The Concept- The Need and The Process Message from the Hon'ble CM Sir

Management is an art or the science- since aeons has enabled best of human minds to reach and challenge the conscious conclusion, a conclusion which will not hit and arise the cognitive dissonance among the self. But this debate has taken the management education to newer heights and never explored places.

The verb manage comes from the Italian maneggiare (to handle - especially tools), which in turn derives from the Latin manus (hand). The French word mesnagement (later ménagement) influenced the development in meaning of the English word management in the 17th and 18th centuries.

At the beginning, one thinks of management functionally, as the action of measuring a quantity on a regular basis and of adjusting some initial plan; or as the actions taken to reach one's intended goal. This applies even in situations where planning does not take place. From this perspective, Henri Fayol (1841–1925) considers management to consist of six functions: forecasting, planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling. He was one of the most influential contributors to modern concepts of management.

Thus management grew across the world as capitalization acted as the oxygen to fuel the much needed research and development in newer land, newer countries. India was no different, and neither has been our state, Chhattisgarh. With just two institutes offering the Management Degree in 2006, now there are almost 25 institutes offering Management education in various domains and fields.

The rise has been phenomenal, but this has been possible also because of the exceptional Industrial growth the state has witnessed over time.

Every year, when thousands of students from the state, battle out to choose the best B-School from the state, the institute gear up to show the best they have to attract the prospective student.

But there is no comprehensive, unbiased report, which talks from the point of view of students, and importantly parents, whose hard earned money is invested for the secured future of the child.

How good are the colleges? what more challenges lies ahead for them, and where they stand viz a viz competition.

This Report serves three purpose

1. For students: It provides them insight about which colleges are the best and what make them unique.

2. For Parents: It acts as window inside the institutes and understand how it can shape their child’s future.

3. For Educationists and Owners: On what students look forward to, and find missing in their exposure while they achieve their formal learning in Management.

this constant debate

Message from the Education Minister Message from the ChairmanGoel Group of Companies

Dear Students,

I feel elated to get this opportunity to address you by this book, -B-School Rating. You, the future managers have a great role to play, as you will be the pioneers whose efforts will shape the state of Chhattisgarh and the country. Management Education has to be practical, for it cannot be limited to the classroom and theory alone, rather, what I will love to see is that you put your best foot and be in the market.

Until and unless, you start from the bottom, your chances of reaching the top diminishes, hence, I emphasize you to get hands on experience in this fiercely competitive world.

You are privileged, that you are exposed to multiple businesses and ideas at young age, and for that you must thank your parents who have ensured that you are getting such highly qualified education.

But what comes as a surprise is even after such high training, very few prefer to start of their own business, and be an entrepreneur. In times to come, I would love to witness that Management education must now empower the young brigade to inculcate the ability to take calculated risk and plunge into the beautiful world of being the Master of their own business thus creating jobs for numerous other, not so privileged students.

This report will surely empower the students, faculties, parents and above all, the Entrepreneurs who have initiated the Management Education in their institutes as the report also highlights what are the key challenges the students are facing in the college and what all they feel is missing.

At the end, I wish you students my best wishes, and look forward to see you reaching new heights.

The future of Management education looks promising in the state. As more and more brands and multinational companies are showing deep inclination in Chhattisgarh state, they will look forward to quality trained work force for their brands. In order to know the most critical and crucial aspect of the Management education, the research team of Zee 24 Ghante, went to more than thousand students- both passed out and currently in the college-and tried to decode what factors they think are missing in their education. Along with this, the Research Team went on to meet Entrepreneurs across the state and tried to understand what they look forward in the a fresh Management graduate, and which skills they will prefer to look in the students coming to join their organization. After getting almost a list of 100 factors, the team after hours of discussion, the team carried out a Qualitative research to come to TOP 15 factors which are the most crucial for the upcoming years.

Placements are a major factor, as around 64% of the students rate the Placements as average and below the optimum mark. The companies and recruiters have a view that the students are not disciplined enough, and are very shallow in their knowledge about the business they choose to join. The Institutes though have a different story to tell. They said, “the students who join our institutes do not come to really learn, but a vast majority of them join the college to get a degree. Even when the colleges try hard to persuade the students, being in a vast majority, they just do minimum of the required task, and never participate in the challenges a faculty wish to provide a professor on request of not disclosing the name said, “You do a conference and you won't get more than 50 students that too after huge efforts and persuasion, and try doing a Dance or Singing competition, you will face serious issue managing the crowd”The result of this is that, Best faculties either loose interest in teaching, or prefer to do some-other stuffs thus adding to this situation.

