Balancad Double Dips Parrill at Knobbys

Burt Balancad came back from a loss in the hot-seat match, and avenged his only loss to Chuck Parrill to win Knobbys’ 9 & Under 8-Ball tournament on June 3rd.

Balancad’s path to the hot seat match saw wins over Bruce Hirose and Tyson Cole, while Parrill’s path was through Sophia Morquecho and Jack Scerca. Par-rill took the hot-seat with a 2-1 win over Balancad.

After the loss to Parrill, Balancad found Morquecho waiting on the one loss side. After her loss to Parrill in her first match, Sophia had won four straight matches. That streak would come to an end at the hands of Balancad.

The finals went two sets with Balancad winning 2-1 in the first set, and 2-0 in the second.

Complete Payouts:1st Burt Balancad $2002nd Chuck Parrill $1003rd Sophia Morquecho $40

The Mezz West State Tour held their fifth stop of the 2016 season at Bullshooters in Phoenix, and a veritable “who’s who” of Arizona pool play-ers came out to represent their state against the best that California has to offer. In the end, it was Arizona’s own, Tim Daniel who scored impres-sive wins over two days of play and kept the first place prize money from leaving the state.

Daniel and Fach Garcia were the two players who advanced through the winner’s side in this event. Daniel’s path to the hot-seat match includ-ed notable wins over Bret Huth, Oscar Domin-guez and Paul Grande. Although the win over Dominguez only got Daniel into the final four on the winner’s side, it might have been the turning point for Daniel’s tournament. “I had lost close matches to Oscar the last two times we played, but I woke up Sunday morning feeling good and I was feeling positive about beating him.” said Daniel after the match. “After I beat him, I told myself that I came to win this event, and I did!”

Meanwhile, California’s Fach Garcia was match-ing Daniel’s path through the winner’s side with notable wins over Tonee Allin, Brian Reich and junior sensation Chris Robinson.

The expected fireworks in the hot-seat match didn’t happen though, as Daniel made quick work of Garcia 9-4.

On the one loss side, Mitch Ellerman was fully recovered from an early round loss to Paul Grande, and mowing down opponents. Eller-man’s seven match winning streak on the left side of the board included wins over Spike Aiardo, Gus Briseno, Grande, Dominguez and Garcia.

The extended final match was a close one the whole way. Ellerman looked to be gaining control and led the match at 8-6, but he wouldn’t win another game from there as Dan-iel won five straight racks for the 11-8 win.

The Diamond Pool Tour returned to Tucson for their third stop of the season where 46 players played 10-ball on the 9’ tables at Pockets Pool & Pub on June 18th - 19th. This stop crowned its third different winner in as many stops, as “The Rocket” Rodney Morris ended his extended Arizona visit with a dominat-ing tournament win.

The “A” player bracket only drew 13 players with Rodney Morris and George Teyechea the last two left standing on the right side of the board. Teyechea obviously picked up some pointers while hosting Rodney Morris all week, as he displayed his “A” game all day Saturday. Teyechea had wins over Bret Huth, Mike Hamman and Mitch Ellerman on Saturday, while Morris beat Eric Young, Gus Briseno and Brian Reich.

Sunday play in the “A” bracket saw Morris send Teyechea to the one loss side, and Ellerman get his revenge by defeating Briseno, Young and Teyechea.

The “B” bracket had 33 players and was dominated by Joe Guerra and Tonee Allin. Both players remained undefeated all day Saturday, never allowing an opponent to the hill against them. While Guerra and Allin were undefeated, special note has to be made about the play of two six rated players in the event. Chuck Bower won three matches on the winner’s side and was one win away from making it to Sunday undefeated. With Sunday being Father’s Day, Bower opted to bow out of his Sunday match to spend time with his family instead. Another six rated player, Jeff Lenschow, claimed he only played in the event for something to do while his son Sam played. The elder Lenschow would win two matches on the right side before being eliminated two spots out of the money. Both players showed a lot of heart and class all day on Saturday.

The “B” bracket saw Allin defeat Guerra on the winner’s side 7-3, while Jack Murray took advantage of the forfeit from Bower and then defeated Rick Schmitz 7-4. Guerra would bounce back from his loss to Allin and defeat Mur-ray hill-hill to make the final four players.

When the brackets came together, it was Morris defeating Allin 7-1 and Eller-man handing Guerra a loss by the same 7-1 score. Allin fared better against Ellerman than he did against Morris, but still lost the match 7-3. The finals only went one set with Morris scoring a 7-2 win to cap off a week that included a win over Scott Frost in Bullshooter’s first Battle of the Bullpen and then an undefeated victory on the Diamond Tour.

