1.0 PURPOSE

This specification describes the minimum requirements for drawings for mechanical, piping and services. The requirements for producing drawings for piping and mechanical services must be evaluated on an individual basis for each project.

2.0 GENERAL

Mechanical and Piping Services drawings must show:

all piping, pressure vessels, pumps, valves and related equipment.

all heating, ventilation, air conditioning and air supply ductwork, process vent ducts and related equipment.

all dust collection ductwork and related equipment.

all trays for electrical and instrumentation cables. Ideally, mechanical and piping are shown on the same drawings. The piping layout drawing must be read in conjunction with the Flow Diagrams, (PFD and P&ID) and the Piping Line list. The piping line list identifies the operating parameters of each pipe line, and defines the pipe specification that is used for each pipe line. The Flow Diagrams, Piping Layouts and the Pipeline List, must all be cross-referenced with each other, and work together as a complete package.

3.0 EXISTING PLANTS

Show all modifications and new piping, ductwork and cable trays on existing grids; grid plans have been established in some plants covering sections of the entire plant at 1/4" or 3/8" scale, on which piping and services are shown.

4.0 NEW PLANTS

Show all piping, ductwork and cable trays in plan-view and on the same set of drawings. Utilize the same grid system and match lines established on the plant layout drawings and divide the plant, area or building into an appropriate and sufficient number of areas and levels to adequately show all piping and services. Be sure to establish a sufficient number of vertical levels; experience has shown that 10'-0" from floor to floor, or from floor to platform level, is a desirable maximum. For example, if main floors are

spaced at a vertical distance of 20'-0", provide two area plans within this "cube" to ensure an adequate coverage of the services. The plan drawings may be sufficient and it may not be necessary to draw full sections through the entire building, however, produce any large scale details required for local dense areas on separate drawings; do not draw details on the grid plans.

5.0 PIPELINE NUMBERING

All piping colour codes, labeling and identification must be consistent with the requirements of SPEC-35001.

5.1 LINE NUMBER

All process and utility pipelines are to be numbered. Assign each line from terminating point to terminating point a different number (i.e. from "tank to pump", from "pump to discharge point", etc.). Each branch line is to be assigned its own number. The numbers shall first be applied on the flow diagrams and followed through on plans, sections and details. Label each pipeline as shown in the example below:

Refer to Appendix ‘C’ for a listing of Fluid Code abbreviations.

5.2 PIPELINE LIST

Prepare and maintain a “Pipeline List” for each building or a group of buildings within a plant area. The Pipeline list will define the correct piping specification and insulation, if applicable, to be used for each pipeline. The template used for the Pipeline list is in Microstation V8 format (Template T-08007LL) and available on the Vale Engineering web page. Each Pipeline List is assigned a drawing number and is cross referenced to flowsheets, piping layout drawings, and to previous and subsequent drawing sheet(s) as applicable.

Assign the pipeline numbers in a consecutive manner, continuing from previous sequence

where applicable, regardless of fluid code for each predetermined area or building throughout the life of the facility. Where applicable, continue with the existing pipeline list.

The pipeline list has a cross-reference listing of pipe Specification Code and the

corresponding Specification to be used for each pipeline.

5.3 SPECIFICATION OF PIPELINE INSULATION

Identify all insulated lines on the flow diagram, sections and details. The insulation type, thickness, temperature, etc is specified on the pipeline list.

Refer to Specifications SPEC-35042 and SPEC-35043 for description of piping insulations and insulation finishes.

5.4 PLUMBING SERVICES

Line numbers are not required for plumbing, i.e. water distribution, storm and sanitary sewer collecting systems for offices, change houses, warehouses, shops, head frames, laboratories and similar structures or service parts of plants. Give line numbers to mains and headers going to and/or coming from such service centres as those mains and headers become part of the plant system.

However, identify the plumbing system pipelines with an appropriate designation such as;

sanitary sewer, or potable water etc.

6.0 MECHANICAL/PIPING DRAWINGS

6.1 GENERAL

Ensure that all specifications and references are properly cross-referenced to the system, flow diagrams and the Pipeline list; the installation drawings must show the same corresponding line and valve numbers.

Manual valves that are not listed within piping specifications, require an associated manual valve data sheet (Template T-08007MV), or can be specified on the project drawings.

Do not show material lists on mechanical services drawings.

Show pipe support locations and label supports as described below. The Engineer/Designer must determine if painting of the piping is required using the SPEC-35001 as a guideline. If a pipeline is to be painted, it is specified on the pipeline list, or in the piping general notes, or the Scope of Work for the project.

6.2 DRAFTING

Show all piping, up to and including 12" dia., as single bold-solid-lines. All piping 14" dia. and over, is shown as double solid-lines complete with conventional centerlines.

Show pipe supports on all lines of 2-1/2" dia. and larger and, regardless of size, on all hot lines of 250°F (120°C) and above. Pipelines 2" dia. and below are normally field-run and supported accordingly; the only exception being pipelines carrying Category M fluids as defined by ASME B31.3. Typical pipe hanger, support, anchor and guide configurations are shown on drawings 99-999-G-004245 through 004248, 99-999-G-004511, and 99-999-004512. (SPEC-35002) Hangers are labeled on the piping drawings in plan as follows:

The following shows the typical methodology for showing pipe supports on drawings:

Piping installed in mining drifts is normally field run and located. Drift piping is generally supported by chains and no detailing of these supports is required. Typical pipe support configurations are shown on drawing 99-999-G-004249 and 99-999-G-004511 (SPEC-35002).

Special pipe anchors, thrust blocks, etc. shall be clearly located and fully detailed.

Show all ductwork for heating, ventilation and dust collection as double solid-lines complete with conventional centerlines.

Show cable trays on mechanical drawings for reference as required.

4.3 DIMENSIONING

Dimension all pipes, ducts and trays in continuous strings to the grid lines; indicate any changes in direction and dimension appropriately. Indicate the elevation of each service at the match lines and at every fall-point and rise-point.

Dimension piping to its centerline unless conditions dictate dimensioning to the "bottom-of-pipe" elevation, (B/P elevation).

Dimension round ductwork to its centerline; dimension rectangular ductwork to its "bottom-of-ductwork" elevation (B/D elevation), or to its "top-of-ductwork" elevation (T/D elevation).

Dimension cable tray to its "bottom-of-tray" elevation (B/T elevation).

For machine design drafting, geometric tolerancing is implemented when specific tolerance conditions are required. The permissible range upper and lower limit will be shown in the dimension. For inside dimensions (ie: holes) the low limit is placed above the high limit. For outside dimensions (ie: shafts) the high limit is placed above the low limit. See the following example:
