The Lincoln Ostomy Association supports ostomates of all ages including adolescents living with bowel and blad-der conditions. A National Youth Rally Medical Team is a mixture of WOCNs (wound

ostomy continence nurses) and other licensed medical professionals who host young campers for fun, self confidence and education regarding their conditions. Some volunteers were campers who now promote optimal health and

self-management throughout the week. The 2018 rally takes place July 16-21 in Boulder, Colorado. Contact Mary Beth at: [email protected] April Gimlen at: 510-769-9295 or visit www.youthrally.org

Positive benefits Anything that fires feelings of joy and contentment leads to positive thinking and that improves health. A study, by the Journal of Research in Personality, exam-ined 90 students who were placed into two groups. The first group wrote about a very positive experience each day for three consecutive days. The second group wrote about a control topic. Three months later, students who wrote about positive experiences had better mood levels, fewer visits to the health center and experienced fewer illnesses. Research from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2001 says optimism is linked to lowered risk of heart disease in older men and University of Pittsburgh researchers report that optimistic women have less thickening of the carotid artery walls. A 2009 Women’s Health Initiative Study for the American Heart Association journal suggests that a posi-

tive mental outlook is associated with reduced evidence of coronary heart dis-ease and total mor-tality in post-meno-pausal women. In 2000, Mayo Clinic researcher Toshihiko Maruta, M.D., published a 30-year study of 839 patients, indicating a pessimistic view was a risk factor for early death, with a 19 percent increase in the risk of mortality. Even after adjusting for age and gender, pessimists had a higher mortality rate than those who tested as optimistic.

According to a panel held by ostomy products manufactur-er Hollister, over 50 percent of all convexity-wearing osto-mates would benefit from, or need to wear, an ostomy belt. These belts help maintain an even pressure over the peri-stomal skin, and for some patients they can be used to enhance the convex effect by applying more pressure than achieved when wearing the flange without a belt. They can also help hold the flange in place on flaccid abdomens, or those ostomates whose stomas are located within a skin fold.

INDIGESTIVE DISEASE

ADVOCATE study shows reduced skin damage

Several studies have shown that Crohn’s disease is becoming more common in children and adults in the United States. In 2004-2005, 43 children and 214 adults per 100,000 people had Crohn’s disease and 27 children and 235 adults per 100,000 people had ulcerative colitis. In 2008-2009, these estimates rose to 48 children and 236 adults per 100,000 people for Crohn’s disease and 29 children and 248 adults per 100,000 people for ulcerative colitis. According to the United Ostomy Association, more than 450,000 people in the U.S. have a stoma (ostomy) and nearly 120,000 new ostomy surgeries are performed each year. The average age of those with an ostomy is 68 years old, but ostomates range in age from infants to the elderly. All require pre- and post-surgery support, education and coun-seling after their surgeries. This is where a specially-trained wound, ostomy and continence nurse is essential.

Is IBD becoming more common?

Comfort, convexity and skin issues all come to mind for ostomates when choosing a brand of product. While the Lincoln Ostomy Association does not advocate for any particular product, we constantly look for product updates so members can make the best choice. Hollister recently pub-lished a study called, “ADVO-CATE,” in which 153 adults from 25 locations in the U.S., Canada and Europe, were seen between March 2015 and January 2017. The study compared Hollister CeraPlus (which includes ceremides) skin barrier against products without ceremides to compare costs and the occurrence of peristomal skin compli-cations. According to Hollister, “CeraPlus skin barrier users in the ADVOCATE

study experienced a clinically mean-ingful reduction in the occurrence of peristomal skin complications (PSCs) and PSCs were significantly more likely to resolve in a 4-week period with the use of CeraPlus skin barri-ers. Individuals using CeraPlus skin barriers experienced a 26.9 percent relative reduction in PSCs in compar-ison to those using Hollister Ostomy

Care non-ceramide barriers, although the difference was not statistically significant. Significantly more partici-pants were ‘very satisfied’ with the overall barrier performance as compared to the Hollister Ostomy Care non-ceramide barrier control group” The ADVOCATE study demonstrated a cost savings utilizing CeraPlus skin barriers over the 12-week period, as compared

to the Hollister Ostomy Care non-ce-ramide control group. The use of CeraPlus skin barriers resulted in a 14 percent relative reduction in stoma-re-lated cost of care (supplies and select accessories, topical treatments and healthcare visits) on costs of stoma care and occurrence of PSCs.

LOA goes high-tech for national expert The Lincoln Ostomy Association welcomed a national ostomy advocate, Laura Cox, from Shield Health Care for it’s January meeting via a confer-ence link provided by Bryan Health. Cox provided information on her story as a young ostomate. She discussed everything from attitude to products. She opened the floor to LOA members to collect feedback. Cox travels the country connecting osto-mates and brought some best practices for ostomy groups. Cox said her experience as an os-tomate also prompts training at Shield Health Care. “At Shield, we had our customer service people wear a pouch for sever-al days,” she said. “They were enlight-ened to what we get to do all the time.

I was really pleased to see how they all reacted.” Shield Health Care has been a great support to the LOA in 2017 sponsoring the Sparrow twice and bringing extra education to members through articles and videos featuring Lau-ra Cox. One video covers a wide array of topics that would be handy for new and veteran ostomates. The video is also available at ostomy-nebraska.com/lincoln. Fourteen points that Laura addresses are: leaks; noise;

dressing; body image; going out in public; sports, leisure and other activi-ties; friends; dating and sex; sleeping; odor; hydration and travel.

Dwight Eisen-hower was the 34th president of the U.S. He was a five-star general who led the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. He was also known for easing Cold War tensions, launching the Space Race and creating the Federal Interstate Highway System. While many people were aware of his health issues, not many peo-ple knew that “Ike” also had an ostomy. In May 1956 – halfway through his 8-year presidency – Eisenhower was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. His doctor performed a per-manent ileotransverse colostomy to remove a bowel obstruction. Five days after surgery, he resumed conducting official business.

While many ostomates may not consider themselves disabled, they are protected under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act against employment-based dis-crimination in the workplace. Some employers, not familiar with ostomy surgery, may react negatively or treat ostomates differently. Individuals who feel they have been discriminated against due to their ostomy or continent surgery, or due to certain needs result-ing from surgery, should not be embarrassed or reluctant to rely on the protections offered under the ADA.

Sam walks into his boss’s office. “Sir, I’ll be straight with you, I know the economy isn’t great, but I have three companies after me,

and I would like to respectfully ask for a raise.” After a few minutes of haggling the boss finally agrees to a 5 percent raise, and Sam happily gets up to leave. “By the way,” asks the boss as Sam is getting up, “which three companies are after you?” “The electric compa-ny, water company and phone company,” Sam replied.

“I’m happy to see you too!”
