It was a pretty quiet month last month in the Az Pool and Dart World. I think pool players were all getting ready for Vegas, and dart players were maybe recovering from the Wild West Shootout. Fear not though. Things ramp back up again this month.
Pool players, check out the Kolby’s Ad on page 20. Chris Adams is now running tournaments at Kolby’s and his new Monday night chip tourmament looks very intriguing. He says he can run a field of over 64 players and still be done at a decent hour.
Dart players, don’t forget the Masters A & B drafts at Bullshooters this month. The A draft is August 24th and the B draft is August 27th. I will be at the Z draft looking for a team that will take me.
-Until next time Mike

The ListBased on “The List” from the TruTV reality series “The Hustlers”, the idea behind “The List” is a heirarchy of top players in the state, ranked by ability. Players on the list can challenge the player above them and take that spot if they win the challenge. Those who are not on the list, can challenge the #10 player for a chance to take that players spot.
While there are already lists for each different Arizona rating, we will try to keep you loyal readers as updated on the top list as we can. Players will change positions during each month, but as of press time, these were the players on the list.

Paul Feltman Sr. outlasted a full field of players at Bullshooters’ One Pocket Madness event on July 18th.
The final four on the winners side saw Feltman defeat Mike Howard, and Tres Kane beat Billy Garrett. Feltman then went on to send Kane to the one loss side 2-1.
On the left side of the board, Garrett eliminated Chad Barber and then How-ard, to earn a match against Kane in the semi-finals. That match would go the distance, with Kane scoring the 2-1 win.
The finals saw Paul defeat Tres 3-1 for first place.

On the weekend of July 11th and 12th, a very talented group of 79 pool players escaped the blistering heat of Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the Mezz West State Tour’s 5th event of their 17 stop season. Room owners of Bull Shooters, Mike and Julie Bates have one of the premier pool rooms in the nation boasting a huge array of tables, full kitchen, and full bar catering to both the recreational and serious pool fan. This is the second time the tour has visited Bull Shooters and the players thoroughly enjoy the venue. Several of the tour “regulars” were in attendance who came from California and Nevada to compete against the top players from the Arizona area including Bernie Pettipiece, Tim Daniel, Bobby Emmons, Tres Kane among others. Leading the top half of the tournament board was co founder of the MWST, Oscar Dominguez with wins over Mike Massey, James Main, Nick De Leon, Bobby Emmons, Tim Daniel, and Beau Runningen setting up for the hot seat match. The bottom half of the bracket was lead by one pocket specialist Bernie Pettipiece with wins over Marshall Anonby, Michael Langarica, John Ritonya, George Tehachea, and Mark Whitehead to face Dominguez for the hotseat. Meanwhile on the one loss side, early tounament favorites such as Sal Butera, Dave Hemmah, Rodney Morris, Vilmos Foldes, Brian Parks, and Ernesto Dominguez all faced early defeats making the one loss side littered with top players and amateurs. Once the dust settled, it was former Junior National Champion Beau Runningen clawing his way through the B bracket with wins over Bobby Emmons, 17 year old sharpshooter Chris Robinson, and Bernie Pettipiece to set up an all Southern California finals between Dominguez and Runningen for the title in the single extended race finals. After a few critical mistakes by Oscar, Beau capitalized with solid safety play and firepower to take tour stop #5 and first prize. The top female bonus was awarded to Melissa Herndon and we would like to thank all our sponsors and players for their continued support. The Mezz West State Tour would like to thank all their sponsors: Mezz Cues (Miki-Mezz.com), West State Billiard Supply (WestStateBilliards.com), Zan Tips (Zan-Tip.com), Taom Break/Jump Tips (TaomTips.com), Andy Cloth (AndyCloth.com), Ozzy Reynolds and CSI (PlayCSIPool.com), PiUs Company, So Cal Tap, Kurzweil Country Meats, fast&loose desgins (fastnloosedesigns.com), Contact Point Media, Turtle Rack, NYC Grind (NYCGrind.com) and AZ Billiards (AZBilliards.com). Slow Play
By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor
This month, we look at the problem of slow play in leagues and tournaments. Slow play is a problem in most sports and I am sure that you have seen it or been a victim of it in the pool world. In golf, you always have that one group that the course master has to drive his cart up to and ask them to speed it up.
Personally, when I play a slower player I find myself speeding up and trying to stay at the table and finish the rack to avoid them com-ing back to the table. This takes mental energy that I could use towards running the racks and finishing the set.
The main problems when slow play occurs in tournaments or league formats is later finish-ing times and players waiting very long times between matches.
Now that we have established that slow play happens and some of it’s negative effects. The first step in fixing any problem is to identify the problem. Remember in the case of slow players that the fix is NOT speeding them up and it is not your job to monitor or sanction slow play.
The keys of dealing with slow play• Do not let it affect the outcome of the match• Address it early with the tournament direc-
tor, league operator, etc. • Do not rush your time at the table • Do not make it personal with your opponent• Do not try to take longer on your shots to
punish your opponent
Finally, slow play will happen but by using these few tricks, maybe you can keep from be-ing affected by it.
Where Is Pool Headed?
By Roger LongCertified Instructor
Ever so often, someone will jump on AzBil-liards.com and ask the question: Is profes-sional pool dead? They know beforehand that their question will not only stir a lot of debate concerning the current state of professional pool, but it will also bring a lot of commentary concerning the status of pool in general. But that’s okay. Pool players love to debate mat-ters concerning pool, even though nothing may ever be made better by their debates.
I’m no different. I like to talk about pool; and in my business, I have opportunities to discuss things with players of virtually all skill levels, as well as with people who are involved in ev-ery facet of the industry. And there’s one thing I’ve learned: very few people ever agree on what is best for pool, or where the game might be headed.
During the past 100 years, pool has gone through several periods of decline and resur-gence.
At one time, pool was almost exclusively a man’s game. Privately owned tables were a rarity; found only in the spacious abodes of the very rich. And even then, those tables weren’t “pool” tables; they were carom tables used for 3-cushion billiards, a game that commanded considerably more respect than pool. That left nothing but the commercial “pool hall” as the only place where pool tables could be found — and since women and children were not allowed there — it was one of the few places where men could escape nagging wives and children and partake in one of their favorite pastimes: gambling.
And that’s where the first great controversy began.
One school of thought is that pool always has been — and should always be — about gam-bling. An argument in support of that line of thinking is that the game was given its very name because of the practice of men putting their money into a “pool” and then playing for
the pool of money, and therefore, the game of pool is all about gambling. While that may be true, it has done little to sway the thinking of those who believe that pool should represent loftier ideals.
Idealists believe that pool should be promoted and played for its more intrinsic qualities, such as the simple joy one derives when watch-ing brightly colored spheres being smoothly stroked into small pocket openings. Or from the game’s ability to attract people from all walks of life and bring them together under one roof where they usually discard the social barriers that exist outside the pool room. This line of thinking usually includes a disdain for the practice of playing for money, which in turn quite often puts the idealists in conflict with the gambling crowd.
Even after five full paragraphs in this article, it’s pretty obvious that I’ve only scratched the surface of this subject, so we’ll take it up again next month. See you then.

