NOW IS THE TIME: The Dodgers continue their nine-game
homestand (3-2) tonight, playing the middle contest of a three-game
series with the St. Louis Cardinals. In last night’s victory, the
Dodgers scored eight runs, their most at home since plating eight on
Aug. 15, 2015 vs. the Reds, and have now won five of seven contests.
After the weekend series with the Cards (which features a nationally
televised ESPN game tomorrow night), the Dodgers play a home-
and-home against the Angels, with games at Dodger Stadium
Monday and Tuesday, before heading down the road for Wednesday
and Thursday night contests in Anaheim.
The Dodgers were 2-5 against the Cardinals last season and
St. Louis took three of four from Los Angeles at Dodger
Stadium. Last night marked the Dodgers’ first game of 2016
against the National League Central, a division they went
17-17 (9-8 at home) against when facing in 2015.
Los Angeles improved to 8-10 at home with last night’s
victory and is up to averaging 3.11 runs per game at Dodger
Stadium this year – the fourth-lowest home mark in the NL.
On the road, Los Angeles is averaging 5.44 runs per game,
which is the third-best in baseball.
L.A. has posted a .267 team average on the road (175-for-
655), including a .312 mark with runners in scoring position
(53-for-170), but has slumped to a .213 mark at home (122-
for-573), with a .164 average with RISP (20-for-122).
The first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive a unique
replica of Dodger Stadium, presented by Farmer John.
Dodger fans will be jamming tonight as seven-time
GRAMMY award winner, singer, songwriter and producer
Ziggy Marley will perform a special pregame concert on top
of the Dodger dugout at 5:35 p.m. Marley, who is about to
release his sixth solo studio album, will also throw the
ceremonial first pitch this evening.
PLAY BALL WEEKEND: This morning, as part of MLB and the
Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation’s inaugural “PLAY BALL
WEEKEND,’ Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner (who homered off
Puig) surprised local youngsters from the Venice Boys and Girls
Club by joining their game of wiffle ball on Venice Beach! After
taking a group photo with two of their favorite Dodgers, the kids
were given a wiffle ball and bat to take home. ‘PLAY BALL
WEEKEND,’ is a league-wide effort by MLB and all 30 Clubs to
engage young baseball fans and celebrate the continued support of
youth participation in baseball and softball.
Additionally, Major League players, coaches and managers
will wear specially made PLAY BALL T-shirts during
batting practice and PLAY BALL patches on their uniforms
during the weekend’s games.
Tomorrow, the Manhattan Beach Little League will be the
featured Little League team as part of ESPN Sunday Night
Baseball and will be hosted by Adrian Gonzalez, who will
give the kids a tutorial on how to play first base.
During pregame ceremonies tomorrow night, Dodgers RBI
players will officially begin the game with “It’s time for
Dodger baseball!” A Dodgers RBI player will also
participate in the managers’ lineup exchange.
As a part of Kids 4 Dodger Baseball, more than 1,000 local
students will receive an all-inclusive Dodger game
experience during PLAY BALL WEEKEND. Kids 4
Dodgers Baseball provides Los Angeles area underserved
youth with a Dodger game experience courtesy of the
Dodgers. Transportation, tickets, a voucher for a Dodger
Dog and beverage and a Kids 4 Dodgers Baseball T-shirt
are included.
WHERE WE BELONG: Despite flirting with the .500 mark for the
first month or so of the season, the Dodgers are still tied for first
place, a position familiar to both them and the Cardinals:
MLB, Most Days Spent in First Place of Division – Since 2013
Los Angeles Dodgers 374
St. Louis Cardinals 341

Dodger infielder Chase Utley is quietly putting together a
stellar first half of the season, leading the Dodgers in
average (.296), on-base percentage (.392), slugging
percentage (.454) and OPS (.846) while tying for the club
lead in three-hit games (3, Adrian Gonzalez) and runs
created (21, Corey Seager).
KAZAAM: Dodger starter Scott Kazmir is looking to even his
record at 3-3 tonight and faces the Cardinals for the first time since
May 22, 2010. In two career starts against St. Louis, Kazmir is 1-0
with a 4.09 ERA (5 ER/11.0 IP) and 10 strikeouts. The Houston, TX,
native is still searching for his first victory at Chavez Ravine while
in a Dodger uniform, having last won here as a member of the Angels
on June 12, 2010. Kazmir’s 3.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio (36 K/12
BB) ranks third on the Dodgers.
THE MEN IN THE ‘PEN: The Dodger bullpen fired another 4.0
scoreless innings last night and has not allowed an earned run (one
unearned run) in its last six games since May 7, striking out 24 in
19.0 innings in that span. During the run, the ‘pen has limited
opponents to a .167 batting average (11-for-66) and stranded all 12
inherited runners. Overall, the Los Angeles bullpen ranks fourth in
the NL with a 3.46 combined ERA (39 ER/101.1 IP), while limiting
opposing hitters to a .208 average (2nd, NL).
Louis Coleman retired the only two batters he faced last
night, marking his 10th consecutive scoreless appearance
(9.0 IP) since April 25. Coleman has stranded nine of 10
inherited runners this year and has allowed just 28 of 115
inherited runners to score in his career (24.3%).
Joe Blanton has tossed scoreless relief in 14 of 16
appearances this year.
Kenley Jansen coaxed the only batter he faced into a game-
ending double play last night and is tied for second in the
Majors with 12 saves in as many opportunities this season.
Jansen has allowed just one run in 15 appearances (15.0 IP)
this year, good for a 0.60 ERA. Dating to Aug. 26, 2015, he
has been successful in 24 consecutive save opportunities
and, with 154 career saves, Jansen is just seven saves shy of
Eric Gagné’s club record.
A LOOK BACK: On this date in 1968, right-hander Don Drysdale
started his streak of 58.2 consecutive scoreless innings with a 1-0
shutout victory over the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium. It was
also the start of a record six consecutive shutouts by “Big D.”
Three current Dodgers have active scoreless innings streaks
longer than 7.0 innings: Clayton Kershaw (11.0), Louis
Coleman (9.0 IP) and Adam Liberatore (8.1 IP).
