It looks like the worst of the summer is finally behind us. I am looking forward to getting out and playing in some local pool tournaments. We have a big event coming up in October as Bullshooters and Tres Kane are putting on a $4000 added One Pocket Tournament. Even if you are not a one pocket player, you owe it to yourself to get out and watch the top one pocket players in this one. We welcomed Shooters Bar to the pages of the paper last month, and Jacj Cheesman is their new tournament director. Check out their ad on page 33 for their tournament schedule. Some of our rooms have recieved some nice accolades. Stinger’s was chosen best Sports Bar on the Westside in the New Times and AzCentral named Main Street Billiards and Bullshooters as two of the top spots to play pool in the Valley.

Until November... - Mike

Knobby’s held their monthly open 8 ball tournament on Friday Sept. 7th, 2012.

Seventeen players came out take a chance at $460.00 total prize money. The tournament format was race to 2 games on the winner side and the loser side.

Jerry Stuckart played Burt Balancad for the hot seat. Jerry and Burt went hill hill. This gave Jerry the break in which he ran the table, beating Burt 2-1.

Meanwhile, Oscar Avila beat Ed Scott 2-1, giving Ed $20.00 for 4th place. Burt then faced Oscar where Oscar won 2-0. Burt got $70.00 for 3rd place.

Oscar had his match with Jerry, but Jerry was still on fire and he won 2-0 and took home $230.00 for 1st place and Oscar got $130.00 for 2nd place.

Knobby’s next tournament will be held Friday Oct. 5th, 2012. They always provide food for all the players and with a 200% payback. You have to give this tournament a try.

It was another strong field at Stinger’s 9’s & Under Pool Tournament on September 22nd and 23rd, and with so many of the top Phoenix bar table players, it was hard to pick a true favorite.

Two players that pushed their way out in front of the rest of the field were Mike Williams and Jerry Stuckart. Stuckart had notable wins over Tres Kane and Jose Gonzalez, while Williams had notable wins over Mike Kennedy, Carlos Avalos, Chad Barber and Ken Gouso. With Williams and Stuckart remaining undefeated on Saturday, they came back on Sunday to fight it out for the hot-seat.

Meanwhile, Sunday play on the one loss side kicked off with Chad Barber and Ken Gouso. Both players had lost to Williams on Saturday and both players were looking for a shot at re-venge on Sunday. The match on the one loss side would be a quick one as Barber sent Gouso to the rail in 4th place by the score of 7-3.

The match on the winners side was much closer, with both players tied at 5-5 before Williams finally clawed ahead by 2 games at 7-5. The match would go to Williams by the score of 9-6 and Stuckart headed to the left side of the board to face Barber.

Being only one match away from the finals, Barber turned his game up a notch and Stuckart seemed unable to match this new speed from Barber. Chad took a 2-0 lead and never looked back, winning the match 7-1.

The finals would be a race to full handicap, with Barber going to 8 and Williams going to 9. Williams drew first blood and led the match 2-0. Barber stayed with Williams though, and finally

took the lead at 6-5. The players would battle back and forth from there, until Barber finally won the match 8-8 to force a second set.

The second set started out a lot like the first set, with Williams racing out to a 2-0 lead. But this match would see no Barber comeback as Williams kept the pres-sure on and didn’t lose a game until rack seven. Barber would win two racks to get back to 6-2, but Williams went on to win the set from there 8-2.

With the Desert Classic Tour at Stinger’s in October, there will not be another big added money tourney until November.

I would like to take so time to respond to all the pool players who read my Ask Mike column last month.

First, it should be noted that you never know what articles, papers or publications are be-ing read. Well, from theresponse that I have gotten, AZ Billiards is a hit with the pool and dart communities. I have written my column for over20 years and never have heard so much talk about one article.

First lets clear the air on a couple things, I was askeda question and responded in the only way I know - to the point and honest. I have heard that some of the facts may not be correct and if you think so, I am sorry. I do have sales re-ceipts, camera shots and more to back up my claims.

Second I was asked to take over a Sunday night tourna-ment when Northern Lounge unfortunately closed. Larry is a great friend & I wanted the tradition to go on. It started slow but with Sophia’s promo-tion and tenacity it got bigger

and better. At times things got a little crazy, but for the most part it was a success.

Then the article, and all the goodstuff goes away and people wont ever play at Bull Shooters again. Wow! A little drastic, but apparently feelings were hurt and I understand that. But the points made were for a select few and as I told Sophia, If players were guilty of what I wrote, why would you want them in your tournament any-way?

We have great patrons, pool players, dart players, foosball players, karaoke singers etc. They all do it their own way, some may not drink but buy a soda, some food or play games. And those who think I don’t like pool play-ers, that is a joke.