One probable solution to it is enhancing the course and curriculum with points for external exposure and participation in conferences etc, which will ensure that a students, who are in majority today (who believe college as a place to have fun) will eventually be minimized to minority. But to do this, the Management as well as the Government has to join hands together.

The problem identified here is very serious, and until a well thought plan of action is not made, the situation will continue to get worse.

A 10 point agenda must be released by the government and educational institutes to work towards increasing the average package offered, thus ensuring that the management institutes attract better companies for the students future.

FACTOR 2: FACULTIES

The faculties factor are a very positive aspect revealed by the research, with 74% of the students are happy with the faculties in their colleges 34% believe they have excellent faculties which is very positive aspect, considering the state is only 10 years young.

But when the vast majority of students are not serious about the study, the faculties who are more lenient and give ease of work are considered “Good”, it's worth a discussion how the perception of students of good faculty is formed.

Most of the management colleges have a process of rating the Faculty, repeated every semester.

Usually the Star Faculty is not the one who puts the most of the efforts, but the one who is loved by the majority. Thus this 74% of the happiness has to be taken with a pinch of salt. Also, only couple of colleges reported to have conducted seriously the FDP-Faculty Development Program. The Management of the Institutes must put aside a specific amount so that the faculties are allowed to go and attend the FDP- conducted by various IIM's and top management institutes.

FACTOR 3: VISITNG FACULTIES

The visiting faculties are a cause of concern. Usually management colleges who are termed as best, have a very healthy number of Visiting faculties.

The Number of visiting faculties are less, as 78% of the students feel that the exposure they should get from visiting faculties is way below the mark.

Colleges need to emphasize on getting more Visiting faculties as the students need to be exposed to the practicalities of business.

VISITING FACULTIES

FACTOR 4: EXTRA CURRICULAR

The extracurricular does cause a concern, as more Red marks pop up than the blue ones. The sports facilities, gymnasium, Syllabus, College websites and Canteen are cause of concern whereas more students seem pretty satisfied with the wi-fi facilities, Personality development activity.

College needs to work on certain key issues which are crucial for the growth of the students, and/or which students find important in a college.

Industrial Visits / Exposure

The students are of the view that, the industrial visits are the crucial factor, but the students are not well exposed to these areas.

Only 11% of the students feel that the institute provides them excellent exposure about industrial visits, while a total of 67% (26+15+26) feel its average or below the required minimum.

Institutes must tie up with multiple disciplinary corporate houses to provide enough exposure to the students so that they can better understand the nuances of each industry/domain and make an informed choice about the industry to choose for their career.

FACTOR 7: EFFECTIVEPRESENTATION SKILLS

FACTOR 8: CASE STUDY

The students feel that they must be taught the details of effective presentation. This is necessary because one thing corporates expect from an MBA is an ability to do excellent presentation. The colleges needs to take care and come up with special session on training students to make effective and excellent presentation. When asked to most of the Business personal who offers management student the job, it gets evident that the one major expectation they have from the fresh management student is the ability to frame their product offering in a systematic and framed manner. One of the Entrepreneur said, “ What we want these new comers to be able to present themselves and our organization to other business and our clients. They must be able to process the information we give them, to pitch the prospective clients.

One of the neglected area which is crucial for the students of management is “Case Study”.Although there are colleges who have subscribed to various Journals like, Harvard Business review but these are seldom utilized.More over the case study method is not very accepted norm in colleges, and among students as 73% of the students believe that the college need to train them using Case study method.A student said, “ Case study, provides us the opportunity to peep into the real complex business world, and understand the various nuances of the business under study. What it also does is provide us with exposure from varying industries, and the dynamics of it”. The case study, importantly gives a student the ability to understand various culture and how businesses ethics change with changing cultural diversity.

Group discussions add to the overall knowledge of the students, As they discuss on various issues, concern, the Group discussion not only empowers them with knowledge, but also makes them learn the art of managing people and themselves. It enables them to learn the most crucial ability, the lost art of listening to others view point. Most of the time, management is about developing the skill of active listening, which today’s student seem to have forgotten. They come from backgrounds, varying from commerce to engineering, thus they have been learned to write/speak all that they know and have read. This makes them speak more than necessary, which proves fatal in business world.Group discussion, expects them to speak more in less word, which in itself is very challenging.Colleges need to train the students more and more about handling objections and not being emotional at crunch situations.

All they come with is a bunch of heavy file with multiple resumes, and certificates, but when we test them on job, what continue to surprise is how less they know.”

