Lots of contributors for this issue. Being out of town for 8 days last month made things diffi cult and this issue would have been nearly impossible to put together without help from a lot of contributers. I want to thank Heather Toney, who has come on board to help ease the load of trying to cover all of the events that we cover. I also want to thank Kiki Thomson, who has come on board to help with sales. I want to welcome Sage & Sand to the pages of the paper this month. Nice to see another westside alternative for everyone to check out. We have added something new this month in the form of a classifi ed ad section. I hope this will be a good place to follow the changes taking place on the local tournament scene, as well as a place for people to get their products out in front of the readers.

Until next time... - Mike

Salgado Wins Knobbys Monthly

Junior Salgado bounced back from a loss to road partner Manuel Pinon - and defeated Ed Scott in the finals - to win Knobbys’ 9’s & Under 8-Ball event on October 4th.

It was smooth sailing for Ed Scott early on, as he cruised through his first three matches to take the hot-seat with an overall game record of 6-0.

Salgado had dropped an early match to Pinon, but came back with four match wins on the left side of the board to earn the match with Scott in the finals.

While Scott had been untouchable in his first three matches, things turned quickly as Salgado won both matches of the finals 2-0 and 2-0.

On October 5, the Desert Classic Tour rolled into Stingers Sports Bar for a bar table 10 ball event. 24 players arrived on Saturday morning to play in the final B/C event of the year. Many notable regulars were on hand including previous BC winners Rick Armbrust, Mike Hamman, and Jude Espinosa. The tour also welcomed some new players in Ken Cottrell, Joe Avila, Jimmy Brewer and Nick Cipiti.

As the tourney quickly moved through on Satur-day, it was decided that a one-dayevent was possible. Many of the players agreed with finishing it out late Saturday evening. As the sun set and evening approached, two players began to separate themselves from the rest of the field. Nick Cipiti was mowing down players in the top half of the bracket by scoring wins over Joe Avila, Reid McKinley, and Paul Feltman. After a bye in the first round, these victories would place Nick in the hot seat match on Satur-day night.

While Nick was clipping off players in the top of the bracket, a well known Flagstaff player, Junior Jiron, was finishing off the bottom half of the bracket. He too, would receive a bye in the first round and proceed to rattle off wins over Adam Kroll, Chris Miller and Rick Armbrust. His wins would pit him against Nick in the hot seat match.

Meanwhile, over on the B side of the bracket, previous winner Mike Hamman was making quick work of his opponents. After losing his first match of the tourney to Rick Armbrust, he would roll through Jerry Hart-nett, Jude Espinosa, Joe Masi and Sara Miller. This would setup a rematch with Rick Armbrust. Unfortunately for Mike, Rick played as solid as he has all year on the tour and walked away with

the victory. Mike would settle for a 5/6 finish.

As the B side progressed, Nick made quick work of Junior in the hot seat match. Nick would cruise to an easy 7-3 victory and await the winner of Rick and Junior. As eas-ily as he lost the hot seat match , Junior would rebound and score a dominant 7-2 victory over Rick, leaving him with a 3rd place finish.

During the finals, both players would make some uncharacteristic mistakes. At 4-4 in the straight race to 7, it was obvious we were in for a close finish. Nick would take the lead at 5-4, only to see Junior win the next two games and reach the hill at 6-5. Nick would quickly tie the match at 6-6. After a scratch on the break in the case game, Junior was faced with a tough out, despite having ball in hand. After 12 games, the players were tied at 6 games a piece. Junior would at-tempt a 1-10 bank combo only to come up a little short. Faced with a tough out of his own, Nick studied the table and attempted a 1-10 cross side combo bank of his own. Nick would nail the shot to take home the win!

Thank you to Dale and the staff at Stingers for host-ing another successful tourney. The DCT would like to thank the 2013 sponsors (On Q Cases, Black Heart Billiard Tips, AzBilliards.com, Billiard and Dart News,

Rixx Images, AzPoolscene.com, Jeff Pranke Leath-er Wraps), and room owners (Pockets, Bullshoot-ers, Kolbys, Skip and Jan’s, Stingers, River City) who continue to support the DCT. The next tour stop is November 2-3, at Bullshooters. This will be the final regular season event before the finale in December. Please visit DesertClassicTour.com for details.

