Respecting Our DifferencesBy Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister

morning fora visit andshe wanted
me to seethat she was
wearing hernice slacks, and not a pair of blue jeans! Those of you in worship on Sunday heard
my sermon about Paul and differences of opinion in church. I mentioned a difference
of opinion that took place in a church Iserved around wearing blue jeans to church.
I guess it hit home for many people.
First of all, let me say that I was notsaying you can’t wear blue jeans. As long
as you’re wearing clothes, you are welcomein church. (I’ve never had to deal with the
nudity in church issues, thankfully!) But I
did want to point out that what we wear
can be an issue for some of us, so let ustalk about it and understand one another, rather than judging one another. As Paul
says in Romans, welcome one another,
both the weak and strong. And the Greek word he uses is “proslambano”, or allowaccess to one’s heart. Isn’t that what we do
in church—allow access to one another’sheart—and the heart of God? So if we differin opinion on things like wearing blue jeans,
let’s share our feelings with each other andrespect where we come from.
I laughed as Terry Earnheart wasleaving church on Sunday and she came up
and said that it was the first time she had worn blue jeans to church—and I happenedto mention it in my sermon! I guess the
warning is this: be careful what you do inchurch, I just may mention it in a sermon!
But don’t worry about falling asleep. If youneed sleep that much, I’m happy I can helpyou out.

On February 6, 130 million people all o
the world will tune in to the Super Bowl
football game. There will be parties with
abundantfood. At the same time, there w
be people worrying about clothing their
families, looking for shelter and hoping
for a warm meal. The Cornerstone Classinvites you to demonstrate God’s love b
loving our neighbors with a simple, but
significant act of sharing and charing for
others through the Souper Bowl of Carin
Members of the class will be holding sou
pots at the church to collect money for
those who are hungry and hurting. In
2010, over 13,000 groups participated
in the Souper Bowl of Caring, generatin
over $10 million. We will donate our
entire Souper Bowl of Caring collection
Breakfast on Boulevard. Since the SoupBowl of Caring began in 1990, over $70
million has been given to help those in
need. Last year First Christian raised
$1,439 - and over the past 7 years we’v
raised $4,973.84. None of this money
ever goes to the Souper Bowl of Caring
headquarters. Please support us in this
effort to “love our neighbors” by droppi
your dollar in the soup pot as you leave
worship on February 6.
Once again our church family hasresponded generously to help support the
anticipated participation of some of ourstudents in the International Affairs Seminar
(IAS). As a reminder, IAS is a trip to
Washington, D.C. and New York City which
exposes the participants to a larger worldview with a focus on Christian responsibility
n the world. Students who attend visitCongressional representatives, other
government officials, foreign embassiesand the United Nations; they are briefed bythe State Department and political activist
groups; they worship at National CityChristian Church; and they enjoy sight-
seeing and usually a Broadway musical. The students who will participate in
this event in future years appreciate the
great support offered by our congregationat the Bean Dinner on January 30. The
total donations of $1104.75 once againdemonstrated the generosity of our faith
community in supporting this activity
and will help offset the expense of this
opportunity for our students and theirfamilies.
Thanks for the success of this event
are also directed to Bob Steele for helping with preparation, other members of the
Compadres Sunday School Class andparents from our Youth Ministry for
preparing, setting up, serving and cleaningup, and to all those who helped SherryeVanOsdol and Tana Stufflebean in
supplying cakes.
Please patronize the followinglocal merchants to thank them for theirdonations to support this activity: WalMartSupercenter (Memorial & Penn), SAM’s

& Santa Fe), Walmart NeighborhoodMarket (164th & Western), Homeland (33rd
