SPLITTY: This afternoon in rainy San
Francisco, the Dodgers look to complete their first road trip of the
season (4-2) by earning a four-game split with the Giants after a
come-from-behind extra-inning victory yesterday. Following an off
day tomorrow, Los Angeles will open its home slate on Tuesday
against the Arizona Diamondbacks in a sold-out 1:10 p.m. game at
Dodger Stadium. The home opener kicks off a six-game homestand
against the Diamondbacks (3) and Giants (3).
The Dodgers scored one run in the ninth and one in the tenth
yesterday for their first extra-inning victory of the season and
their first extra-inning victory at AT&T Park since July 27,
2012. In the club’s 5-3 victory that day, just three current
Dodgers played in the game: Kenley Jansen picked up the
save, Andre Ethier and yesterday’s birthday boy, A.J. Ellis.
Last year, the Dodgers went 8-11 against the Giants,
including a 2-8 mark at AT&T Park. The club has lost 10 of
its last 13 games at AT&T Park.
The Dodgers are attempting to become the first team since
the National League West began in 1969 to win four
consecutive division titles. The only teams with three-in-a-
row are the Dodgers (2013-15) and Atlanta Braves (1991-93).
THIS GUY IS ON FIRE: Dodger right-fielder Yasiel Puig singled
and walked yesterday and is now 10-for-22 (.455) on the season with a
homer, two triples, six runs scored, four walks, a hit-by-pitch and four
RBI in six games against the Padres and Giants. Puig has reached base
safely in 15 of his 27 plate appearances, good for a .556 OBP.
MOVIN’ MICAH: Yesterday, the Dodgers recalled infielder Micah
Johnson from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed outfielder Carl
Crawford on the 15-day disabled list with lower-back tightness.
Johnson had played in two games for the OKC Dodgers in 2016 after
being acquired in a three-team trade with the Reds and White Sox last
December. The Indiana native flew out in a pinch at-bat yesterday.
SEARCHING FOR 100: Dodger left-hander Scott Kazmir will take
the mound for his second start of the season this afternoon, looking to
build upon his 6.0 scoreless, one-hit innings put up in his first outing
against San Diego. In that start, Kazmir tied his second-best career
mark by retiring 17 consecutive batters. In his career, Kazmir has made
just two starts against the Giants, going 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA (2
ER/12.2 IP) and 12 strikeouts. His last outing vs. San Francisco was
last Aug. 11 at AT&T Park, when he gave up two earned runs in 5.2
innings (L).
Kazmir was signed to a three-year contract over the winter,
and last season with Oakland and Houston, he combined to
post a 7-11 record with a 3.10 ERA in 31 starts, ranking
among the American League’s best in ERA (4th), opponents’
batting average (.237, 15th) and WHIP (1.21, 15
th). He started
the season with the Athletics, going 5-5 with a 2.38 ERA in
18 starts before being traded to the Astros on July 23.
In 273 games (272 starts), Kazmir has a 99-90 career record
with a 3.94 ERA in 12 big-league seasons, all in the
American League with the Rays (2004-09), Indians (2013),
Athletics (2014-15), Astros (2015) and Dodgers (2016). The
three-time All-Star (2006, ’08, ’14) has posted double-digit
victories in seven of his 11 MLB seasons.
Dodger starters have allowed just eight runs in 39.1 innings
pitched (1.83 ERA) while striking out 30 and walking eight.
Dodger starters have held the opposition to a .140 (19-for-
136) batting average.
TRACKING: Dodger regulars Yasmani Grandal and Howie
Kendrick continued their rehabs last night for Triple-A Oklahoma City
and Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, respectively, Grandal went 2-for-2
as the designated hitter and will catch tomorrow afternoon in Nashville.
Kendrick played 7.0 innings at second base and went 2-for-4 with two
singles and a stolen base.
FAMILIARITY BREEDS SUCCESS: Los Angeles has enjoyed more
intra-divisional success than any other club the past two seasons:
Best Record vs. Own Division - 2014-15 MLB
Los Angeles Dodgers 96-56 (.632)
St. Louis Cardinals 91-61 (.599)
Washington Nationals 89-63 (.586)
STAND UP AND TAKE NOTICE: Justin Turner went 1-for-4 with
a key hit by pitch yesterday and is hitting .318 (7-for-22) on the young
season with two doubles and two RBI. Since becoming a Dodger in
2014, Turner has been one of the best hitters in the NL:

(minimum 700 PA; current team listed)
Buster Posey, SF .316
Justin Turner, LAD .314
Dee Gordon, MIA .312

THE YOUNG BUCK: Dodger shortstop Corey Seager ripped a
double in the 10th inning and scored the eventual winning run, keeping
alive his nine-game hitting streak in the process. The streak began on
Oct. 1, 2015 and Seager is hitting .371 (13-for-35) with three doubles, a
homer and five RBI during the run, with the Dodgers going 7-2 in those
contests.
AND A PLEASANT STREET RENAMING TO YOU…: The
Dodgers announced Friday that Vin Scully Avenue will officially be
dedicated Monday at 11:15 a.m. at the Gate A entrance to Dodger
Stadium and the corner of Stadium Way and Vin Scully Avenue
(formerly Elysian Park Avenue), following a vote on the street name
change this morning by the L. A. City Council. Scully, Dodger
President and CEO Stan Kasten, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and First
District Councilman Gil Cedillo will be on hand for Monday’s
ceremonies.
CHEERS TO CHARLIE: The Dodgers would like to wish a very
happy birthday to infielder Charlie Culberson, who turns 27 today.
Culberson made his first start yesterday, playing not only shortstop, but
left field as well, where he made a spectacular diving catch in the
bottom of the eighth inning. At the dish, Culberson went 2-for-5 with
two doubles and collected the game-winning RBI in the tenth inning by
driving home Corey Seager. The Georgia native made the club out of
Spring Training as a non-roster invitee, hitting .302 with two homers
and a team-leading 14 RBI in 27 games.
On this date 54 years ago, Dodger Stadium opened up
with 52,564 Southern California baseball fans in
attendance to see the Reds beat the Dodgers, 6-3. The
Reds’ Wally Post hit the first Dodger Stadium home run
and the contest featured two Hall of Famers: Duke Snider
and Frank Robinson.
HEY, NEW GUY(S): Dave Roberts, 43, was named the 10th manager
in L.A. history (28th in franchise history) on Nov. 23, 2015 and
previously served as the Padres’ bench coach from 2014-15 and first
base coach from 2011-13.
Dodger pitching coach Rick Honeycutt returns for an 11th
season, but the rest of the new-look staff is comprised of
bench coach Bob Geren (2015: Mets’ bench coach), hitting
coach Turner Ward (2015: D-backs’ hitting coach), first
base coach George Lombard (2015: Red Sox’ minor league
outfield/baserunning coordinator), third base coach Chris
Woodward (2015: Mariners’ first base coach), bullpen coach
Josh Bard (2015: Dodgers’ pro scout), assistant hitting coach
Tim Hyers (2015: Red Sox’ minor league hitting coordinator)
and quality assurance coach Juan Castro (2015: Dodgers’
minor league infield coordinator).