On October 19th and 20th, Pockets of Tucson played host to 21 ladies of the AWBT. Susan Williams came away with her second champion-ship in a row by beating Bernie Store 9-7 in the one set final. The win left Susan10 points behind Bernie in the race for the Tour Championship with one event still to play. Susan eased her way into the tournament with a first round bye and then had wins over Jaye Succo (7-4) and Sara Miller (7-6) to make Sunday’s final 4 winners. Williams dispatched Amanda Pulley (7-0) but then lost to Store (7-4) for the Hot seat. Bernie’s path to the finals also started with a bye and then wins over Renay Justus (7-5), Jodi Hirning (7-4), Rebecca Wag-ner (7-5), and then Williams to win the hot seat. Bernie had to wait while Susan took on Rebecca Wagner. Rebecca was sent to the Loser’s side by Bernie but then won a close (7-6) match over Sara Miller and then bested her Las Vegas road partner Stacy Allsup (7-3). This set up a match between the two Tour Champions. In a very close set that went down to the last 9-ball Susan eked out a 7-6 win. In the one race to nine final Susan jumped out to a big early lead and it appeared that the final was going to be a walkover. With Susan needing only 2 games, Bernie dug in and crawled her way back into the match to get to 7-8. Not wanting it to get to hill hill, Susan won game 16 and the match 9-7 for her second tournament in a row. These ladies put on a great show for the many fans who came out from the Tucson pool scene. The other Sunday finalists were Stacy Allsup who came all the way from Las Vegas in 4th place. Sara Miller finished in 5th, stopped only by two heartbreaking 6-7 losses. Amanda Pul-

ley, one of the AWBT’s young guns, also took home 5th money. Always in the cash, Susan Wilbur was 7th, along with Jodi Hirning making her second consecutive final 8. The AWBT welcomed several new ladies from the local bar table leagues. While no Tucson woman made the final 8, these ladies exhibited plenty of skills and we look forward to having them com-pete and cash in our future events. A big thanks goes out to Tracie Hamman for her work in getting these girls out to play. Sunday’s Second Chance had an additional $50 added to it by Pockets owners Lenny and son Curtis Johnson (thanks). Lois Schnitt, who only played the Sunday event, beat Jaye Succo to win the 13 player redemption event. Lois’ fine play left us wondering about where she would have placed in the main event. Great Job Lois and thanks to all the ladies who came back to play on Sunday. Thanks to Lenny Johnson and son Curtis for hosting and adding a total of $350 to our event. Thanks to the always friendly and capable staff of Pockets who make this a favorite stop each year. Thanks to the Tucson pool fans who came out in large numbers to root our ladies on.Thanks to The Friends of the AWBT for adding $200.Thanks to my co-director Kristie Ortega and Scott for putting on another fine event. Our next event will be November 16th at Bullshooters.

Mitch Ellerman and Chad Verna won their re-spective divisions to earn the lion’s share of prize money at Stinger’s on October 25th - 27th.

One of the divisions being contested over this weekend was a $1000 added open event with a fi eld of twenty four players competing for over $2,300 in total prize money.

The hot-seat match was contested between Mitch Ellerman and Chuck “The Mailman” Evans. Nei-ther player had an easy run to the hot-seat match, with Ellerman scoring notable wins over Jimmy Brewer and Brian Reich on Saturday. Evans had no easier road with notable wins over Tres Kane, Mike Williams and Bret Huth on Saturday.

While Ellerman was the favorite to take the hot-seat, someone might have forgotten to deliver that notice to Evans who sent Ellerman packing to the left side of the board on Sunday morning. Evans trailed Ellerman 1-0 in that match, but he quickly took control and cruised to an easy 7-3 win.

On the left side of the board, Brian Reich had just eliminated Bret Huth and was itching for another shot against Ellerman. Reich gave it everything he had, but Ellerman’s loss to Evans had gotten his undivided attention and he wasn’t going to lose another match on this day. Eller-man scored a 7-4 win over Reich, sending Brian to the seats in third place.

The double elimination fi nal match saw Ellerman score back to back 7-3 and 7-4 wins over Evans for fi rst place and $1,050 in prize money.

The other event taking place over the long week-end was a $500 added 6’s & Under 8-Ball event

with 21 players in attendance.

Six players were brought back on Sunday with Chad Verna facing Jaye Succo for the hot-seat, and Lynor Johnson, Steve Mullis, Tracie Hamman and Carlos De Santiago all hoping to win the event from the one loss side.

Verna took the hot-seat with a very close 4-3 win over Succo, while Johnson was defeating Mullis and De San-tiago was beating Hamman on the one loss side.

De Santiago ended Johnson’s run in 4th place with a 4-2 win, but then lost to Jaye Succo 4-2 to set up a Verna/Succo rematch in the fi nals.

