Truth…on the FlyWhere Everybody Knows Your NameOver the years I’ve noticed something that is fairly common in churches. Although most operate with a slogan, something like, “Everyone Is Welcome” – usually churches don’t really act like it. They probably mean well in saying it, but if people actually show up who aren’t insiders, they don’t really feel welcome.
Saying that everyone is welcome, and making everyone feellike they are valued are two very different things.
I still rank “Cheers” as one of the top Cive television series of all time. Set in an unspectacular sports bar in Boston, it featured a line-‐up of characters that were all a few ticks off center, nearly drove each other crazy, but hung together anyway out of friendship and necessity. Every Thursday night the theme song reminded us that this was a place “Where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came.” Norm and Clifford, Frazier and Woody – those names may not have meant anything to anyone else in the world, but at Cheers they were valuable and welcomed, not with a slogan but with a relationship.
And honestly, whether it was a bar, or a church, or anywhere else…don’t you think that everyone would like to Cind a place where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came? A place where you counted – and no matter how long you were away, they were always glad when you came back?
Philip Yancey writes of a conversation with an alcoholic friend of his. He shares about the virtues of Alcoholic Anonymous, often absent in churches. “When I’m late to church, people turn around and stare at me with frowns of disapproval. I get the clear message that I’m not as responsible as they are. When I’m late to AA, the meeting comes to a halt and everyone jumps up to hug and welcome me. They realize that my lateness may be a sign that I almost didn’t make it. When I show up it proves that my desperate need for them won out over my desperate need for alcohol.”
It seems to me that in light of all that God has done for us, the church should be the most gracious and embracing place in the whole world. I believe that it ought to be the kind of place…
• Where they knew you were a little bit crazy, but loved you anyway• Where they didn’t act like you needed to have it all put together before you came through the door• Where they said it was alright to bring along your hurts and your hang-‐ups• Where they didn’t focus on how long you’d been gone, but on how great it was that you came back• Where they always made you feel like you counted • Where it felt like family – because they always knew your name, and they were always glad you came
If there is anything that I am proud of in GracePointe Church, it is the incredible warmth with which you embrace every single person who comes through our doors. It reminds me all over again why I love the Church and why it is God’s hope for the world. Keep on doin’ what you’re doin’…make sure that every single time it feels like they are coming home – where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came.

A good timePastor Rich reported that a group of 16 attended the Molalla Buckeroo Rodeo last month. Stopping first for dinner at Izzy’s, the evening was a great success and as one person stated “lots of fun!”
One busy ladyShirley McClung (again) was busy for months gathering donations for the Cruise-In raffle. Shirley has the wonderful ability to state information about Backpack Buddies and then ask for a donation. Merchants and individuals donated cash, gift cards and merchandise to the raffle. Shirley works hard and we want her to know how much she is appreciated.

This summer many of us will be camping in God’s beautiful wilderness areas in Oregon. Some of us have wonderful memories of attending men, women, children or family camps.
Linda Wilbur enthusiastically share some of her 40 years of going to Camp Tadmor. It was a priority for her and her family. Her two children went from age
5 to high school and then served on the camp staff. She relates that it was not only a great time of fellowship with people from all over Oregon, but a time of growth for the whole family.
Camping in Tadmor’s 205 acres of beautiful woods, streams, waterfalls and manmade lake is an awesome experience. It’s also a time of learning, sports, laughter, making new friends, of course, getting closer to our Lord.
In July, 16 women from our church attended a special women’s weekend with an outstanding speaker from Western Seminary.
GracePointe Church is thankful to be a supporter of Camp Tadmor. Financial funds are always needed for scholarships to send needy children to camp. The purpose of the Tadmor staff is to challenge the campers to know Jesus Christ in a personal way.

Food for BACKPACK BUDDIES:
Lewelling School is one of the sites for Summer School and that allowed us to continue delivering the weekend food bags to our buddies. Children from Linwood, Campbell, Ardenwald and Lewelling attended this site and since St Paul’s Methodist serves Linwood School they partnered with us for the five week session. The Oregon Food Bank delivered fresh produce weekly to Lewelling and several volunteers from our church helped distribute the fruits and vegetables to our backpack buddy families. This fall we are looking forward to serving the Lewelling families and providing a holiday meal for the families. Please call one of our coordinators to help in this practical community outreach ministry. Monthly food bagging – Shirley Johnson, Food shopping – April Fuller or Bonnie Marston.
