Winter is in full vigor here in the Midcoast of Maine. The days are getting longer though, and we have had plenty of beautiful snow to look at and enjoy. Thank you Lord! In a few weeks, Robin, Lily, and I will be heading over to a church off the coast of Portugal (more details to come on Facebook), where I have been invited to speak for a couple of Sundays to allow the pastor there to go away to a missions conference. I want to take this opportunity to share with you the exciting things that God is doing in their church of 100 or so. The pastor there describes their fellowship in the following way: This congregation IS the church at Corinth, at least most of them. We have about 9 members of our church, but we have about 100 people attending every Sunday. Maybe 20 are Americans, most are Portuguese. Since last February, 57 or so people have professed Christ as Savior, this is unprecedented in Portugal, where 99% of the population is Roman Catholic. I've baptized about 35 of these new believers so far. The old ways of thinking and acting are just like the struggles the Corinthian Church had when Paul left and decided to write back. Mostly, the new believers come from the bottom socio-economic rung of the ladder... we are serving the poor. One year ago, we began to help a family down the street with food because of unemployment. We didn't have any money in our budget for this and the church was pretty small. Well, one family became three and then 8 and now the number is over 70. We still don't have any money, but God, in amazing ways, has provided money from people all over the world. The story is told and repeated and money comes in. Don't ask me how or why... it just does. I remind people every week that the "food train" might stop any month, but that it's God's train, so I don't worry about it. These people are not shy. If I ask them if they know that they are

sinners, they all say yes. If I ask them if they know that sinners are destined for Hell, they all say yes. When I tell them that Jesus came to save them, for most of them, this is news that they never heard before. Many respond.

When I hear the missionaries that our church supports, when I go overseas myself, or I read what God is doing in this particular church off the coast of Portugal, I am reminded of Colossians 1:6b: “In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.” (NIV) I want to encourage you to go on a short term missions trip. It is important because often times when we stay in one geographic location, we don’t see with our own eyes what God is doing in His world. When we step out in faith and GO, as Jesus commanded His disciples to do at the end of the Gospels, God truly enlarges our faith and expands our vision of what He can do right here at home. In addition, we get to meet other brothers and sisters in Christ who we will be spending eternity with and hopefully impact other non believers with the Gospel as well. I am so grateful to serve here at FBC and to be among fellow believers who take the Great Commission seriously which reads: “18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” -The Gospel of Matthew 28:18-20

9 “verses” That Aren’t in the Bible Several popular sayings can put biblical literacy to the test. For example, the phrases below aren’t in Scripture — although some come pretty close: • “Money is the root of evil.” (According to 1 Timothy 6:10, “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”) • “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” (The closest teaching to this might be in James 4:8.) • “God helps those who help themselves.” (This proverb originated in ancient Greece, not in Scripture.) • “God moves in mysterious ways.” (A verse kind of like this is Isaiah 55:8.) • “Spare the rod, spoil the child.” (British poet Samuel Butler coined this phrase, which could be a paraphrase of Proverbs 13:24.) • “This, too, shall pass.” (This occurs nowhere in the Bible but has been linked, incorrectly, to King Solomon.) • “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” (St. Augustine originally came up with a version of this phrase.) • “Charity begins at home.” (British theologian John Wycliffe is credited with this saying.) • “God will never give you more than you can bear.” (This seems to be a misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 10:13.)