As close as the hot-seat match had been, everyone was expecting another close match in the fi nals, but that wasn’t meant to be on this day. Verna ran away with the fi rst set 4-0 and $420 in prize money.

Bull Shooters wanted to do something a little different, so on Oct. 12 they hosted a $500 added 8-Ball tournament on 9-ft Gold Crown tables that was open to a maximum of 32 invited players. Twenty-fi ve brave souls accepted the invitation on that day, and the chase was on to see which player would emerge as Bull Shooters’ fi rst VIP (Very Important Patron) Champion.

Not too surprisingly, Chuck Evans made it to the hot seat by posting wins over Beth Orth, Ralph Craig, Lew Oliphant, Karloz Chavez, and John Brooks.

Karloz Chavez bested Dwayne Beagle, John Zajac, and Rob Bonaguidi be-fore being sent to the one-loss side by Chuck Evans. He then knocked off Lew Oliphant and Bill Garrett before being awarded a forfeit through the generosity and benevolence of one John Brooks, which set up his rematch in the fi nals with Evans.

It should be pointed out here that John Brooks played like a champion through-out this tournament, but he gladly bowed out early and accepted third-place money in order to fi nally be able to sit down and ease the excruciating pain that had plagued his back all day long. Great tournament, John!

In the fi nal match, Chavez won the fi rst set with a hill-hill win over Evans to force a fi nal set for all the marbles. However, Chuck then bounced back with a 5-2 win over Karloz to take home fi rst-place money.

Many players have expressed their pleasure and gratitude to Bull Shooters’ management for this tournament, and they have asked if it might become a quarterly event. Hopefully, that will happen.

Humbling Practice

By Jerry BriesathBCA Master Instructor

There are hundreds of practice routines that have been written about, talked about and put on fi lm. Some are better than oth-ers, but they all have something to offer. What’s missing from most practice routines is proper repetition. Most games that are lost are not lost because the op-ponent made a terrifi c shot, but rather that you messed up on an easy shot. It may be because you missed an easy shot or you made the easy shot and failed to get the proper position or angle on the next ball.

It doesn’t matter what game you like to play. The exercise I’m going to give you applies to all games. This exercise shows what your true skill level really is. If you are an average player, begin by throwing 3 balls out on the table. You have cue ball in hand and you must run the balls off in rotation. Here’s the catch! There are no long shots allowed. There are

no diffi cult shots allowed, (we might explain a diffi cult shot by saying if it is as long and tough as a spot shot, then it is not allowed) and there are no banks allowed. You must shoot the balls off with a (ball in hand) gimme on the 1st shot and with a correct angle to get to the 2nd ball. The 2nd shot must be easy with a proper angle to get to the 3rd ball. The 3rd ball must be a gimme. If after shooting the 1st ball, there is a wrong angle or a tough shot on the 2nd ball, then you are not allowed to shoot it. You must put the 1st ball back in it’s original position and correct your error. If after making the 2nd ball, you do not have a gimme on the 3rd ball, then you must put the 2nd ball and the cue ball back in their previous position and correct the error. When correcting any errors, repeat the shot several times until you are confi -dent that you have learned the shot.

Scoring is as follows: throw 3 balls on the table. If you run the 3 balls off with a gimme, a good angle with an easy shot and another gimme, score 1 point. Any time you must repeat a shot, it is

a zero. Repeat this 19 more times. You must stay at the 3 ball level until you consistently score 15 out of 20 without an error. But remember that the repeats are where you gain all of the knowl-edge, even though they are zeros.

When you average 15 out of 20, you may advance to 4 balls. Now you must have a gimme on the 1st ball, an easy shot with a good angle on the 2nd ball, and easy shot with a good angle on the 3rd ball and a gimme on the 4th ball. Each time you add a ball, your average will drop considerably. Work up 1 ball at a time. Remember you advance only when you do several 15 out of 20s. Be tough on yourself and you will see why I call this “humbling practice”.

To give you a hint at the diffi culty lev-el, a person who scores 15 out of 20 at the 5 ball level is a top amateur player, capable of running several racks of 8-ball or 9-ball. This is an intense prac-tice routine that will quickly advance your skill level. Enjoy!

APA SW ChallengeAPA players met in Las Vegas on October 24th through the 27th where 9 teams from Phoenix joined 96 other teams from Cali-fornia, Arizona and Nevada for the 2013 9 Ball Southwest Challenge Tournament held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. Three player teams from all over the Southwest competed for over $25,000 in Cash at this popular annual event. 2 teams from Phoenix made it to the money rounds which paid down to 17th place. Our highest placing team made it all the way to 9th and won $430. Brian Chapin, Mike Leferve, and Kevin Hutson, who play out of Q & Brew on Monday and Tuesday nights, played very strong to secure the 9rd place spot. Carla Miller, Marty Packham and Joe Shipley, who play out of Main Street Bil-liards took 17th Place and $210 in cash.