60 players turned out for the APA sessional Captain’s Tournament last month held at Main Street Billiards. The ‘once a session’ appreciation tournament is the largest tournament that the Local APA league holds 3 times per year. This seeded tournament has become very popular with the APA players and it showcases some of our best players, said Gina Nowlin, phoenix’s local league operator. Some of APA’s finest players came out for a great day of quality com-petition and fun. Several of APA’s lower ranked players also had a great outing, some of them placing in the top 8 spots, proving that the Equalizer Handicap System that APA uses allows everyone a chance to win.
The Captains tournament is held each session at Main Street Billiards and is a tournament that was created to show appreciation for captains in the APA. Gina says the captains are the players that are the most valuable person on a team. They are the ones that keep things organized and flowing smoothly on league nights. They have a lot of responsibility and we just want to show them some appreciation. This tournament has become very popular and has grown each session since it began 2 years ago. With a $15 entry fee from 60 players and $200 added from the Local APA, the cash payouts isn’t a bad reason to play either.
We would like to congratulate the following winners and thank everyone for making the tournament such a success.

We would also like to thank Thor and his staff at Main Street Billiards for host-ing this tournament each session. They always take good care of all the players.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News August 2015Master’s League Gearing Up for Season #70
In 1990, Mike Bates was tired of the same old format in darts. He played with the top players and they were his friends, who else would you play with, but pounding all of the teams in league was not very much fun and wasn’t really promoting darts or making the players better.
So with friend, Ron Schultz, Mike came up with an idea for a Master’s League. The league would consist of eight teams. The top eight players to join would be the captains and they would pick from a list of players that signed up to play.
The first season saw seventy eight people on the list, and only thirty two would get to play in the league.
The format was ten games of Double In / Double Out 501 and ten games of Cricket, with the last being a team game where all eight players played.
Several people voiced their opinions that, although it was a good concept, it would never work for very long.
On August 24th, the Master’s A Division will hold it’s 70th draft, spanning over twenty five years. Over thirty players have made Team USA, won several World Titles, and in 2012 the league because the first soft tip dart league to be inducted into the National Dart Hall of Fame.
Over 400 players, eight father and son combinations, and 690 weeks have made the Arizona Master’s League the #1 league in the country for twenty five years.
Since the list was very large, a Master’s B Division was started with the players not chosen in the A draft. It will play it’s 55th season this fall as well.
Not really sure where those doubters are now...