After three events, Mitch Ellerman holds a slim lead over Gus Briseno on the “A” player points list, while Tonee Allin holds a dominating lead over Karloz Chavez on the “B” player points list. With Allin’s impending raise at the July 3rd ratings committee meeting, Chavez will ascend to the top spot of the list with Guerra close on his heels.

Tour organizers thanked Curtis and his amazing staff at Pockets for dealing with pool players all weekend, as well as Rick Schmitz for the great photos and “Fast” Lenny Marshall for another tireless weekend of streaming pool.

The Diamond Pool Tour will be back in action on July 16th - 17th for their first stop at Main Street Billiards in Mesa, Arizona. Sixteen beautiful 7’ Diamond pool tables at Main Street should bring out a great field of players for this BCA 8-Ball warm up event.

Bar table 8-ball turned out to be a great equalizer at the AWBT’s third stop of the season at Stinger’s in Phoenix, Arizona on June 25th and 26th, as the usual suspects were sent to the one loss side early and a brand new tour winner was crowned.

Upsets on day one were coming fast and furious as all 7 of the top 10 players who were in the event were sent to one loss side early. #1 ranked Bernie Store dropped a hill-hill match to Cathy Kelley late on Saturday. #2 ranked Sara Mill-er lost to Jamie Goodwin on Saturday. #4 ranked Jaye Succo only managed two wins, losing matches to Miller and Tracie Hamman. #5 ranked Susan Williams dropped a match to New Mexico’s Pearla Ortiz but did qualify for Sunday play.

Play began on Sunday with eight players left with chances to win. The winner’s side saw Cathy Kelley defeat Terri Johnson-McCauley hill-hill, and Pearla Ortiz defeat Jamie Goodwin 5-0.

On the one loss side, Bernie Store and Sara Miller sent Tracie Hamman and Susan Williams to the stands in 7th place. Store would keep her winning ways going with a 4-2 win over Jamie Goodwin in the next round, but Miller would find herself on the wrong side a hill-hill match with Johnson-McCauley.

Back on the right side of the board, Ortiz was flexing her 8-ball muscle with a 5-2 win over Kelley.

Store would earn her rematch against Kelley, with a 4-1 win over Johnson-McCauley, but a hill-hill loss to Kelley in their rematch was the end of the line for Store in 3rd place.

That left Pearla Ortiz and Cathy Kelley as the only players left, and one of them would earn their first ever AWBT tour win. Ortiz would take her game up a notch from what had been seen earlier in the event and took a 6-0 lead in the race to 7. Kelley was able to slow the bleeding as she won rack 7, but Ortiz finished off the event with a win in rack 8 for the 7-1 final score.

This event shakes up the AWBT points list. Although the top three spots contain familiar names with Store, Miller and Succo filling out those spots, Ortiz climbs into 4th place with Amanda Pulley and Kelley right behind her in 5th and 6th.

The second chance tournament on Sunday saw twelve players competing, with Jaye Succo going undefeated with a victory over Carmen Osenton for the hot-seat and Veronica Poore in the finals.

Tour staff expressed their thanks to Dale and his staff at Stinger’s for hosting this event. Thanks were also given to the “friends of the AWBT” who added $100 to the main event and $50 to the second chance tournament, as well as Las Glorias Grille for adding $100 to the main event.

The AWBT’s next stop will be 9-ball on the 9 foot tables at Main Street Bil-liards in Mesa on August 27th - 28th.

Thank Goodness For Ratings!

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

What would we do with our time if we didn’t have ratings to argue about? I mean, seriously.

The subject of pool ratings has been a con-troversial topic ever since the Arizona Rat-ing System was developed back in the early ‘90’s. Now comes along Fargo Rate—a system which should be accurate enough to end all arguments. But does it? Not for a minute!

This month, CSI (BCA Pool Leagues) will once again produce its annual National Cham-pionships in Las Vegas, but will for the first time be using Fargo ratings to determine the division(s) in which each and every player may compete.

As soon as CSI announced the rating param-eters for determining the different divisions, some players began grumbling.

The main concern seems to center around a person’s chances of winning in any certain division if that person is at the low end of the scale for that division. Say for instance, if a person is in a division that allows ratings from 550 to 650, is there any chance that the player rated 550 is going to beat the 650 player if those two play a straight-up race against each other?

And that, as usual, is where controversy will begin. Some people are going to say that the lower rated player has no chance of winning, therefore, the only “fair” thing to do is to handicap all matches according to ratings dif-ferentials. Others will say that “fair” is to not use any handicaps at all and let the best player win — which, in the purist’s mind, is what a tournament is supposed to be about.

