• Brod means watering place • First mention in 1234 as village near silver mines

(founded by Smil from Lichtenburk)• Originally Německý Brod, 5. 5. 1945 renamed• Capital city of the district, 20 km away from

Jihlava• 25 000 inhabitants • Partnership with Brixen (Austria), Brielle

(Netherlands) a Spišská Nová Ves (Slovakia)

System of education

• Compulsory since 1774• Three levels• Basic education (6-15 yrs) – basic school,

grammar school (lower), conservatory, special school

• Medium education (15-19 yrs) – grammar school, high school (both leaving examination) training college (vocational certificate)

• High education (19 - ?) – college (DiS.), university (Mgr., Ing., Bc. + post graduade PhD. Etc.)
