Basketball players across the county “drove to the hoop” on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to raise funds
and food donations for the Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc. (CAADC). The goal of
the 14th Annual “Hoops From the Heart” events was to involve young athletes in a day of service to help
Delaware County residents in need. Over $10,000 was raised to support the clients in CAADC’s pro-
grams. Since 2002, the event has raised over $90,000.
Five basketball clinics were held from 9 a.m.-noon Monday, January 19th, at Cabrini College in Radnor,
Haverford College in Haverford, Widener University in Chester, Neumann University in Aston, and
Springfield High School. The men’s and women’s basketball teams at each school conducted the clin-
ics, which were open to boys and girls in grades one through eight. All proceeds raised during “Hoops
From the Heart” benefit CAADC programs, which include emergency housing, social services, employ-
ment training and life skills training. About 400 youth participated. In addition, each athlete was asked
to donate a non-perishable food item that went to the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County, one of
CAADC’s emergency housing shelters. Over 250 food items were collected.
Members of Delaware County Council travelled to each clinic to meet the participants and collect the
food to be transported to the Life Center. “Hoops From the Heart is a great Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
of Service event because it involves hundreds of children coming together to make their community a
better place. We are also grateful for the generous donations of food that helps families in need at the
Life Center,” said Council Chairman Mario J. Civera, Jr. Pictured above at Widener University, center/
back row, are County Council members: Mario J. Civera, Jr, Colleen Morrone, David White, Michael
Culp, and District Attorney Jack Whelan (far right).
40 Years of Advancing Community
Development Delaware County Council
was joined by members of the U.S. Depart-
ment of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD), the County’s Office of Housing and
Community Development (OHCD) and com-
munity partners in recognizing the 40th anni-
versary of the federal Community Develop-
ment Block Grant (CDBG) program that helps
fund community improvements and services.
CAADC has been privileged to receive
CDBG funding in each of its 36 years of existence. Shown at the recognition are, front from
left, Ed Coleman, Chief Executive Officer of Community Action Agency of Delaware County,
Glenolden Borough Manager Brian Hoover, HUD representatives Damian Doyle and Fatina Ming,
Councilman Dave White, OHCD Director Linda Hill, engineer Charles Catania Sr., Marcus Hook Assis-