But in the real world, purists are a minority. What most people seem to want is for the un-derdog to have a better than average chance to win. A heads-up match between two unevenly-paired opponents doesn’t fit their idea of a fair contest. The outcome almost always goes in favor of the better player. What’s needed to give the underdog a good chance is a rating system like Fargo Rate, where players’ perfor-mances are tracked over the course of many, many games. It’s probably the most fair and accurate system in existence for handicapping pool matches.

However, as previously mentioned, Fargo Rate may have arrived, but it has not stopped controversy. Nor will it. The controversy will probably always be there no matter what sys-tem is used.

The problem is that no one can ever agree on

something that is fair for everybody. But that’s because they can’t agree on the definition of fair. Some consider “fair” any system that will provide them with a decent chance at winning even though they have put little effort into their game. Others consider “fair” to be a sys-tem that rewards the best players for the vast amount of effort they have put into their game. Still another group thinks a “fair” system is one that can be manipulated to gain any num-ber of various results—all to their own favor, of course.

Therefore the fact remains: No system will ever fully satisfy all groups.

And so the controversies will continue to rage on and on. But that’s exactly what many people seem to want. They love to complain. They love to argue. And they love going public with their complaints to see if they can solicit enough support to force their targets to give into their own personal demands. But if they can’t succeed in doing that, they at least want to feel some satisfaction from the attention they’ve drawn to themselves—and the grief they’ve caused someone else.

Maybe we can just be thankful that pool rat-ings are here to satisfy the weird needs of so many people.

Using Facebook to Search for Your Lost Cue Sticks

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

Using Facebook as a tool to search for your lost or stolen cues has enhanced the use of a flyer posted at the local pool room.

Now, with the use of Facebook, posts can be seen all over the world and all over the 50 states. The flyers usually have a good color picture and description of where or how it was taken. Most offers a reward of some type and even the statement of “no questions asked” if the cue is just returned.

Facebook has the power to post multiple pic-tures and detailed descriptions. Also, details of the situation where the cues went missing can be added.

What to do once you realize the cue is gone?• Contact the management staff / friends and

family • Maybe someone turned it in or they know

something• Do not panic. Retrace your steps and make

sure it is really gone and not just put be-hind a door etc.

Always file a police report. It helps in many ways:

• The cue will now show up on a stolen property list and if a pawnshop has it, they are in trouble.

• Sometimes, an insurance policy (home, car, whatever) will cover things not inside the home or car.

• If you find it on your own at a pawnshop or on the internet and want, it back with a police officer on scene, they can pull the report even months later

Let’s hope you never need have to deal with missing cues, but being proactive and docu-menting these suggested ways to ID your cue once it is found can be invaluable:

Ask the custom cue maker if they use any of these techniques on the cue you purchased

• Sign under the wrap • Take clear pictures and issue a letter of

authenticity at purchase• Customization • The cue maker’s mark or signature should

maybe be in more than one place on the cue. Such as the pin and the butt cap. A butt cap can be easily changed but a marked pin might be a little tougher.

• The signature is permanent and only visible under Ultra Violet light. This might make it easier to recover once it is stolen. It could have the cue maker’s signature along with the owner’s name.

Since the addition of teams in Canada, Japan and now China along with other countries who are considering joining APA around the world, The APA has decided it would be appropriate to change the name of our Team National Cham-pionships to ‘World Pool Championships’ and the Single National Championship will be called ‘Poolplayer Championships’. The fact that this championship series is the ‘Largest Pool Tourna-ment’ in the world according to Guinness Book of World Records, it makes sense to rename the tournaments. Teams and players that qualify to play in these National events are compensated for attending with rooms and entry fees paid for their events, and in most cases are given expense money to go along with it.

Each team in the APA pool league is comprised of both higher skill level players along with lower skill level people. Each team must stay within a maximum team handicap number with their combined players. This prevents any one team from building what would be considered a ‘Super Team’. Each team must compete with the same level of competitive players. The advantage of this system is that any level of skilled player can compete and win. APA makes it possible for players who are just learning to play the game to be able to go to Las Vegas and compete on the national level. In fact, any team that goes to Vegas MUST have one or two lower skill level player on their team so that the higher skilled players can play.

Our local Phoenix APA league just completed a yearlong series of what we call the LTC’s or ‘Road to Vegas’ tournaments that decide which teams would be going to the Westgate Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas to represent our city. Over the last year that runs from summer to summer we play a series of tournaments that determine who will go in formats such as Scotch Doubles, Singles, 8 Ball teams, 9 Ball teams, Masters etc.

