undergraduate study and three years of study in law school.

• Helps clients work within the law to achieve the specific goals.

• Must be at ease when speaking publicly.

Paralegals :

• Assist in preparing for and attending a hearing.

• Do legal research

• Interview witnesses

• Manage evidence

• Draft legal documents, such as contracts or divorce papers.

Building a court case:• Paralegals sort through the thousands of

• Paralegals work independently but under the instructions of a lawyer.

It would be an over simplification to say that Corrections officers work only in jails, that police officers ride around in cars, and that fishery officers only work on boats.

There are a number of career fields that an individual can pursue if they have certification and education in corrections, law, security, and policing.

Corrections Officers

• Currently in Canada, corrections officers work in correctional facilities, transition homes, as parole and probation officers and within the restorative justice field.

• Their job remains the same; they act as the primary contact for all offenders.

A short history of Policing in Canada• Originally in Canada bar owners were

responsible for keeping the peace.• The first police officers acted not only as police

but as jailers, tax collectors, sanitary inspectors, and fire department engineers!

• The RCMP began when local police refused to keep the peace between labourers and employers, especially during strikes.

Policing in Canada

• For most of Canada, there is a federal police force, the RCMP, and there is a municipal police force, like the HRP.

• Since the 1920s, the RCMP have steadily taken on contracts with provinces and smaller municipalities to maintain order and law.

Military Police

Military Police serve the Canadian forces. With 1,250 full-time members, military police are the largest police force in Canada.

Military Police work in conjunction with civilian and allied military police forces.

Working as a Fisheries Officer

By definition, a fishery officer is expected to enforce the Fisheries Act and all other related Acts and Regulations. They do so by air, land and sea.

Fishery Officers protect resources and fish habitats by doing patrols. They are also called upon to educate and promote awareness of programs offered by the Department.

Forestry Officer• Takes care and maintains Crown lands• Ascertains that laws towards Crown Lands and

the resources on Crown Lands are being utilized correctly.

• Spends most of their days out in the field.

Working for the Law

Success College provides a two year diploma program in Corrections and Policing foundations. Applicants need to be 19 by graduation in order to graduate.

We are not a prerequisite for the RCMP or any municipal police force. Our program is a prerequisite for the Military Police.