We spend more on pool than all other things combined at Bull Shooters. Tens of thousands of dollars are spent recovering, purchasing equipment and maintaining the tables. You wanted bar box Diamonds, I bought two. Tighter pockets on more nine footers? Done. New carpet? Done.

We have more leagues (TAP, APA, BCA, BCS, Rack n Roll, Hot Shotz, Sharks and more) out of Bull Shoot-

ers. We are a pool hall and we need pool players. And according to many publications, not just the best pool hall in AZ, but one of the best in theCountry.

When no one would step up for the AWBT a few years back, I told them I would take all tournaments they need-ed me to take. If someone canceled on them, I took it and added money for a second chance.

The Desert Classic Tour is great andwe support that.

APA runs lots of tournaments each year and we do what is needed. We sponsor the Juniors, have leaguesfor them and buy many $ in raffle tickets to help them travel. If someone wants to do a charity event I make it happen.

We have helped raise over $60,000 in the four years we have been open, for over 25 charities.

It doesn’t stop there, we are active in the community working to make it better. Our business and homeowners alliance has helped to keep McDonaldshere and brought in new businesses to the area like: In and Out, Culver’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Quick Trip, CVS,

and helped keep Olive Garden here. They are building a new building rather than moving.

Me and my family have worked very hard to let every-one who comes to Bull Shoot-ers know that we appreciate them. We try to treat them like family and I can’t even start to list all the great people I have met since opening Bull Shoot-ers. (And yes lots are pool players)

We try to do our own thing at Bull Shooters. I don’t go to other bars and try to buy there tournament directors to move a tournament.

I don’t call their Karaoke hosts and offer them more money. I don’t call UFC and screw over 5 or 6 bars in the area to helpmy business. I don’t advertise my stuff in others bars. We don’t need to.

We do our best to have our own identity and treat people the way we would expect them to treat us and hope they come back and tell others.

Pool Players Are Listening And Reading

It looks like pocket billiards (pool) is going to follow the lead of other professional sports such as baseball and basketball, and build a league comprised of teams based out of various cities.

This new venture is the brainchild of Larry Chiborak, an entrepreneur from Canada, who is calling his league the WPBL (World Professional Billiard League). Chiborak is also the creator of a new pocket billiard game called, Bonus Ball. Bonus Ball is played on a standard pool table, but uses a different set of balls and different rules and scoring strategies. Bonus Ball will be the game used in the WPBL.

The best news for Arizonans is that Phoenix is one of the cities to be awarded a franchise in the inaugural season of the WPBL.

The first WPBL season will find all teams play-ing out of one venue in Las Vegas. The WPBL is almost finished setting up a beautiful new arena just south of the Vegas airport, and Nov. 8 is targeted as the start up date for league play.

WPBL teams will be comprised of three regular players, with each team being assigned one or two pre-designated alternates to fill in for any regular team member(s) who may need to be excused from time to time in order to compete in other large tournaments around the country and world.

Never in the history of American billiards has a professional team concept been attempted. The

logistics involved in actually having teams compete out of their respective locales will be a monumental task to complete, but if the WPBL is successful in selling teams to franchise owners, the league would then have the potential to finally bring the sport the respect that its followers have always desired.

Phoenix was not one of the cities included in the first proposal to come out of the WPBL office. Initially, there were only eight teams on the schedule. Later plans expanded the league from eight teams to twelve. Fortunately, Phoenix was then named as one of the new teams.

The name for our new professional team will be, The Phoenix Flames. The actual members on the Flames team should be known within a couple of weeks.

Updates on the players’ names, and other WPBL progress will be made available in upcoming issues of Arizona Billiard & Dart News.

Nine Straight For Frost

Most pool players are pretty pleased to win a tournament. They are even more pleased to win two in a row. But those feats were nothing compared to Scott Frost’s run of eight straight tournament victories leading into Preacher Ronn’s One Pocket event at Kolbys on September 29th.

Frost was looking for number nine as he cruised through the winners side head-ing towards the hot-seat. Eric Young was ready to start his own streak though and he sent Frost to the one loss side 2-1 as Young took the hot seat.

On the one loss side, Bernie Pettipiece was on a run of his own, eliminating Tres Kane and Lenny Marshall before a 2-0 loss to Freezer in the semi-finals.

The final match was an extended race to three, and Frost would need it as he trailed Young 2-1 midway through the match. Frost came back with a vengeance in rack four to force a final rack. Young was the first player to have control of the deciding rack, but Frost came back to score a hard fought win and notch his 9th straight tournament win.

Frost Wins At Bullshooters

It was another full field of players at Bullshooter’s One Pocket Madness event on September 8th, and it was a familiar face taking home the win.

Marquee players in the field included Scott Frost, Bernie Pettipiece, Gus Bris-eno, Mike Pankoff, Tres Kane and Brett Huth.