Locally, APA Phoenix Metro pays out over $90,000 per year to its players here in the valley and the National tournaments pay out over $1.6 Million per year. With 260,000 players world-wide in the APA, it is by far the biggest pool league on the planet.

The following is a complete list and Bio of the teams and players going to Las Vegas for the World Pool Championships in August!

9 Ball:

No Field Five plays out of the Q & Brew in Tempe. The team consists of the Captain Nick Bellows and Steve Quiros as the Co-Captain. Jennifer and Jesse Krickeberg along with Megan Seeds and Deryc Painter are the heart of the or-der with Mario Hines playing ‘Clean-Up’. Nick and Steve won a trip to Vegas a couple years ago with a different team and are now taking a completely re-vamped team of young guns to the big show.

Hooligans, playing out of Bullshooters in North Phoenix, are led by their Captain Chris Lewis and Co-Captain Ray Neuman. Then Magen and Dustin Cox and Wallace Yopp round out the middle and Boyd McIntosh, as always, keeps them in the game. Through a traumatic year of highs and lows for this team they have now entered into the elite group of teams. Wonder where they came up with that name?

8 Ball:

Tuff Breaks, the upset of the weekend, came to Main Street Billiards with a mission: To take it all. They did Just that. Their leader, Bill Huddart, and the gang came up from the small town of Maricopa like an Arizona dust devil to wreak havoc. Their home bar, The Race-way bar and grill in Maricopa should be proud. Bill’s second in command, Walt Mros, along with guys like Ken Kulinowski, Michael Stephens, Michael and Sean Spurling and Paul Kowalski reminded us all how the game was meant to be played, Not only with sportsman-ship but with style.

Another Dead Ball playing out of Main Street Billiards figured that if their 9 Ball team’s performance in Las Vegas last year wasn’t enough to show everyone how good they are, they would show us all that their 8 Ball team was just as good. With the addition of only 2 new players this year, Kevin Hutson’s team is the same as last year’s team. With Mike Michaels in the number 2 spot, He and Kevin were backed up by Richard Coon and Heather Michelle. And if that wasn’t enough to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents, Jesse Gwalt-ney and new comer to the team Oscar Herrera Sr. would be there to back them up. And, just as it ended last year in the 9 Ball finals, Ellysa Brice is again the heroine bringing home the victory to her team.

Last but certainly not least, we can’t forget Dragon Ballz 2. These guys from Bullshooters, led by the fearsome Karloz Chavez, is always ready to take on any opponent, anytime. With his trusty ‘Right Hand Man’ Charles Doyle at his side, Karloz led his Cue Stick wielding team into war, winning each and every battle to stay undefeated throughout the entire tournament. With huge victories from Sam San Martin and Armando Calleros, their dominance could be seen early on. The contributions from the lower skilled players like Lavern Carrick, Martin Rosales and Alisha Bader made it possible for the team to continue winning, proving the value of every member of an APA team.

8 Ball Jack & Jill Doubles teams:

Marc Underwood and Audrey Grieser won their spot during the Valentine day Jack & Jill tourna-ment held at Main Street Billiards back in Febru-ary.

Bernie Lewis and Susan Gearity qualified as the winners of the ‘Friday Night Date Night Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles’ league played at Stingers each Friday night.

Congratulations to all the teams going to Las Vegas to participate in this year’s World Pool Champion-ships, and the best of luck.

Emmons over Pettipiece at Bullshooters

Bobby Emmons won an expanded One Pocket Madness event at Bullshooters on June 4th.

Tournament director, Tres Kane found himself with more than 16 confirmed players for this event, and ended up opening up the field to 22 players.

Emmons dropped the hot-seat match to Scott Frost 2-1 and made the trip to the west side of the board. After winning the hot-seat, Frost forfeited out of the event and settled for second place.

On the one loss side, Bernie Pettipiece was on a roll. After a loss to Frost on the winner’s side, Pettipiece eliminated Nick Kline and Pete Lhotka to earn his place against Emmons in the one loss side match that would determine 1st and 3rd place.

Emmon’s won that final match 2-1 for first place.

Boyer Undefeated at Skip & Jan’s

Mike Boyer completed an undefeated run through a field of eleven players to win Skip & Jan’s 525 & under Fargo 9-Ball tournament on June 18th.

Boyer ran through the winner’s side with wins over William Weiss, Cathy Kel-ley and Dan Lorett, before a hill-hill win over Kenny Onnembo for the hot-seat.

