School Council Elections

Nominations for positions on School Council closed last Thursday. At the close we had

two nominations for Parent Representatives, Catriona Thoolen and Meagan Ferguson. As

the number of nominees is less than the three vacant positions, I am able to declare that

both Meagan and Catriona are duly elected. The same for the staff positions with nomina-

tions received from Anthony Briggs and Colin Macgowan. As the number of nominees is

equal to the number of positions I can also declare that Anthony and Colin are duly elect-

ed. I would like to both thank and congratulate all four members of council who have re-

nominated this year and look forward to working closely with them, and all returning

members of council over the next year. The first meeting of the new council is next

Wednesday, March 15.

Weekly Newsletter

After some discussion, we have decided to have the newsletter return to a weekly format.

This will allow the timely dissemination of information and should also make each news-

letter not so ‘bulky’. Any feedback on this, or on the newsletter in general is always wel-

come.

Investiture Day

Last Friday we held our annual Investiture Day where we recognise and present our stu-

dent leaders to the school community. Being my first ceremony, I was impressed with the

manner in which all students listened and participated during the service. I am also sure

that we have a strong student leadership group and I am sure they will be able to come up

with good ideas, suggestions and plans to help move our school forward.

Interim Reports

Staff are working on compiling interim reports on every student at the College. These re-

ports aim to give a snapshot of how the year is progressing so far and where necessary,

provide a good basis for conversations at the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews on

Wednesday 22 March.

Avalon Air Show

Last Friday 10 students travelled to the Avalon Air Show to spend the day looking at pos-

sible career pathways and of course, checking out the planes that were on display, both on

the ground and in the air. All reports have been very positive. Thanks to Mr Reynolds for

his organisation of the event.

NUTRITION & WELLBEING

Be Prepared Make it family policy to always have a piece of active equipment on hand, rather than relying on technology

such as smart phones to keep them entertained. Keep balls, bats, kites, frisbees or skateboards in the car or

your handbag (try a tennis ball!) so they get used to exercising in their free time.

Not sure what to give the kids for lunch? Looking for simple easy to prepare ideas?

You don’t have to spend hours in the kitchen to give your kids a delicious healthy

lunch they will want to eat.

As part of the student Year 9 Art course, students have been explor-ing the medi-um of 'Watercolour'. They have been develop-ing their tech-niques throughout the term and have pro-duced some excellent works of Art. Images are of A3 size by students of 9A.

STASC YEAR 7 – 10 PHYSICAL

EDUCATION

Physical Education at St Arnaud Secondary

College has made a flying start to the year with

the first 4 weeks utilising the local pool for our

lessons. Year 7 and 8 have been focusing on

increasing student confidence in the water by

participating in stroke

development activities

and minor games. The

focus of the Year 9

swimming program was around water safety and

lifesaving skills, with students having to complete a

number of activities including different types of

rescues, lifejacket tasks, fully clothed swims. They

also practised completing a spinal roll and how to

safely put someone on

a spinal board. Year 10

has participated in a

team building raft activity and have completed a

mini triathlon with Charlie Ferguson being

crowned the winner. Many thanks go to past

students India Griffith, Zoey Torney, Katie

Hamilton, Belinda Burke, Ashlee Flanagan and

Jessie Meagher for assisting with these lessons

Students have also undertaken their bi-annual fitness testing which tracks their

progress over four years, testing a number of different areas including muscular

power, aerobic endurance, speed and hand-eye coordination. A real talking point

of the testing, other than the famous (or infamous) ’Beep Test’, is looking back

to see how much students have grown from year to year. The curriculum moves

towards Athletics, in preparation for the upcoming athletics carnival.

1. WHERE TO FOR JOBS? We all hear about

loss of jobs, the changing employment scene, part time work, underemployment, jobs of the future. Obviously the future job situation is very hard to predict, but clearly, young people of today face tough

decisions and an uncertain future regarding their study and career options. In this regard, you might be interested to read some of Jan Owen’s thoughts in the publication The New Work Order: Ensuring young Australians have skills and experience for jobs of the future, not the past, at http://www.fya.org.au/2015/08/23/media-release-young-people-hardest-hit-by-new-work-order/. She believes that there will be three key economic drivers – automation, globalisation and collaboration. It makes for interesting, if concerning reading, with young people facing career/employment options entirely different from many of the older generations.

2. SOME OPEN DAY DATES FOR 2017 – These dates are supplied now for your diaries so you don’t double book activities on these days. Attendance at Open Days is vital for senior

school students. They are especially important

for courses which involve a folio presentation, an interview, an audition or completion of some type of information kit as part of the application process (eg many art, design, drama and music courses). You need to see the facilities, go to an information session, talk to staff/students, and compare institutions.