As expected, Frost cruised through the winners side and captured the hot-seat when Briseno forfeited in their match.

On the one loss side, Bernie Pettipiece was taking a first round loss to Mike Pankoff in stride and laying waste to the left side of the board. Five matches later, it was Bernie and Scott in the finals.

Frost was giving Bernie 9-7 in the finals, but that proved to be a surmountable obstacle as Frost won three straight games (9-4, 9-0, 9-1)

Frost took home $260 for first place, while Bernie settled for $170 in second place prize money. Briseno and Pete Lhotka finished 3rd and 4th for $100 and $50.

Chyzy Double Dips Dernier At MetroMetro Sportz Bar’s 7’s & Under on September 22nd drew a fi eld of 22 players, and in a fi eld that included some of the best 7s in town, Dave Dernier (a six rated player) was the man to beat. Dernier took the hot-seat with a lop-sided 6-2 win over Dennis Fraley.

On the one loss side, Joe Chyzy was on a hot streak with fi ve straight wins. Chyzy ended Fraley’s run in third place and got ready for the fi nal match against Dernier.

The fi rst set of the fi nals started out close and the players were tied at 3-3 before Chyzy took command and won four straight games for the 7-3 win, forcing a second set.

The second set was another close one and was tied at 4-4. Chyzy won two games to get to the hill at 6-4 and then ended all of the suspense with a 9-ball break for the 7-4 win.

CueSports International (CSI) and Bad Boys Billiards Productions brought the 2012 BCAPL Southwest Regional Championship to the Radis-son Fort McDowell Casino in Scottsdale over the Labor Day weekend of August 30th - September 3rd. $6,000 in added prize money, courtesy of the Radisson and CSI, and 40 beautiful Diamond 7’ tables, was more than enough to draw the top players from Arizona, as well as select players from Nevada, New Mexico, California, Colo-rado, and Washington.

The event was divided into seven divisions and play got underway first in the single elimination scotch doubles division where 45 teams were able to get familiar with the tables and compete for $2000 in total prize money. This event was dominated by two teams, and it was only right to see them face off in the finals. The top half of the board saw the team of Bernie Store and Steve Stowers cruise to a spot in the finals. Store and gave up one game in their first four matches and never allowed an opposing team to win more than two games on their way to the finals.

Matching them on the way to the finals was the team of “Big Daddy” Tres Kane and Cathy Kel-ley. Kane and Kelley were not as dominating on their way to the finals, but they also did not allow an opposing team to score more than two games in any given match.

As evenly matched as these two teams appeared on paper, the finals came down to hill-hill before Stowers and Store won the case game for the 4-3 victory and $600 in prize money.

The 6 & Under event, which was added last year, was a huge success with 89 players competing this year. The event came down to a “best two out of three” face-off as Wayne Cagle and Elgin Miguel would play each other three times to determine a final victor. Miguel drew first blood with a hill-hill win over Cagle for the hot-seat, but after Cagle eliminated Collin Sayler on the one loss side, Cagle and Miguel faced off in the double elimination finals. Cagle forced a second set with a 5-3 win and then earned the tourna-ment win with a 5-4 scoreline in the second set. The win was worth $600 in prize money for Cagle.

The men’s open division, with 77 players saw a slight increase in participants and to no one’s surprise, was won by Carlos Avalos.

Avalos handled the win with his usual modesty and thought the tournament came down to a couple shots and a couple of lucky breaks here and there. Avalos made note of an early match he played against Mike Williams. Avalos com-mented, “I was fortunate because that match was originally scheduled for early afternoon but didn’t start until close to midnight. Mike had sat for several hours and was cold, and I had just come off a win. I got away with that match 5-0.” Avalos was also quick to note a shot that came up in the hot-seat match against David DelCastil-lo. With the score tied at hill-hill Avalos hooked himself on the ball before the 8-ball. After study-ing the shot, Avalos played a perfect stop shot jump shot that left him straight in on the 8-ball for the win.

The finals came down to Avalos and Jason Polk - both teammates on the “No Flash Photography” team. The friendship between the two might have taken away Jason’s killer instinct in this one as Carlos ran away with a 5-1 win for first place and $1,000 in prize money.

The Ladies Open division saw Sonia Flores come out on top of the 32 player field and take

the hot-seat with a 4-2 win over Leandrea Gaff.

On the one loss side, Gaff ran into Terry Johnson-McCauley. Gaff had sent Johnson-McCauley to the left side of the board 4-3 late in the tournament, and the rematch went to Johnson-McCauley by the same 4-3 scoreline.

This left Flores and Johnson-McCauley in the double elimination finals. The first set went to Johnson-McCauley in a 4-0 landslide, but Flores turned things around and scored an identical 4-0 whitewash in the second set of the finals.

