The use of definite & indefinite articles is very similar in English & Spanish. A few differences are:
1) Nationality/ profession/ occupation:
NO ARTICLESoy estudiante
UNLESS AN ADJECTIVE IS ADDED
Soy un estudiante inteligente.

2) Talking ABOUT people with titles:
Definite ARTICLEEl profesor Gómez-Canseco es español.
Me gusta la doctora González.
When talking directly to a person with a title, just like in English, no article at all:
Buenas tardes, profesor Gómez-Canseco
