TheJucuNecropolisprojectisbasedoutofCluj-Napoca,RomaniaintheheartofTransylvania.Thevibrant,culture-richcityplayshosttothelab-basedportionoftheprojectand3*accommodation.Theexcavationissituatedjustoutsideofthecityinthebeautiful,ancientTransylvanianlandscape.

Thecemeteryislocatedbetweenthreearchaeologicalsettlementsassociatedwithdifferenttimeperiods:TheLateRomanperiod,theBarbarianinvasions,andearlyMedievalChristianmigrations.Sampleexcavationsrevealednearly100individuals,withanestimated1000burialsyettoberevealed.Inadditiontotheskeletalremains,cremationburialsfromthe8th–9thcenturiesADarealsopresentinthecemetery.Previousfieldseasonsidentifiedandmarkedthelocationsofanumberofburialsfor2016studentsandvolunteerseagertogettheirhandsdirty.

Ourfieldschoolisveryuniqueinthatittrainsallstudentsandvolunteersbothintheexcavationofhumanskeletalremainsandtheproperbioarchaeologicalpost-excavationanalysisontheskeletonstheyexcavatethemselves.

Transylvania Bioarchaeology aims to identify the topicswithin theTransylvanian region that offer opportunities for high qualityresearch and to assist the wider community to understand andappreciatetherichopportunitiesaffordedby,andthepotentialof,Transylvanian bioarchaeology as achieved through systematic andethicalinvestigationsofthearchaeologicalrecord. The organization's main objectives are to conduct research anddisseminate information through publication of scholarly papers,articles, and international conference presentations; preserve andinterpret thebioarchaeological record inmeaningful and insightfulways;andsharethebenefitsofTransylvanianbioarchaeologywithwideraudiences.Finally, thegroupendeavors to support the fieldworkeducationofstudents who wish to expand their knowledge and/or skills inbioarchaeology and human osteology, and offers studentsopportunitiestoundertaketheirownresearchinthefield.