The final singles division saw a 20 player field in the Advanced/Masters division (double the field size from last year). Brian Begay from Shiprock, New Mexico took the hot-seat with a 7-2 win over Vegas’ Ronnie Allen. Smith only had to beat Nevada’s Randy Kukla on the one loss side as Allen had already headed back home and was willing to settle for third place.

With Smith busy in team matches until very late, the finals didn’t get underway until the late Sunday night. Fortunately for all involved (except for Smith), Begay made quick work of Smith 7-3 in the finals.

Both team divisions included interesting story lines with a comeback win in one and a threepeat of sorts in the other.

The ladies division saw the Bad AZZ Babes (Sonia Flores, Sara Miller, Sophia Morquecho and Susam Williams) return with hopes of defending the title they won last year. The Babes would quickly find out that the other teams were not intimidated by the reigning champions as Diamond Dazzle out of Phoenix (Anje Anderson, Char Alcott, Salina Holland, Virginia Jen-nings and Lori Kinny) scored a first round upset. “They came with their A-Games, and we played terrible,” commented Williams after the match.

Undeterred, The Babes won five in a row on the one loss side to get to the finals against AZ Fab 4 (Beverly Cook, Kate Franco, Tonya Kurtz and Amy Wilkom-Knowlton). With two Advanced and one Master player on the team, the Bad AZZ Babes were giving up four games to other team. That handicap was not a factor in the first set of the finals as the Babes scored a quick 12-3 win. The second was an entirely different situation as The Fab 4 fought the Babes for each game. Fab 4 held a 6-5 lead and needed one game to get to the hill. They would not get that game as the Babes showed how Bad AZZ they could be with seven straight wins for the 12-6 victory and their second team title.

The final division to crown a winner was the Men’s/Mixed Team division. The defending champs, Stinger’s Venom, found themselves on the rail in 9th place early in this one, but the finals still saw a player hoping to de-fend the title as JR Burkhart had moved from Stinger’s Venom to 8 and Out this year. Burkhart had also been a member of the Tom Ryan’s team that won this divi-sion in 2010, so he was going for back to back to back wins. Burkhart and his teammates Brett Huth, Brian Reich and Jon Smith had fought back from a loss to No Flash Photography to come out of the one loss side for the finals. Their opponents, the Northern Hombres team of Oscar Avila, Tyson Cole, Larry Eans, Jose Gonzalez and Ron Weeks had taken the hot-seat with a win over Pocket Pounders from Prescott.

8 and Out would have to win two matches against the Hombres to capture the title and give Burkhart the threepeat. That threepeat looked to be in serious jeopardy in the first set with the Hombres leading 8-7 in the 9-10 race. Before Reich and Burkhart came to the table for their matches, Burkhart took Smith - the team anchor - aside and told him that he needed to be ready to play a final game for the set as Reich and Burkhart planned on winning their games. And win them they did.

Things took another bad turn for 8 and Out as Smith missed his last ball in a very difficult run and left Tyson Cole with a wide open rack at his mercy. Cole was finishing up the rack when he missed an 11-ball and then had to watch Smith make the last two balls for the 10-9 win in the first set.

Considering the late hour, the idea of a split was brought up, but 8 and Out quickly vetoed that idea as they were playing for first place and anything less would not be satisfying. The Hombres came out with the first two games in the finals, but 8 and Out quickly took control and won 10 of the next 12 games. In a fitting conclusion to the event, it was three time champion Burkhart who pocketed the final 8-ball to give his team the win.

All in all, the event was a great success with a 25% increase in participation from last year and what looks to be a very bright future as more and more players come out to compete in this event.

CSI and the BCA Pool League thanks the follow-ing for their support and contributions to this year’s event: Bad Boys Billiard Productions for out-standing tournament direction, Diamond Billiard Products for the great playing tables, the Radisson Fort McDowell for their sponsorship and support as host of the event, the Fort McDowell Casino, AZBilliards for the best online coverage of pool on the planet, Rick Schmitz for his great photography as usual, and the BCA Pool League Operators of Arizona and other states for making sure their play-ers had an opportunity to attend.

Troy Conley wins the Preliminary round to the U.S. Amateur Championship Pool tourna-ment at Bullshooters on Sunday, September 23. The U S Amateur Championship has become the most prestigious event for amateur pool play-ers in the country. Troy will be competing in the finals held in Tampa Florida in November for a complimentary spot on a pro tour event in 2013. The 2 day event saw some very heavy competition from some of the best amateur pool players in Phoenix, Tucson, and New Mexico. The format of the event is a race to 7 games of a combination of 8 ball and 9 ball. The winner of the flip chooses whether he wants to break, or which format to start the match. Competitors will play 5 games of 8 ball or 8 games of 9 ball until one of the players wins 7 games. Whichever format is selected, all games in that format must be played before changing to the other format. The final round is a race to 11 wins, 8 games of 8 ball and 13 games of 9 ball. Play is always on the 9 foot tables.

