Task: Read the quotation in the centre of the explosion, and analyse the meaning of the question as well as how the writer has used language. Use the sentence starters to help you push yourself. The quote is taken from an extract of the novel The Revenant by Michael Punke set in 1823. After crawling for two hundred miles, Hugh Glass arrives at a cabin in the mountains where he seeks the two men (John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger) that stole his possessions and left him to die after he was wounded in a bear attack.

I was not alone. The room was the same, unchanged in any way since I came into it. But at that instant another sensation swept through me as quick as lightening. I was conscious of the presence of the Count and of his being as if lapped in a storm of fury. As my eyes opened involuntarily I saw his strong hand grasp the slender neck of the fair woman and with giant’s power draw it back, and the fair cheeks blazing red with passion. But the Count! Never did I imagine such wrath and fury even in the demons of the pit.

Week 3 Reading This extract is from the beginning of ‘The Woman in Black’ by Susan Hill. It is the early 1900s and Arthur Kipps is starting a journey from London to go to Eel Marsh House and attend the funeral of Mrs Drablow.

Task how does the writer use language to describe the fog in this extract? Complete the boxes below using quotations from the text.

I can IDENTIFY the techniques used in the text

I can select a QUOTE that support my statement

I can EXPLAIN what the quote means

I can ANALYSE the language used & the effect it would have on the reader

The writer describes the fog by using personification. The writer presents the fog as a controlling force.

‘for the fog had scarcely allowed any daylight to penetrate the foul gloom of the atmosphere.’

The writer suggests that the fog is powerful and will not let any light shine through.

The use of the adverb ‘scarcely’ shows that the fog is controlling what is happening within the setting. Furthermore, the use of the adjective ‘foul’ shows the negativity of the fog, creating a sombre and eerie atmosphere.

It was a Monday afternoon in November and already growing dark, not because of the lateness of the hour - it was barely three o’clock - but because of the fog, the thickest of London pea-soupers, which had hemmed us in on all sides since dawn – if, indeed, there had been a dawn, for the fog had scarcely allowed any daylight to penetrate the foul gloom of the atmosphere.

Fog was outdoors, hanging over the river, creeping in and out of alleyways and passages, swirling thickly between the bare trees of all the parks and gardens of the city, and indoors, too, seething through cracks and

“Pain and panic struck together. The woman threw her head back and

screamed a guttural cry of terror.”

Week 6 Reading

How does the writer use language to describe the weather and its effect on London and its inhabitants?

You could include the writer’s choice of:

• Words and phrases

• Language features and techniques

• Sentence forms (8 marks)

The writer describes the weather as __________________________________. For example the phrase/words “___________________________________________-______”, implies/suggests ________________________________________________________-_______________________ because __________________________________________________________. In particular, the use of _________________________________________ (LANGUAGE FEATURE) “_____________________” adds a sense of…/makes it seem…/creates an image of… because ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Task: try to identify and label as many verbs and adverbs as you can that you could write about:

Covering, smothering, blanketing —the fog blinded London and its confused inhabitants. Silently, the grey invader crept into the city and filled its streets. Early morning travellers left warm, orange-lit living rooms (with reluctance!) to be met at their doors by a cold, grey, damp covering of…nothing. How do you dress for such weather?

Verb--doing words: run, stare, shake

Adverb—slowly, quickly, hungrily

They tracked out towards a shellhole, the sun bright, a lark above them. Blue sky, unseen by eyes trained on turned mud. They moved low towards a mine crater where bodies had lain for weeks uncollected. ‘Try to lift him.’ No sound of machine guns or snipers, though their ears were braced for noise. ‘Take his arms.’ The incomprehensible order through the gas mouthpiece. The arms came away softly. ‘Not like that, not take his arms away’. On Weir’s collar a large rat, trailing something red down his back. A crow disturbed, lifting its black body up suddenly, battering the air with its big wings. Coker, Barlow shaking their heads under the assault of risen flies coming up, transforming black skin of corpses into green by their absence. The roaring of Goddard’s vomit made them laugh, snoring private mirth inside their masks. Goddard, releasing his mask, breathed in worse air than he had expelled. Weir’s hands in double sandbags stretched out tentatively to a sapper’s uniform, undressing the chest in search of a disc which he removed, bringing skin with it into his tunic pocket. Jack’s recoil; even through coarse material, to the sponge of flesh. Bright and sleek on liver, a rat emerged from the abdomen; it levered and flopped fatly over the ribs, glutted with pleasure. Bit by bit on to stretchers, what flesh fell left in mud. Not men, but flies and flesh, thought Stephen. Brennan anxiously stripping a torso with no head. He clasped it with both hands, dragged legless up from the crater, his 32 fingers vanishing into buttered green flesh. It was his brother.
