The Global Water Pathogen Project
Who is involved
• A global team of scientists led by Pr. Joan B Rose, Chair of Water Research, Michigan State University and Dr. Blanca Jimenez, Director of the Division of Water Sciences, UNESCO have initiated a major project to address pathogens in wastewater and freshwaters world-wide
• A global network of scientists and students will be engaged to gather and build the knowledge on pathogens-potentially more than 120 authors will be employed in the project across the world
The Global Water Pathogen Project
The mission• The mission is to develop a knowledge resource
which can guide future goals for achieving safe waters using advanced information technology to create an open online database, quantitative information, tools and educational materials.
• This project will interface with UNESCO’s goal for updating and disseminating a new edition of Sanitation and Disease: Health Aspects of Excreta and Wasterwater Management (Feachem et al., 1983)
The Global Water Pathogen Project
Goals
• Creating a knowledge community to develop the online Global Water Pathogen Hub
• Create and support a platform for the online resource to build the knowledge on pathogens in water as after 30years new pathogens, new models are available to examine occurrence and persistence
• Focus on pathogens and human health risk
The Global Water Pathogen Project
Goals
• Result in an open access online platform for sharing, retrieving databases, capturing and visualizing all related information on pathogens
• Disseminate the knowledge globally
• Serves as a compendium of information and quantitative data to support risk assessment to protect water safety
The Global Water Pathogen Project
Goals
• AK role is to create the Global Knowledge Hub: develop the technology and delivery platform towards a Water Pathogen Network
omake all information easily accessible, readable and
discoverable oallow content contributionohelp people combine, aggregate, filter and analyse the
informationodevelop community and citizen-science portalsoprovide tools for educational/employment pathwaysoexpand with additional components to further enhance the Hub

Content Analysis
The Global Water Pathogen Project
Content Analysis Map/Analyze its content Provide a more detailed and oriented description of the content Identify all the different data types Define a model that would meet search requirements, easy to follow Contain a complement of information
The Global Water Pathogen Project
Classification and Schema
The Global Water Pathogen Project
30th-31st August Meeting
• Host a small group of key members of GWPP and the virus team, prior to the 4th Food and Environmental Virology conference, September 2-5, 2014, Corfu, Greece.
• A global network of experts from Michigan State University, Washington University, Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research, Brazil Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, International Livestock Research Institute Vietnam, University of Barcelona, University of Patras
The Global Water Pathogen Project
30th-31st August Meeting
The Global Water Pathogen Project
30th-31st August Meeting
• Focus now on the Academic sector and especially on the virus section of the book, each virus will be presented for the occurrence and persistence
• Agreed on the actual headings for the virus section of the book
The Global Water Pathogen Project
30th-31st August Meeting
• Areas to address: Inclusion of global data sets, mapping geographic regions, emerging pathogens
• Produce a newsletter and set up a list serve as internal communication, for follow up and updates
• Discussion on data problems; publication copyrights, data sharing, datasets/ models not publicly available, register all related datasets and projects in one place, no tools to organize their data
The Global Water Pathogen Project
Current Steps
• 1st milestone by December to have an active website, including a finder, for authors to start building the content and to create the online virus chapters by September 2015
• Provide tools for authoring the 2nd version of the Faechem 2.0 book, managing the information and visualizing the results
The Global Water Pathogen Project
Next and Final step
• Finally, to have a Knowledge Hub which will: o gather all the relevant pathogen resources,
integrate and connect to existing and external websites (QMRA wiki, WHO, Great Lakes etc.)
o create a knowledge sharing system and supportive science and educational network
o provide an accessible global information to support action and change for protecting human health
Parallel Activities
• ECVET-STEP D2.1 Deliverable Section 2a
(Strengthening Training to Employment Pathway)
• Meetings, Trainings&Seminars