In the Semi finals, Troy got past Peter ‘Rocky’ Sianez Sr from Tucson and then defeat-ed David Rayner in the finals, who had made it to the hot seat after the first day of stiff competi-tion.

Chuck Foster, from Las Cruzes New Mexico also wins a spot in Tampa in November. He will be joining Troy to play in the finals held in that city. Both players displayed extremely good play and we want to wish them both lots of luck in Tampa.

The U.S. Amateur Championship, sponsored by the American Poolplayers Asso-ciation (APA), was started in 1994. Since the

inauguration of this event in 1994, the level of competi-tion continues to improve year after year. Only a small percentage of the best amateur players choose to play for the glory and love of the game. Those who enter this event experience the highest level of amateur billiard play in the United States. Therefore, the U.S. Amateur Championship is only intended for the finest amateur players. The competition is relentless, and every match won is well deserved. Preliminary events are held all across the United States in several different cities.

Anyone can play in these events by signing up in advance. The 2012 finals are now set, but anyone interested in playing in the 2013 event can contact your

local APA representative at 602-920-9192. Signups for next year begin April 15 and end on June 30 of 2013. The local APA also has a ‘Masters Divi-sion’ that mimicks the same format as the U S Amateur competition.

Salgado At KittysJR Salgado re-turned to Kitty’s winners circle with an unde-feated run through the 7’s and under event on Septem-ber 15th.

Salgado was just one of the mar-quee players in this one, as the field also included such notables as Tom Leutz, Brian Poore, Amado Martinez, Tony Yuzuik, Todd Dilley and Johnny Garcia.

Salgado took the hot-seat with a win over Andrew “Paco” Rocha, and got com-fortable waiting for an opponent in the finals.

On the one loss side, Rocha found Brian Poore waiting. Poore had lost to Sal-gado, but eliminated Dilley, Garcia, Yuzuik and Leutz on the left side.

The Rocha/Poore match went to hill-hill before Rocha pulled out the win.

The finals was another hill-hill match, with Salgado getting the win after Rocha pocketed the 9-ball and scratched on the same shot.

Final Payouts:1st JR Salgado $3202nd Andrew Rocha $1403rd Brian Poore $120

The hot-seat match pitted Dan Young and Andrew Rocha against BBQ and Joe Masi. This battle went hill/hill before BBQ and Joe came away with the hot seat.

The match for 3rd-4th pitted John Romo and Tom Johnson against Eric Lervold and Chris Carpenter. After another hill-hill match, Eric and Chris went on to meet Andrew and Dan for 2nd-3rd. For their efforts John and Tom took 4th place and won $90.00

The match for 2nd-3rd matched Andrew and Dan against Eric and Chris. Once again this match went hill-hill. Eric and Chris went on to meet BBQ and Joe for 1st and 2nd. Andrew and Dan came away with 3rd place and $220.00

By the end of the day, Eric and Chris had gone through the entire one loss side after losing their first match. Due to the lateness of the hour it was decided to split 1st and 2nd. For their efforts, BBQ and Joe went home with $740.00, while Eric and Chris went home with $500.00

September 15th & 16th, at Pockets, in Tucson, played host to twenty-seven (27) ladies of the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour (AWBT). $800 in added money made for the largest prize fund in many years on the AWBT. Susan Williams came out as champion in a 9-7 finals win over Stacy Allsup of Las Vegas, NV. With the win, Susan won $350 and took over the AWBT points lead from an absent Angel Paglia. For 2nd place, Stacy earned $240 and is third in the tour point standings. With two events left, it should be a tight race for the Tour Crown.

Pockets is a great place for pool and for the second year in a row we saw an increase in the number of entries. We welcomed new players Ashley Baker (7th place), Teri Curtis, both from the Phoenix area and Marlene Nickerson, from Tucson, as well as some who had been away for awhile, Lois Schmitt and Anne Gray, both from Tucson. The friendly, but intense competition left spots for Sunday’s Final 8 wide open.

Renay (Claudia) Justus had her highest finish in years, tied for 7th/8th with Ashley Baker. So-phia Morquecho, stepping up to the big tables, had a real nice tournament and finished 5th/6th. Tucson’s Michelle Trevino, moving up one spot from last year, also finished 5th/6th. If she ever gets more playing time, watch out AWBT leaders! Sara Miller fought her way through the one-loss side to get 4th and also claim the fourth spot in tour points. Susan Wilbur finished in 3rd place. The Tucson pool crowd was out in force to watch our ladies play some fine pool. The AWBT appreciates your support!