3. SWINBURNE NEWS - Swinburne is both a

university and a TAFE provider. Its main campus is in Hawthorn, right by Glenferrie station. It also has campuses in Croydon and Wantirna. It offers courses from Certificates through to Doctorates.

GROWTH - Swinburne experienced a 15% increase in first preference applications for courses for 2017 over the previous year. There was also a 5% increase in offers of places at Swinburne. This was

despite an overall fall in offers in Victoria of 6%. Health Sciences experienced the greatest increase of 117% over the last year. Design achieved an 18% increase, Computer Sciences/ICT increased by 16%, Business by 15% and Media and Communications by 13%.

SCHOLARSHIPS - From 2017 onwards, scholarships of $5,000pa will be automatically offered to Swinburne applicants who receive an ATAR of 95 or more (no

separate application required). Various grants are also available (apply direct to Swinburne). In addition, the High Achievers Program (HAP) will provide students receiving an ATAR of 95 or more with mentors, a personalised program, projects, and one-on-one assistance.

NEW COURSES AT SWINBURNE IN 2017 will be the Bachelor of Nursing (with a technology focus) and the Bachelor of Engineering Practice. There will also be a Diploma of Advanced Technologies.

Swinburne is commencing an EARLY LEADERS PROGRAM. The ELP provides secondary students with opportunities to build and document their individual strengths and interests. The program identifies students who show enthusiasm and

achievement in areas outside their secondary studies, including volunteer work, club or society participation, school projects and career exploration. By documenting and reflecting on their skills and achievements, students will create a valuable

resource with certified credentials from Swinburne for use in applications for employment, further study or other pursuits. Part of the reason for this program is that students are individuals with individual talents that may not be recognised by the ATAR system. NOTE: It is not an early offer program. The program is aimed at students in Year 11. Register interest at: http://www.swinburne.edu.au/early-leaders.

Swinburne is now offering a Masters degree in OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, and from 2018 – 2020 will introduce Masters degrees in PHYSIOTHERAPY, DIETETICS and SPEECH PATHOLOGY.

1. LA TROBE UNIVERSITY NEWS – La Trobe’s

main campus is located at Bundoora (Melbourne), and has campuses in Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton and Mildura. La Trobe turns 50 this year!

‘EXPERIENCE LA TROBE’ – How can you find out about studying at La Trobe university? Experience La Trobe provides an opportunity to attend

workshops, lectures, and seminars whilst being exposed to areas of the university not usually available on Open Day. You’ll be able to talk to current academics and

students to find out what their dream career is really like. Parents can attend the parents’ session if they wish covering topics like university costs, courses and admissions. When: Melbourne:

ASPIRE – La Trobe has offered the ASPIRE program for three years now. ASPIRE students have shown a significant commitment to their community through volunteerism, service and leadership. As a result of this, ASPIRE students are able to access a place at La Trobe on a significantly lower ATAR than otherwise required. Many employers indicate that volunteer experience gives candidates an advantage, and ASPIRE students are leading the way in employability. More information on applications for 2018 later.

2. WILLIAM ANGLISS INSTITUTE – William

Angliss Institute is a specialist centre for food, tourism, hospitality and events careers. Located in La Trobe Street Melbourne, it offers modern training facilities, a training restaurant, demonstration kitchens and a wide range of courses from certificates to degrees.

Applications are now open for CERT III in AVIATION (crew), starting in April. The course in for full-time study only and program runs from April to September. Ally direct to William Angliss at www.angliss.edu.au. NOTE: airlines provide

their own training as well.

The William Angliss Skills and Jobs Centre will be holding an industry insight into the travel and tourism industry, designed for those interested in pursuing a tourism career who would like to

gain knowledge of the industry. When: 4pm, Thurs 16 Mar; Where: William Angliss Institute, 555 La Trobe St, Melbourne. Register on the William Angliss website.

The Institute is conducting School Holiday Programs in April, July and September. These will involve hands-on activities in one specialist area, a campus tour, catered lunch and course information session. The April session will be on Thurs 13 April. Book on-line.

Students in Years 7 to 10 will be taking part in the Stars School Challenge on Friday 17th

March 2017. The One Million Stars to End Violence project invites schools to pledge to

weave stars on the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.

Each star woven as part of the Stars Schools Challenge represents the school’s commit-

ment towards a bullying and violence free environment.

The Stars will be sent to the Gold Coast for the 2018 Commonwealth Games where a

striking one million stars will be displayed.

To help us with this project we welcome any donations of old wrapping paper or glossy

magazines which can be brought to school and given to Mrs Chapman.
