The municipality
Kalamaria (The good side)Kalamaria (The good side)
The municipality of Kalamaria is located in the East and South East
part of the city of Thessaloniki. Kalamaria was one of the gates of the walls surrounding Thessaloniki
in old times and the name is possibly a paraphrase of the term
kali meria (the good side).
It was in 1943 that the Municipality was first founded.
It covers a total extent of 7.200.000 sq.m. and it has a population of about 100.000 people. It is considered as the second largest Municipality in
polulation after the one of Thessaloniki, and most of the
place is perimetrically surrounded by the sea.
Kalamaria (The good side)Kalamaria (The good side)
The inhabitants are mainly refugees from the areas of
Caucasus, the Black sea, Asia Minor, Consatantinople and
Eastern Thrace. The Municipality is divided in ten
regions and some of them have names of the unforgettable
Homeland (New Trapezous, Karabournaki, Aretsou,
Byzantium).
Kalamaria (The good side)Kalamaria (The good side)
The commercial spirit, the creativity and the culture of the first refugees - inhabitants, the fame of the place as a
place fo recreation and excursions greatly influenced the economic
development of the whole area. At the same time there is an extensive
cultural and social development in the area with the activities of local
cultural and social institutions but mainly with the activities and
initiatives of the cultural centre of the Municipality.