We would like to thank Lenny Johnson, owner of Pockets, for his continued support of the AWBT. He added $300 to the main tournament

and generously kicked in an additional $100 to the 2nd Chance tournament. We wish the best to his son and daughter in law who got married Saturday night. Al-though this limited Lenny’s time at the tournament, his staff did a great job in mak-ing sure everybody got fed and had plenty of drinks.

In the 2nd Chance tourna-ment on Sunday, a record seventeen (17) players returned for a shot at redemption and a little cash. Anne Gray, of Tucson, knocked the dust off her cue to finish in 1st place! Cindy Yazzie, of Farmington, New Mexico was 2nd. Beth Orth won the cue raffle.

Thanks to the friends of the AWBT for donating $200 to the main event prize fund. We encourage this kind behavior. Become a friend of the AWBT today!

Thanks to Sara Miller for her extraordinary work with the cue raffle. Her hard work is helping to bring added money to our events. Thanks to my co-director Kristie Ortega and her man Scooter for running another great show.

Our next tournament will be October 27-28 at BullShooters in Phoenix, AZ. Hope to see you there and please, bring a friend.

When Randy announces that he will be running a $1000 blind draw tournament at Jimbo’s, the players come out in droves. That was the case again on Septem-ber 21st as a field of 58 players competed in the event. The field could have been filled as six players arrived late, but were turned away.

The winners side came down to Kelli Wise & Scotty Biblik beating Mary Mor-row and JC Martinez in a rubber game to take the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Pete Linares & Cathy Breckenfelder beat Sandra Yorgen-son & Kix Alcala, and Sabrina Mokuahi & Dario Meza beat Rich Schoen & Dhana Gober in 5th/6th.

Sabrina & Dario kept their strong play going and sent Pete and Cathy home in 4th place.

The battle for 2nd and 3rd place was a close one and went to a rubber game to determine a final winner. Things were looking good for Mary & JC in the final match until Dario threw three perfect darts (2 double bulls and a 15) to close out the game for him and Sabrina.

The final match would see Dario and Sabrina face the task of beating Kelli and Scotty twice, and that is exactly what they did. Dario and Sabrina dominated both matches, not losing one game, to capture first place.

In addition to the $1040 in prize money given out at this event, $360 was raised for the dart playing Breast Cancer walkers via a 50/50 raffle.

Players are urged to mark November 3rd down on their calendars as Randy will be holding a Breast Cancer Benefit tournament on that day.

Dart Player Profile: Lisa YeeWith October being Breast Cancer Aware-ness Month, it was suggested that Lisa Yee be our spotlight dart player of the month. With Lisa’s participa-tion in Breast Cancer Aware-ness Fundraisers (as well as just about every other dart tour-nament in the valley), we couldn’t agree more with the suggestion.

Name: Lisa YeeYears Playing: Approx 10 yrsMPR or PPD: 3.1 - 3.5. Depends on league or tournament play. I’m a way bet-ter tournament player than league player.Brand of Darts used: Dynasty dartsBiggest Win or Accomplishment: There have been a few that stick out in my mind. The biggest accomplishment and win would be 2008 NDA and making team USA for the first time. Then hitting the winning shot for the women’s team to win the international challenge. Also a great accomplishment is the respect that I earned from my fellow dart players. What got you started playing darts: The way I got started was being at the right spot at the right time. I was eating dinner when a player didn’t show for the first night of league and I volunteered to play. Boy did I fall in love with the sport instantly.Home Room (s): Its funny that ask about home bars. Earlier this year, my home closed their doors after so many years. The Ox sports bar unfortunately closed and sent me homeless. Lucky for me Jester’s Billiards, Old Brass Rail and Cash Inn have givne me a new place to call home. They have welcomed all the play-ers with open arms.

Arizona Billiard & Dart NewsOctober 2012

Mike, I am about a 2.5 shooter and everyone keeps telling me to go “play with the big boys” to get better. What are your thoughts on this and handi-capped leagues?

Mike: I am with “everyone” on this one. If you play with and against better players, you yourself will get better, it has been documented. You don’t have to play them one on one; just go where they go, draw them in a tournament and pay attention.

Pick their brains for pointers, most are more than happy to help a lower player. And you don’t have to pick the top play-er, anyone with experience who is a decent player can help.

Let them go first and if they ask you to shoot a number, shoot it.

If you question it, ask them afterwards why they had you do it.

The most frustrating thing for an above average player is to draw someone who is way lower or just a beginner and them jump up and go first or shoot something off the wall. That will prob-ably end any hope of them helping you.

Get in the B master league, learn the games and move up. That is the way to go.

Now on handicapped leagues: they are a necessary evil as far as I am con-cerned. You have to have them, but most do nothing more than prolong the inevitable or frustrate all the players.

It has to be the right system and I haven’t seen one yet. When you have top players going against lower play-ers, it is the end of the game that makes a difference way more than the

beginning.