With soaring media prices, and requirement of businesses to make people aware about their product and services, today’s management student must be well equipped in the art of managing advertisements, and crafting effective communi-cations to target the right consumer psyche.

What also is need of the business is someone who do aware media buying for their business. Most often, Media buying is more of a pitch process, and relation building exercise, without enough consideration about the Return on Investment.

Companies need students who know which media suits their business and which specific time must be selected to rightly convert the prospect into sales, or enhance Brand Recall.

The surprise entry which almost 64% of the students wish is to learn about the E-Marketing as a subject. With Internet coming up big time, the next business revolution is sure to come from Internet world, and so the students look forward to sessions on E-Marketing.

The various Jargons, which they learn and hear, like SEO- Search Engine Optimization, The Meta tag etc etc, does make their mind fill with questions.

Being most of the time, online in facebook and other social networking sites, they themselves learn and be part of most of the marketing campaigns, thus their awareness about this media is usually more than other medium. The way google earns money, Pay per Click Model, Key word search, etc etc, are all those words which make their young brain tick with ideas

FACTOR 15: Mobile Advertisements

FACTOR 14:Negotiation Skills

Creativity is the necessity of today’s market, and as more and more business are realizing that the market is highly cluttered, they rely heavily on creativity to tap and tick the attention of their consumers.

Students knowledge about various color schemes, branding ethics, soft wares like Corel draw, photoshop, adobe aftereffects, etc which are used for ad creation, becomes the need of the hour.

Understanding the basics will empower them to deal with their agency, and guide them better.

63% of the students were of the view that, Creative Ad designing will empower them to understand not only their brands, but also their competitors way of branding.

Negotiation is a soft skill, but its as hard as a skill could be to learn. Best of the MBA institutes across the globes are realizing the importance of effective negotiation, and also the value of employee who has an eye for detail.

More than 52% of the student felt that Negotiation and persuasion will help them enormously.

Institutes must organize sessions on Negotiation and Persuasion, for the students by calling various diplomats and industry experts, who can deliver them sessions on this tough yet interesting skill set.

Rest assured that with this skill in students quiver, they will surely have the power to win great battles.

Mobile is one medium which has changed the way our whole human race used to live.

With Mobile being an extended body part, something today’s customer can’t think without, it provides the business another interesting medium to reach the target audience and more cheaply.

If we talk about SMS marketing, today, an sms cost around 1 paisa and that too is highly personalized in nature.

With various new innovations slated to come up, with 3G and latest smart phones, this is the next medium our market is set to shift, and every business is eyeing on it.

57% of the students felt that they must know the various tips and tricks of this medium, in order to better develop the business they choose to be.

Every research has its own life, as the idea germinate to become a seed, and then transform into a plant, which after enough resistance from the atmosphere and the weeds, eventually stands as a tree.

This research project was no exception. The project started around 45 days back, when the issues and concerns of management students began to surface, and they battle out to choose the Management colleges.

The team at Zee 24 Ghante CG, who are always ready to take on new challenges, decided to reach more than 20+ colleges, and to accumulate the views from more than 1000+ students. In order to do so, the team chalked a complete research plan.

For the first week, a qualitative research was conducted to lay down the parameters and understand the nuances to be followed in the research.

Once the qualitative research was completed, the team decided to go ahead in two roads, one lead to sending a duly crafted form to all the Management colleges in order to get the required information.

The second team worked endlessly to reach the 1000+ students from various management colleges across the state, and collected their views in another form crafted for students.

A 16 member team, worked day in and day out to collect response, and utilized the new media to collect the required data from students of different colleges. The dedicated team, collected the data, collated it and analyzed it day in and day out to bring this quality book in your hand.

Where we expected that students will be hard to cooperate, and we will get the data from colleges happily, it so happened that the things started going vice versa.

As management colleges became less and less cooperative, what kept the team moving was excellent response from the audience for whom the report is meant to be- The Students and parents.

Facebook- and other social media sites were filled with great comments, appreciating the hard work the team was putting up, and expressed their desire to know the findings as soon as possible.

The ranking of colleges are chosen based on response collected and the information they have provided in their official website during the time of the research. Also the various parameters on which ranking have been given are: Infrastructure available, the faculty member's qualification, the Approval from recognized Universities, thePlacements statistics etc.

We humbly thank the colleges who have keenly provided information, and also thank colleges who have actually gone ahead, to not provide us with the information. At least, now the students might stand at the point where they know for sure, what not to choose.
