Home Gardens Week of March 30 to April 3. Cooking Week This week we will be learning about cooking. We will be discussing things the students would like to make this week and why they want to make them. We are working on cooking experiences and the children will learn how to make some different items. On Monday, the children will be making salsa and tortilla chips. On Tuesday, the children will draw or make 3-dimensional art about cooking. On Wednesday we will be making ices. On Thursday we will make a fruit salad and spend time outside playing with the balls and the bike. As well with the water paint, chalk, pencils, crayons musical chairs, jump ropes. We will do team building activities as well like the sack races, bike races and picture taking. On Friday we will discuss what was important to the students this week and they will write about it.

On Friday, we made our own pizzas. The children were able to choose their own toppings and then create their own pizza. As the children were putting the toppings on their pizza, the staff were talking to the children and asking them how many items they were putting on their pizza. This was one of the goals for this activity, to count out the objects they put on their pizza.

This week Ms. Irene’s class is moving on to our next theme topic, which are clothes. The first week, we will be exploring what we know about clothes. We will be looking at different types of clothing in magazine as well as our

City Park classmates. We will look at clothes from other cultures. We will add different types of clothes in the dramatic play area.

Ms. Bousha’s Class is doing exercise for another week. They will be doing exercises to a variety of music. They will also be doing a variety of creative art activities as well.

Homework help Monday-Friday Tutoring Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s from 3:30-4:30pm

The Teens will be making melted crayon Art, Mosaic design on mirror frame art, magazine collage, Duct tape wallets, friendship Bracelets and to end our fun week we will be having fun with the Just dance competition and a fun game of Apples to apples and Head bands and Team Charades.

Main Y Pre- School Part Day, Full Time and Calvert: Our March theme about “Ball and Games” are almost over. This past month

was full of excitement and physical activities. The children got to play all kinds of games and share what their favorite sport was.

Our theme for the month of April will be ‘trees and Nature.’ What we would like to do, is promote an understanding and acceptance of investigation of nature and how plants grow. We will be asking the parents for plants and dirt for out planting activities that will start mid-April.

We will continue to practice our Handwriting skills and learn our names as part of our curriculum. Our Main Y facility is a wonderful and fun program which encompasses writing, literacy and math. For all our children we use all of the manipulative such as Mat Man, roll a dough, stamp and see screen, etc.

School Age: It’s SPRING!! The children are out on Spring break this week and we are celebrating with games, crafts, and lots of science experiments!! We are experimenting with Eggs and we are wondering and

Theme: All about Spring

This month we will research different things, animals, and events about spring.

First week we will talk with the children about rabbits, why they live underground, what they eat, if they are herbivores or mammals, how many species, and if they are endangered.

We are researching why the bunny is related to spring. When, where, and who started to paint and exchange spring eggs.

For Literacy we will have the story: THE RABBITS EARS

Crafts: Children will make a construction paper bunny mask, ears hat, and a bunny. Friday we will die boiled eggs and decorate spring baskets.

Harada

asking the question, “ IS it possible to dissolve a… Peep?” You will be surprised at the answer! We will be making predictions, bar graphs and discussing everything that we are working on. We are also continuing with our reading challenge and incorporating spring themed books. Safety is our first concern: Please read your parent information booklet and follow the safety rules when bringing in or picking up your child. A special safety concern of ours is the shoes your child wears to school. We walk the stairs, run and climb in the gym and ride tricycles and climb outside so we need shoes that fasten

snuggly onto your children’s feet. Please no flip flops. If your child doesn’t have appropriate shoes he/she will not be able to participate fully in our activities.

Toddler - During the week of March 30th to

April 3rd, we will be exploring colors. Some exploring with food coloring and creating tissue paper collages. We will work with markers and finish our week with a tie dye activity.

Preschool - The children in Preschool 1 will continue their study on buildings. This week they will focus on what types of buildings are in their neighborhood explain the sizes, shapes, and colors of the buildings. They will be making building collages out of different materials. Also children will paint eggs and have an egg hunt.

The children in First 5 preschool are continuing their study on trees and what trees can be used for. Children will discuss the changes in trees and what changes take place and in what seasons. Children are making a season book showing the changes trees go through.

Preschool 3 is working on their study of trees. They will be looking at the types of animals

that live in a tree. They will make a tree and be learning how the tree makes a habitat for the animals who live in the trees.

School Age - SPRING BREAK, the children will be enjoying their spring break with outdoor games and outside activities. Children will be exploring colors. Children will be using a variety of materials to create some art activities. Children will dye some eggs at the end of the week.

Merrill will now begin our last week with the exploration of the Building Study. Our investigation on Buildings, looks at the different materials used to make buildings and the children will be asked open ended questions of what they think happens inside the building? What is inside the building? How long do you think it takes to make the buildings?

The children will explore with a variety of materials to make their own creative buildings. They will describe what they made in a complete sentence. They will talk about what their building is used for, such as a school, house, or library, etc. As well, we will discuss what they like about their building. The children will have an opportunity to use paint and markers to design their buildings.

In addition, they will be able to learn new

vocabulary words such as, concert halls, mechanic shops, factories,

etc. They will use their imagination and pretend they are inside the buildings they made.

C.A.T. at the Y.M.C.A. Christian Arts and Theater has partnered with the Corona-Norco Family YMCA for a program called “Adventures at the Circus.” This is a 30 minute lesson that will demonstrate a basic understanding of theatrical

movement and presentation to our students.

Each week the Youth Centre at Merrill, City Park and the Main Y’s 3-5 year olds will have 30 minutes of the program.

During the programs there are four key indicators:

Students will execute planned movement from memory with minimal assistance

Students will use a variety of facial expressions to communicate mood

Students will recite lines from memory with minimal assistance

Students will vocalize with a musical track with minimal assistance.

You may have seen these performances if you attended the Fire & Ice or Pancake & Pozole fundraisers.

Our students sure enjoy this part of the curriculum!

Communication Corner

On Saturday, April 25th this organization, JustServe Helping Hands/The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and their volunteers will be at the City Park, Jurupa, and Main Y sites to assist in clearing out and organizing the storage containers/areas. Key staff will be at each site to assist and to inventory everything in each container/area.

The main contacts from JustServe are Shandra Carlsen for the Corona area and Curt Seymore for the Jurupa group. This group has a day every April that they have volunteers serve different agencies/projects in their area.

Home Depot Community Project has approved a grant to renovate the existing soccer stadium at the Main Y Facility. The in kind donation gift is worth $50,000 plus in-kind labor to do the project in two days: April 29 and 30. The Home Depot Team will provide materials, supplies, and labor through their Team Depot staff volunteers.

We are proud supporters of buying local! Every week we get a delivery from the Griffith Family Farms of oranges so that we ensure our students are eating fresh fruit daily.

We would like to continue to acknowledge to donations from Pizza Hut and Starbucks. Our families are thankful for this weeks donations.