Everyone had a great time playing in both the main event and the all night mini tournaments. There were vendors there to take care of the player’s equipment and accessories, as well as souvenirs from the event.

In March APA will host the 8 Ball version of this same event at the same loca-tion in Vegas. It will be the same 3 person team format except the game will be 8 Ball instead of 9 Ball. Teams can start signing up in February so anyone interested in playing contact Doug or Gina Nowlin from APA Phoenix Metro.

Mike, How is it different doing darts while owning a bar, as op-posed to being a player and not owning a bar? I think I get what you mean so here goes.

Since I have owned the bar, darts in the valley have grown, with many more people playing the game.

The thing is when I started playing we joined a league, found tournaments and playedall the time.

I see more and more groups getting together and just play-ing, and they do it many times a week, but won’t join a league and refuse to play in tourna-ments.

What most surprised me is the lack of loyalty from people that I thought would be loyal til the end. I played at several bars

before I had Bull Shooters and was loyal to all of them.

Cheers on Northern, Cheers on Bell, Stingers, Back Tracks, and many oth-ers.

I would go to Adel’s Cheers every Sat. Cheers Bell every third Friday.Stingers, Top of Phoenix, Back Tracks, when I could get out on Fridays. Later if Big Daddys, Stardust, Jimbo’s, My Ole Man’s, Champions, The Bar and more had big tournaments I would go and bring lots of others.

Even after I got Bull Shooters, I backed other tournaments and still do. We stay consistent in what tourna-ments we run, the payouts and when we run them. Others jump all over the place, which is fine.

I go and support where I can, and the least I do is send fund raising stuff or stop by and donate at most of the Charity events.

Many of the bars have what I guess

you call “Regulars” that always go there and go other places depending on the tournaments.

I have some great customers that come to Bull Shooters every time, they feel comfortable there and don’t want to play other places. There are oth-ers who jump at the new best thing, they chase the money. Then there are others who you never thought would throw away 20, 30 or even forty years of friendship for no apparent reasons.

It was a great thing I thought to get a bar where all the dart players could hang out, a place to meet all the time, play tourneys and leagues, and just have a great time together. Sometimes things don’t always work out.

To all those I say, ask yourself where would Mike Bates be if I owneda bar, would he back it, play leagues there, tournaments, help in any way possible. You know the answer.

In closing when you are a dart player and own a bar, everything is your fault.

A players pisses off another player, usually both don’t come in. A staff member gets a customer mad, they don’t come back. Some goofball puts darts in down the road from some one who has been there for youfor years, enough said.

It was way easier the other way, but it is great to see lots of people having fun. You can only take care of those who are there and don’t worry about who is not there.

…My opinions and I could be wrong, but I doubt it…

Robert and Peggy Mallen, owners of G Cue Billiard Store – a billiard boutique specializing in billiard and dart products announces the launch of their new-and-improved web site, www.gcuebilliardstore.com.

“Our goal for our new website is to not be the usual e-commerce (point-click-buy) site. We value our customers and want to talk to them! Why? Because we want to make sure they get the best customer service directly from us by call-ing and ordering or stopping by the store in Tempe, AZ. We feature many hand-picked, one-of-a-kind cues and other unique products that cannot be purchased at any other billiard store - online or brick & mortar.”

G Cue Billiard Store has been incorporated since 2006 and located in Tempe, Arizona since 2008. With over 300 cues on display from over 25 different manufacturers, it has the greatest selection of cues in the state. All employees are long- standing pool players and understand the game of pool so customers can get excellent advice and customer service.

G Cue Billiard Store Introduces New Web SiteBret Huth and Ben Sutherland split first and second place at Stinger’s $300 added 9’s & Un-der 9-Ball event on October 11th.

Both players had fights on their hands all night long, with Huth having to get by Lenny Marshall, Pete Gresh, Ray Robles & Adam Kroll. Meanwhile, Sutherland was fighting his way past Ken Gouso, Stacy Allsup and Kurt Siebels before the match against Huth for the hot-seat.

The hot-seat in this one went to Huth, sending Sutherland to the one loss side.

On the one loss side, Mike Sandoval was waiting. After a first round loss to Brett Calloway, Sandoval had scored seven straight match wins. That winning streak was not enough to get Sandoval past Sutherland though, as Sutherland sent Sandoval home in third place.