Dedora & O’Neil Win at Kittys
Alex Dedora & Skyler O’Neil were the big winners at Kitty’s on July 18th, as they made their way through a field of nineteen teams to win the 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event.
Alex & Skyler would get to rest after a 6-4 win over Carlos Armenta & Wizzard for the hot-seat.
Robin Clark & Tom Clark (no relation) would end Carlos & Wizzard’s day in third place after a 7-4 win in the semi-finals.
The finals looked like it would be a lopsided victory for Alex & Skyler in one set, as they led the match 5-1, but back to back misses on the 9-ball allowed Robin & Tom to make it competitive at 5-3 before Alex & Skyler won the final game for the 6-3 win.
Complete Payouts:1st Alex Dedora & Skyler O’Neil $6302nd Robin Clark & Tom Clark $3003rd Carlos Armenta & Wizzard $1104th Laurance Ybarra & Beth Orth $50

Victory #1 for the Poores over Randell & Dennis was for the hot-seat, where they scored an 8-5 win.
Randell & Dennis then eliminated Mel Kirsch & Kitty Carroll to earn another shot against Team Poore in the finals.
Randell & Dennis would reach the hill first, at 5-7, but Brian & Veronica joined them on the hill at 7-6, and then broke & ran the final rack for the hill-hill win.

Dial & Taylor Top Team at Kolbys
John Dial & Charlie Taylor teamed up for the win at Kolbys’ 16 & Under Scotch Doubles event on the 4th of July.
Dial & Taylor cruised through the winner’s side and took the hot-seat with a very one-sided 7-1 win over Selwyn Reams & Claudia Justus.
On the one loss side, Tom “Guyle” Fielder & Leroy Banks were on a mission to avenge an early loss to Dial & Taylor. They would come up one match short of their rematch though, after a hill-hill loss to Reams & Justus.
The first set of the finals (a 7-5 race) started out great for Dial & Taylor, as they took a quick 3-0 lead. Selwyn & Claudia won five of the next eight games though; to send the match to a second set. Once again, John & Charlie took a quick 3-0 lead, but they would go on to win the second set 7-1 for first place.

Foos PulseFoosball News
By Jim King
Greetings to all foosers, near and far, from one of the top foosball hubs in the country. Anyone who’s currently playing in the league or one of the three weekly tournaments knows that Phoenix has a lot to offer for the beginner or veteran fooser. The 2015 Summer Foosball season just wrapped week four and there’s plenty of great foosball taking place week over week.
LEAGUE
The 2015 Summer League launched June 30th with a record 23 teams staking their claims to play in Foos Bowl XIV on November 14, 2015. To date, there have been 82 matches played and after four weeks of com-petition there’s only one unbeaten team, Peaks & Valleys. The league is made up the following conferences/teams and they appear in their current place order.
Eastern WesternSlo Rollers Peaks & Valleys
Claim Jumpers Del, Matt, PhilFoos Skulls Money Shot
Schweddy Ball AntraxxBruce Transgenners Ship of Foos
Over 40 Crew HammertimeSteve, Chris, Rob Fireballs
Fubar Foos Your DaddyTeam with No Name Foos Brothers
J.B.M. BoneheadsCruizin’ for a Foosin’ Stingers
Will, Tif, TBD
After these initial weeks of the season the overall handicap average is 3.14 - a fair bit below the median player rating value of 4.0. I believe this can be attributed to the 27 new players participating this season. It will be interesting to see how this average is affected as these new play-ers hone their foosball skills over the course of the season. I plan on keeping an eye on them and will keep everyone posted.
Side note: I’m sure that some of you scholarly types noticed that the average starts out the same as Pi, that being 3.14159265359. Please feel free to research the meaning Pi and its relationship to foosball and send it to [email protected]. The person with the most creative explanation will get it printed in next month’s Foos Pulse.
Full statistics have been posted for each category of games played dur-ing the weekly matches. You can view them at http://www.arizonafoos-ball.com/Leagues under the Statistics menu item. These are updated weekly so that you can see how you’re faring against other players in the league. Following are the current leaders as of July 23rd for each cat-egory.

Leaders of each conference leaders in the above categories will play off for the league champion the same day that Foos Bowl XIV takes place at Stinger’s Sports Bar in Peoria. The champion wins $50 and a com-memorative pendant and the runner-up wins $25.
NEW VENUE UPDATE
Duke’s Sport Bar in Scottsdale is proving to be a great venue for our weekly Friday night tourney. On July 17, there were 19 Open Doubles teams and 17 Singles players playing for their share of the winnings. This tourney also drew two teams from Tucson, which always gets the Tucson/Phoenix rivalry juices flowing. Following are the results of that tournament.Singles: 1st: Zeke C.; 2nd: Brad C.; 3rd: Nick B.; 4th: Ricky C.Doubles: 1st: Nick B. & Mike S.; 2nd: Zeke & Dozer; 3rd: Bryan H. & Eric B.; 4th: Jim K. & Miles J.
MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS
The great camaraderie and competitiveness flowing throughout the valley’s foosball scene was evidenced after last week’s league matches at the Dubliner Irish Pub, where league players from other venues all stopped by for a little impromptu foosball tourney. Since there was only one table and 10 foosers present it was decided to play roto doubles with teams of five each, and games were played to 15, best out of three format. Everyone was totally engaged and the next hour and a half flew by. Following is a photo of the winning team of the ‘5 Man Roto Smack-down’.
