They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering
the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They
prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they
opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh. - Mt 2:10-11

Epiphany, like Christmas, is celebrated in
various ways by different nationalities and
cultures. The customs and traditions sur-
rounding these days give them a distinct
feel and meaning.
In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is ob-
served by marking the year on the mantle
of the entrance to a room or house. In the
center are the initials of the traditional
names of the three wise men: Caspar,
Melchior and Balthasar. The purpose is to
ask God’s blessing on the home, marking it
as though the wise men had come and found therein the Christ Child. It
reminds us of the marking of the doorways in Egypt with the blood of the
lamb so that the angel of death would pass over. God’s blessing comes to
each home as a source of protection and grace.
In some places, Epiphany is celebrated much like a mini-Christmas. Gifts
are exchanged in memory of the gifts of the wise men and special meals
are prepared. In any event, the manifestation of Christ as the light of the
world is a time to seek God’s blessing and rejoice in the gift of Jesus to us
and to all the world. (LPI)
LORD GOD OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, YOU REVEALED YOUR ONLY-BEGOTTEN SON TO EVERY
NATION BY THE GUIDANCE OF A STAR. BLESS THIS HOUSE AND ALL WHO INHABIT IT.
FILL US WITH THE LIGHT OF CHRIST, THAT OUR CONCERN FOR OTHERS MAY REFLECT
YOUR LOVE. WE ASK THIS THROUGH CHRIST OUR LORD.
AMEN.

Gospel Reading
Matthew 2:1-12
The Magi seek out Jesus and do him
homage.
Family Connection
The tradition of giving gifts at Christ-
mas is thought by some to be rooted
in the gift giving of the Magi. In
many cultures, gifts are not ex-
changed at Christmas, but rather on
the feast of the Epiphany. Whenever
you exchange your Christmas gifts,
take some time to reflect on this
tradition of gift giving at Christmas.
Think of the best gift you have re-
ceived. What was it? What made it
special? Was it the gift itself, the
thought that went into it, or the per-
son who gave it to you?
Read today’s Gospel, Matthew 2:1-
12. The gifts of the Magi—gold,
frankincense, and myrrh—have
come to be understood as symbols
of Christ’s royalty, divinity, and even-
tual suffering and death. They are
special because in giving them, the
Magi acknowledge who Jesus was to
be: our Savior. We pray that we will
acknowledge Jesus as Savior in all
that we do and say. Conclude by
singing together ―We Three Kings.‖

CELEBRATE LITTLE CHRISTMAS
WITH ST. JOSEPH PARISH AT OUR WEEKEND
MASSES JANUARY 5-6, 2019
Everyone knows that Christmas is celebrated on December 25th, but 12
days later, on January 6th, many Christians around the world enjoy a Little
Christmas celebration. Actually known by many names, including, the
Epiphany, Three Kings’ Day, the 12th Day of Christmas or Little Christ-
mas, January 6th was first celebrated as a feast day in the 4th century to
commemorate Jesus’ introduction in human form. Religious scholars ex-
plain that for many devout Christians, Christmas is a season rather than a
day; — with festivities beginning with Advent and concluding with the
Epiphany. And for these many Christians, whether you call it the Epiph-
any or Little Christmas, on January 6, gifts are exchanged in celebration of
when the wise men (or Magi) brought gifts of gold, frankincense and
myrrh to the baby Jesus. Tradition names these wise men Caspar, Melchior
and Balthasar.
St. Joseph Parish and the Respect Life Ministry is taking up a Second Col-
lection on Little Christmas Weekend. Will you be among those who
bring your gift of a special offering on Saturday, January 5 or Sun-
day, January 6, 2019 for PASS (Pregnancy Aid South Suburbs) to
support their work and their ministries? For those facing an unexpected
pregnancy, PASS offers hope and practical support. For those who have
experienced an abortion and are now struggling with their decision, PASS
is there to listen and to help. For parents entering a new chapter of life,
PASS offers resources and training. For those at risk of unhealthy behav-
iors PASS offers early intervention programs. All donations are 100% tax
deductible as allowable by law. PASS is a 501(c)3 organization and ac-
cepts no federal funding. PASS relies on the generous support of indi-
viduals, churches and businesses.
The Respect Life Ministry of St. Joseph Parish wish you and your family
an extra measure of comfort, joy and love this Christmas and throughout
the New Year. Thank you for all you do for life
Again this year the parishioners at St. Joseph donated so
many toys, we really needed to have help carrying them
to our car. Thanks to all of you for your many dona-
tions of toys and gift cards for the children and families
that are part of the Respond Now caring areas.

"WE THREE KINGS"
The song "We Three Kings" details
the gifts of the Magi, but do you know
what you're singing? "Born a king on
Bethlehem's plan, gold I bring to
crown Him again." This one is the
most straightforward - gold symbol-
izes the Kingship of Christ. "Myrrh is
mine: its bitter perfume breathes a
life of gathering gloom." Myrrh is an
embalming spice. Already at Christ's
birth, we have the symbolic reminder
of his death. "Frankincense to offer
have I. Incense owns a deity nigh." In
many religious traditions, incense
symbolizes prayers rising to heaven.
In some pagan traditions, it is
thought to help "call down" the deity.
The gift of frankincense symbolizes
Jesus' role as the Great High Priest,
sanctifying the world through his sac-
rifice. (LPI)

We may wonder whom can I love and
serve? Where is the face of God to whom I
can pray? The answer is simple. That na-

one is my brother and my sister. If we
have no peace, it is because we have for-