Onnembo had defeated John Marquis just prior to the hot-seat match, and Marquis wasn’t ready to head home just yet. Wins over Michael Urbanski and William Weiss earned Marquis another shot at Onnembo in the semi-finals. Onnembo would score win #2 over Marquis in the semi-finals 4-0.

The finals went one set with Boyer winning another hill-hill match over Onnembo for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Mike Boyer $2502nd Kenny Onnembo $1453rd John Marquis $70

Four winners were crowned at Stingers’ Jacks and Jills scotch doubles events at Stingers on June 4th, but it was Chad Metivier & Sophia Morquecho who went home with the most prize money. This event featured 16 “Jacks” teams, and 9 “Jills” teams, facing off in separate scotch 9-ball divisions.

In the Jacks event, Burt Balancad & Chad Metivier were the team to beat, as they took the hot-seat with a win over Karloz Chavez & Eric Calleros. Karloz & Eric would settle for third place, as they then lost to Justin Turner & Jose Luis Delaluz.

To prove how evenly matched the final two teams were, the finals went to two hill-hill sets. Justin & Jose won set #1, with Burt & Chad coming back to win set #2.

The Jills event crowned it’s champions much earlier in the evening, with Sophia Morquecho & Amanda Pulley going undefeated for the win. Sophia & Amanda took the hot-seat with a close 7-5 win over Justine Bishop & Jaye Succo.

On the one loss side, Cathy Kelley & Leandrea Gaff eliminated Justine & Jaye 5-4 to earn their place in the finals.

Cathy & Leandrea would have to settle for 2nd on this day, as Sophia & Amanda ran away with a 7-1 win in the first set of the finals.

In a unique format twist, the two winning teams were then split up for a “Jack & Jill” challenge match for another $100 in prize money. This match saw Chad & Sophia defeat Burt & Aman-da hill-hill, for the final win.

Estrada & Stewart take down Kitty’s event

Eric Estrada & Rick Stewart found their path to first place temporarily blocked, but came back with a vengeance to win Kittys’ 14 & Under 9-Ball event on June 4th.

Estrada & Stewart dropped the hot-seat match to Kevin Peevey & Stephanie Martin 5-3, for their first (and only) loss.

Eric & Rick then found Andy Benavidez & Lawrence Ybarra waiting on the one loss side. Andy & Lawrence had lost their first match of the day, 6-5, to Eric & Rick. History would repeat itself, as Eric & Rick won the rematch by the same 6-5 score.

The finals would see Eric & Rick confidently win game after game. The first set went to Eric & Rick 6-0, and the second set was just a little closer at 6-2.

Complete Payouts:1st Eric Estrada & Rick Stewart $3202nd Kevin Peevey & Stephanie Martin $1503rd Andy Benavidez & Lawrence Ybarra $30

Wiley & Moore at Kitty’s

Brothers are usually competitive, and older brothers like to pick on their young-er siblings. Sometimes though, the younger brother just has to bring their older tormenters down a notch or two. That was exactly what Robert Moore (and his partner Joe Wiley) did to the older Randell Moore (and Ron Shuman) at Kitty’s 13 & Under Scotch 9-Ball tournament on June 18th.

It was the older brother, Randell, who took the hot-seat with his partner Ron Shuman. They defeated Robert and Joe Wiley 7-2.

After Joe & Robert eliminated Lewis Higgins & Mike Gashwazra, the brotherly rematch in the finals was on. The first set of the double elimination finals went to Joe & Robert 6-4, with the second set also being won by Joe & Robert 6-5 to first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Robert Moore & Joe Wiley $4202nd Randell Moore & Ron Shuman $1903rd Lewis Higgins & Mike Gashwazra $504th Dennis Winkler & Jim Poppino $30

Smith & Ashworth Win at Kitty’s

Dave Smith & Shawn Ashworth might have lost the hot-seat match, but they got the last laugh at Kittys’ 15 & Under 9-Ball tournament on June 25th.

Smith & Ashworth lost the match for the hot-seat to John “JW” Walsh & Mike Atma 7-2, but that didn’t seem to slow down their games one bit.

Playing with complete confidence, Smith & Ashworth then defeated the team of Randell Moore & Tony Yuzuik hill-hill in the semi-final match.

The finals were two close sets with Dave & Shawn defeating JW & Mike in set #1 hill-hill, and set #2 6-4 for the “come from behind” tournament win.

Complete Payouts:1st Dave Smith & Shawn Ashworth $3402nd John Walsh & Mike Atma $1703rd Randell Moore & Tony Yuzuik $90