Most middle of the road players can shoot bulls and get down, but taking the game out is another problem and it is where you separate the players.

So, more than just practicing cricket or 01, play count up and shoot different outs to make sure that when you have a 39, you know what to shoot.

So in closing, go learn from the good players, and we have lots - both Men and Women. For a player to be suc-cessful in a handicapped league, they must be able to hit their outs.

That is just my opinion and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

By Mike Bates

Ask Mike

It was just a regular Saturday Night Dart Tourna-ment, but for some reason 48 players decided it was time to get out and play. It was a 300% payout at Bullshooters and with 48 players, that meant $480 added and a $720 payout. But, that wasn’t enough so Bullshooters made it $800 total and the fun began.

Twenty four teams would square off for the cash and lots of fun. The darts were flying and drinks were flowing. From the beginning, one of the top teams looked to be Eric Barron and Andy Bates, and they were steamrolling and would be tough to beat.

Ray Gerbert and Tom McCartney would have something to say about that. From out of no-where, a surprise team would be Larry Colburn and Mike Bates.

While the tournament rolled on, they took a break to shoot the outshot. Rick Breckinfelder was drawn a hit a 146 out to win $500, nice shot!

Back to the tournament; Eric and Andy would beat the surprise squad of Mike and Larry. Ray and Tom took them out and played for the finals. Eric and Andy proved to much and won the match for the cash.

Final Payouts:1st Eric Barron & Andy Bates $3402nd Ray Gerbert & Tom Mac $2203rd Mike Bates & Larry Colburn $1404th Scott Bielik & Tom Blanchard $805th/6th $20 each

By David “The Scorpion” Fatum

Times are Changing!!!

Well, the future of darts in America is here!!! By the time this paper is in print, the USA will have seen a glimpse of what the future of soft tip darts will look like with the DART-SLIVE US OPEN being played in Las Vegas.

The event offers big money to those that can battle the field of the best players from the USA and the World but it also offers a new look at what soft-tip ma-chines will be and should be.

The singles first prize is $12,000, which is by far more money than 98% of any Ameri-can player has played for, but it also has big money prizes for lower rated players as well.

Another Asian manufacture is also following on the heels of DARTSLIVE called Phoenix. Both are radically different than anything we use here in

the USA and have much more to offer then just a different look.

Dartslive is about having fun playing darts again and realizing that most dart players do not go to the “big” events, but rather like to come out and have a good time. You go out to throw with friends or to play in-house leagues so why pay extra money to belong to a group like the NDA if you do not go to Vegas?

Also, these boards open you to playing online against all of the world and es-pecially Asia where there is a hot bed of players. Online play really helps your game as it is like going in and playing challenge matches anytime of the day you want to, no longer just the same old local players.

You get a players card that will track every game you play and allows you to earn/steal screen savers from other players when you defeat them. It also gives you access to go online and see where players are at playing and how

they are doing.

The days of sandbagging your aver-ages will be much more difficult as now EVERY game you play will be recorded.

I am more partial to the Dartslive ma-chines as I love the LED back lighting that makes it easy to see the board and what is going on in the game. I play on their Pro Tour in Asia called the WORLD as well. The grand prize for winning the FINAL is $125,000 US so not a bad days work if you can make it ;)

The future of darts in America is changing and there is real excitement in the air about it, the days of “that is the way it has always been” are over. It is a good time to be playing darts and I am glad to be apart of what’s coming.

Look for Dartslive machines to start showing up in the Phoenix area in Oc-tober and Phoenix machines as well.

Fatum Repeats at GPMA #3

Congratulations to Dave Fatum, who defended his title at the GPMA Players Series #3, held at Bullshooters on September 15th.

Fatum dominated the field, and beat Kix Alcala in the final match to win his second straight GPMA Players Series Event.

There was no B player event, due to lack of players.

The GPMA Players Series will take a short hiatus and will be back with Series #4 soon.

New Outshots, New Fun at Bullshooters

When running a dart tournament twice a week on Friday and Saturday nights, it gets kind of “same old / same old”. You are always looking at a way to get new interest and get the players talking about something. So Bull Shooters came up with out shots that are different from the norm.

First we take care of the ladies with their own shot that only they can win. Each person gets one ticket, so everyone in the tournament has at least one shot at winning.

Before the tournament, numbers are selected and sealed in an envelope with the money and number they need to hit. Ladies will have a shot between 51 and 101, with three darts to take it out. Since the start, three ladies - Tee Areola, Jes-sica Price and Jo Brown - have hit the jackpot. Last Saturday, Jo hit a 93 out for $160.00.

The open shot is available to men and ladies. On September 21st, Eric Barron hit it for $500. Three weeks before, Rick Breckinfelder did the same. Rick hit a 146 and Eric a 144.

When we reach $500, we add a third shot with the extra cash and that got up to $360, and a fourth for $100.