Instead of playing out the final match during the wee hours of the morning, Huth and Sutherland agreed on a split of first and second place.

Complete Payouts:1st Bret Huth $5102nd Ben Sutherland $2803rd Mike Sandoval $1704th Adam Kroll $805th Kurt Siebels $505th Steve Blackburn $507th JR Burkhart $357th Stacy Allsup $35

Amado & Tony Win at 480

Amado Martinez & Tony Norton went through a field of sixteen teams to win Max & Ted’s 480’s Scotch Doubles 9-Ball event on October 12th.

Amado & Tony got the better of Seth & Robb 7-5 for the hot-seat, and Seth & Robb took the trip to the left side of the board looking for opponents.

Those opponents would be BBQ & Mike, who had lost their first match of the day to Tina & Tim Biggs. BBQ & Mike had ran through the left side of the board and Seth & Robb would also fall to them 7-4 to set up the final match.

Amado & Tony showed that they were unimpressed by BBQ & Mike’s winning streak and quickly put the first match of the finals away 7-2 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Amado Martinez & Tony Norton $5692nd BBQ & Mike $2463rd Seth & Robb $163

BBQ, Tony Norton, Amado Martinez and MikeBrett Huth went undefeated through a full field of players to win Bullshooters’ One Pocket Madness event on October 19th, but it came down the wire before he earned that win.

Huth took the hot-seat with wins over Chad Barber, Terry Osborne, Brian Reich and Mitch Ellerman to his credit.

On the one loss side, Ellerman defeated Paul Feltman Jr. to earn another shot at Huth in the finals. Mitch had won the last two events at Bullshooters from the one loss side, and had his sites set on number three, if he could get past Huth in the finals.

The match came down to hill-hill with one ball on the table, but this time it was Huth pocketing the final ball to keep Ellerman out of the winners circle.

Tricks, Or Treats?

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

All’s fair in love and war. True or not, that’s how the saying goes.

If you play pool, I would have to assume that you’re competi-tive. By that, I’m not talking about your proficiency level, I’m talking about your desire to compete…and win.

We all like to win. That’s a given. But to what lengths are you willing to go in order to win? Would you cheat in order to win? No? Are you sure? Would you be tempted to cheat if you felt there would be no way to get caught? Or, perhaps you feel like some questionable activities aren’t really cheat-ing as long as no specific rules apply?

Cheating takes place in all sports. It always has. That’s why rules have to be estab-lished. Rules are meant to make things fair for all contes-

tants. But do they ever really ac-complish that? You would think that there would be no need to introduce new rules to any sport that has been in existence for years; and yet, the need always exists. I believe it’s that way because some people will always look for ways to get around the rules that are already in place.

I think the biggest problem is that today’s society is more tolerant of mischievous winners than it is of hon-est losers. We seem to have adopted a win-at-all-costs attitude. If there is a rule blocking your road to success, just find a way to circumvent that rule. You can look for a loophole, or you can make up your own interpretation of the rule. Either way is acceptable as long as it works for you. Or, if those tactics fail, you can just break the rule and plead ignorance later. After all, you can ease your conscience (if you had one to begin with) by recalling that old adage, “Rules Were Made To Be Broken.”

I’m pretty certain I’m correct in my

above accusation. I see crooked things happen nearly every day in the pool-room: I see seated contestants who won’t tell the player at the table when they are about to shoot the wrong ball. I see players who won’t call fouls on themselves whenever their opponents don’t notice that there was a foul com-mitted. I also see players who sandbag at certain times in order to give them-selves a better chance at success in tournaments. And these are just a few of the things that take place.

All of the above examples are what I consider cheating, but what many oth-ers might only call “loophole manage-ment.” These violations happen be-cause no rules can be written that will directly prohibit them from happening. That’s because no one can see into the hearts and minds of their fellow man. In other words, since no one can prove the intent that precedes controversial practices such as these, there is no way to specifically outlaw them. Therefore, many players will proudly take advan-tage of them.

And then we have some prac-tices that are blatant rules violations, such as absconding with league and tournament funds, making illegal player substitutions, falsifying of-ficial records, and so on, and so forth. These are violations where there is no doubt as to the intentions behind them, but, unfortunately, are also those where the perpetrator must be caught red-handed before anyone is willing to admit that he or she is actually a cheat. Even then, the offenders will usually deny the slightest shred of guilt, right up to their last breath. And even then, again, many other people are very quick to say, “let’s forgive and forget” rather than holding the perpetrators fully account-able. Why is that? Could it be because those people see a lot of themselves in that type of individual?
