Principal’s Report Open Day – Grade 6 2020 Information

On Monday we held an Open Day and then followed this up with a Parent Information session for

potential students in Year 7 in 2020. During the afternoon three groups of Grade 6 students, and

one of parents, were taken on guided tours of the College conducted by our Year 10 Further Hu-

manities class. These students did a great job, as both tour guides and ambassadors for our College

and the feedback from parents and students on the tours was very positive. At the end of the

school day, the Grade 6 students were all taken up to the Stadium where they took part in some

games which helped the students from St. Patricks and the Primary School to get to know each oth-

er a bit better. Following the Stadium, students came back to the College and were joined by their

parents for a quick sausage in bread, and then an information session focussing on what we offer as

a College and some more specific information about Year 7 and the new transition program we are

developing. Parents were then taken on a tour of the College and then it was open for any ques-

tions and a look at the uniform, which was kindly brought up and presented by Marg Batters from

RamJac. Overall, it was a really positive day. Thanks to everyone for coming, both St. Patricks and

the Primary School for their support and to the staff and students who made it all possible.

Year 9 Enviro Week

All Year 9 students have been involved in Enviro Week this week. This has involved a great deal of

tree planting, an overnight camp and a reward day on Friday. Early reports from the week have

been really positive, with students getting in and having a go at all tasks put in front of them. While

this program is clearly focussed on improving our environment by planting trees in systematic and

planned way, it also marries very nicely with our work on the Resilience Project. Gratitude, Empathy

and Mindfulness are the three key pillars of the Resilience Project. Empathy is all about giving back

and doing something for someone or something else. Clearly the student work in planting these

trees is ‘giving back’ to the community. Well done to all students involved and also to the number

of staff involved to make this week such a success.

Energy Breakthrough

At the last meeting of College Council, it was decided to invest in another new car for the Energy

Breakthrough. While it was always a plan to upgrade both vehicles at some point, changes on the

Occupational Health and Safety regulations require all wheels to be internal to the vehicle. Our two

older vehicles do not meet this standard and could not easily be modified to become compliant, so

the dilemma was – do we only enter one vehicle, or do we invest to maintain two vehicles in the

competition? I am very pleased the latter was the decision made. We now look forward to the

new car arriving and the inevitable back and forth over who will be in which car!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Expressions of interest are still open for the October 16 performance of Charlie and the Chocolate

Factory, with the cost of the ticket and travel only being $90. At this stage, we have a number of

tickets left and if all of our tickets are not used up, they will be offered to students from the Primary

School who are currently on a waiting list.

Senior Boys State Squash

On Thursday the 25th of July, Jake Male, Mitch Birthisel and Vincent Saies

travelled to Melbourne to compete in the State Squash Championships. This year

20 schools had entered across Victoria in the Senior Boys category. St. Arnaud

finished at the top of their pool, beating Melbourne High, Haileybury College

(which has over 5000 students) and McKinnon College to progress to the semi-

final. Unfortunately we went down to Sunraysia, which then put us in a play-off

for third against Balwyn High, winning the match.

A special mention to Jake, Mitch and Vincent, who have represented the school at

this level for the past 6 years and have achieved some fantastic results:

2014 – State Squash Champions

2015 – 2 teams, State Squash

Champions

2016 – 2 teams, State Squash

Champions and Runners Up

2017 – State Squash Champions

2018 – Runners Up

2019 – Third

St. Arnaud Secondary College students Riley Burke, Ethan McIntyre, Alec Freeman, Brandon Leigh, Jakob Hicks and Cooper Baldock, (in Years 10 to 12) participated in the White Card program ran by All Skills Services. The intensive program ran from 8.30 in the morning until approximately 4.00 in the afternoon. A white card is sometimes necessary for:

Construction labourers

Tradespeople

Site managers

Supervisors

Surveyors

People who access operational construction zones unaccompanied or unsupervised or

Workers who routinely enter operational construction zones

Prior to the instruction day they all had to complete some pre-course reading and answer 50 or so questions – this was quite a task. On our instruction day they were greeted by Dale Gollop, the head instructor, and Wanda, his assistant from All Skill Services. David taught them about various workplaces and the different safety aspects they need to be aware of. As well as the dangers in the workplace, they learnt about various regulations that both the employer and employee need to abide by. They also learnt why it is important to follow the rules in a workplace. So, they all now know how to:

Identify a safety hazard

Report a safety issue on a worksite

Understand what measures should be taken to reduce the risk of accident or injury and

Correctly respond to a workplace health and safety incident

Near the conclusion to the day they had to sit and complete a white card exam. Thankfully, they all passed and now have our WHITE CARD certificates – thus they are now able to be approved to work on a construction sites. Student Comments Included:

“The whole experience was great. Heaps of useful information. Very happy Dale ran the course. He is a very wise and

intelligent man.”

“It was a really good course and I’m glad I have done it. Throughout the course, I have learnt a lot.”

“Very good lot. Dale definitely knows what he is talking about, and goes into great depth.”

“I found the course educational and easy to understand.”

“I found the course to be very interesting. Gathering all the info and knowing more about OHS and what the employers and

employees do. The demonstrations shown were great and very helpful.”

“It was very educational. There was lots of variety and that some hazards are more complex. For example, most people

would think if there was any type of fire, you use a water fire extinguisher, but no, electrical fires need CO2. So it was very

good.”

Careers and Pathways

VCAL, VCE AND VET – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

This time of year, you will hear a lot of discussion about VCAL, VCE and VET Subject selection, especially if you are a Year 10 student, or the parent of a Year 10 student. So, what are VCAL, VCE and VET and where can they lead you? Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) – is a senior secondary certificate (Year 11 and 12) that provides you with practical work experience as well as literacy and numeracy skills that are important for life and work. The VCAL is typically more hands-on than the VCE. A VET/Practical Subject is an essential requirement of the VCAL. Career pathways can include: Apprenticeships/Traineeships, TAFE studies, Full/part time work, University (through a pathway option first). Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) – is a senior secondary certificate (Year 11 and 12) that can provide career pathways to: Tertiary education (University), Advanced certificate courses (TAFE), the workforce etc. The VCE is typically more academic than the VCAL. Vocational Education & Training (VET) courses – are nationally recognised TAFE certificates that can be studied as a part of the VCE or VCAL. There are a wide variety of industries you can explore through VET. The majority of VET subjects studied by St Arnaud Secondary College students are undertaken at the Charlton Trade Training Centre. Studies offered: Health Services, Agriculture, Automotive, Beauty Services, Building and Construction, Community Services, Engineering, Hairdressing (Salon Assistant), Hospitality, Animal Studies, Music, and Sport and recreation.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE Note the date on your calendar and get

organised!

16thto 21st September - last week of Term 3

All Year 10’s are expected to organise their own work

experience during the week of 16th to 21st September. If it is

not possible during this week, then work experience could be

organised during the following two weeks in the holiday period.

We encourage students to search for a much wider experience than their

regular workplace, if they have one, and hope this opportunity allows them to

encounter a workplace that a student may otherwise not have the opportunity

to experience. Dream big!