It is an added incentive to come out and play, and the players love it.

It was a small field of 14 teams at Stinger’s $1000 dart shoot on September 22nd, but that didn’t stop Dale from adding the money needed to cover the guaranteed prize money.

The winners side came down Kix & Mo vs Tom B & Larry. Kix & Mo had not lost a single game leading into that match, but Tom & Larry broke through and forced a rubber game before Kix & Mo won the match and the hot-seat.

On the left side of the board, Dario Meza (still playing just as strong as he had the night before at Jimbo’s) & Pat had bounced back nicely from a first round loss to Ron & Thad. Dario & Pat had won four in a row leading up to their match with Tom & Larry, and took the first game of the match to put Tom & Larry in a “must win” spot. “Must Win” is what Tom & Larry did as they won the last two games to set up a rematch with Kix & Mo in the finals.

Tom & Larry came out strong and took the 1st and 3rd games of the first set to force a second set against Kix & Mo to determine a winner.

It was Tom & Larry winning the first game of the second set, but Kix & Mo quickly evened things out with a win in the second game. The final game saw Mo come to the board needing a triple 15 for the win. He took his time and hit the triple 15 on his first dart to win the match for him and Kix.

Final Payouts:1st Kix & Mo $5002nd Tom B & Larry $2403rd Dario & Pat $1204th Justin & Dube $805th Ron & Thad $405th Heath & Frank $407th Nikki & Tom A $207th Jo & Brown $20

You have stripes here. You are now on the 8-ball. Your oppo-nent has 2 solids left. What do you do?

“Kick at the 8-ball to make a legal hit!”

“Massé around the solid!”

“Kick at it with lots of speed and try to bank it across the table!”

Suckers.

Here’s a situation where taking an intentional foul will stack the odds in your favor, whereas doing the “right thing” and attempting a legal hit on the 8-ball is suicide. In this case, if you try to hit the 8-ball, you will likely solve your oppo-nent’s problem by breaking the solid ball and 8-ball cluster and giving them an easy run out. Therefore, there is no payoff in making a legal hit on the 8-ball.

Instead, make an illegal hit and pocket their solid ball in the jaws of the corner pocket and give them ball-in-hand. Now it is almost impossible for them to run out and also almost impossible for them to play safe.

Now instead of watching your op-ponent run out, you get to watch him struggle. Your chances of winning are much higher with this approach than if you try to make a legal hit on the 8-ball.

What Would A Sucker Do?

Deli Sports Bar 9’s & Under Winners

The Deli Sports Bar drew twenty four players to their Saturday night 9s & Un-der 9-Ball tournament on August 25th. The field included a couple new faces, including BBQ. BBQ faced Tyson Cole for the hot-seat and came out with a 2-1 win.

Cole went to the one loss side for a short stay as he won the toss against Gilbert Ortiz and proceeded to break and run for the win.

Instead of facing off again, BBQ and Tyson agreed to split the $245 1st and 2nd prize.

One week later, a field of twenty one players were in attendance, and it was Chris Carpenter splitting duty as tournament director and tournament winner.

Chris took home $125 for first, while Dana Moore settled for $60 in second place prize money. Don Burns and Adam Payan filled out the top four spots.

Deli Expansion Complete

The long awaited expansion at The Deli Sports Bar is now complete and they have added 1200 square feet of space to the existing 2400 square foot room.

With the added space, two more pool tables have been added, as well as a Golden Tee machine and an electronic Bowling machine.

Don’t worry about not being able to see the TV’s across the added space. All of the TV’s have been replaced with larger model.

The added space has also allowed the Saturday Night 9’s and Under 9-Ball tournament to raise the race to 2 on the winners side and 1 on the one loss side. The change is being greeting positively by the players and fields have already started to grow.

Shane Van Boening, the top ranked pool player in the U. S., came to Phoe-nix for a week-long visit in Septem-ber. Here for a little R&R after a playing stint in the Phillipines, Van Boening stayed with his good friend and frequent traveling partner, Randy “Scoobie” Pelton.

While in town, Van Boening was a daily visitor at Bull Shooters Billiards. There, he practiced in the afternoons, and in the evenings, took on challenges from local strongmen in their favorite games of choice. Most often, Shane had to give up heavy spots in those match-ups, but most often, he still managed to come out ahead.

Bull Shooters’ owner, Mike Bates, said of Van Boening, “I’ve been watching him play for three days and still can’t believe how good he is! Bull Shooters is honored to have him here.”

During October, Van Boening is scheduled to play in tournaments in Poland and the Philippines, before returning to the States to play in the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship in Norfolk, Virginia.

We wish Shane Van Boening continued success in his career, and we thank him for being one of our sport’s finest role models. We also hope he comes to visit us many more times in the future.
