I use the slip slapped background application often; I love the random mottled look. Why develop a fl at background when with a little bit of brush manipu-lation you can add tone and texture to your back-ground. With the addition of dry brushing and stencil work this project will paint up very quickly for you. This is a quick and easy project which can be en-larged or reduced based on your surface size.

PREPARATIONSeal your surface with wood sealer, sand lightly and wipe with a tack cloth.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSBackgroundPaint the background using a slip slap brush tech-nique, load your 1" wash brush with Snow White, dip one corner of the brush into Indian Turquoise and the other into Blue Violet. Do not blend your brush on your palette; instead take it directly to your surface. Begin base coating the surface by using the slip slap technique and randomly vary your color placement on the surface to develop a mottled look. Reload your brush as needed to paint the piece. Work your paint down into the grooves of the surface.

Transfer the Moon to the sky area and using light circular strokes dry brush the moon with a blend of Snow White and a small amount of Blue Violet. This should be a very light blue mix, dry brush this lightly so that your background color is allowed to peek through. Using the dirty brush from the previous

paint application add a small amount of Blue Violet to the brush and randomly dry brush the right shaded side of the moon. Using a clean brush dry brush the left highlighted side of the moon with Snow White. Float shade around the outside of the moon with Blue Violet; keep this a very light transparent shadow. Wash Neon Scorching Yellow into the highlighted area on the moon. Note the pattern photo for placement.

Transfer the trees and ground area. Base the trees and ground with Payne’s Grey using a larger SL to base the branches at the top of the piece. Drybrush highlight the trees and ground with Blue Violet, using the dirty brush add Indian Turquoise and lightly dry brush the highlight on the trees and ground area. Thin Neon Scorching Yellow down to a transparent consistency and wash the paint into the highlighted areas on the ground and the base of the trees.

Stencil the stars in the sky with Snow White. Then transfer the pattern to the front of the board. Now, fl oat shade around the witch with Blue Violet.

WitchBase the witch’s face and neck with Hi-Lite Flesh, fl oat shade with Shading Flesh, and fl oat highlight with Snow White. Using a circular motion dry brush the cheeks with Electric Pink. Note the pattern photo for placement.

Base the witch’s pinafore, hat band, and stockings with Purple Pizzazz, dry brush highlight with Electric Pink, and fl oat shade with Dioxazine Purple.

Using a SL line the stripes on the stockings and hat band with Santa Red, line shade with Napa Red, and line highlight with Electric Pink.

Position the star stencil over the pinafore and randomly stencil the stars with Moon Yellow, fl oat shade the stars with Honey Brown and highlight with Snow White. Dip dot the center of each star with Snow White.

Base the dress and hat with Olive Green, fl oat shade with Hauser Dark Green, and fl oat highlight with Neon Scorching Yellow. Using a stylus dip dot the buttons with Napa Red.

Base the buckle on the hat band with Moon Yellow, fl oat shade with Honey Brown, and fl oat highlight with Snow White.

Base the patch on the hat with Santa Red and fl oat shade with Napa Red, dry brush highlight with Electric Pink. Dip dot with Purple Pizzazz and dot a highlight with Snow White. Note the pattern photo for place-ment.

Base the boots with Lamp Black, and fl oat highlight with Snow White.

Base the hair with Burnt Sienna and fl oat shade with Asphaltum. Using a SL layer the following paint colors, in this order, into the hair overlapping each color to develop the tones and textures of the hair: Asphaltum, Honey Brown, Burnt Sienna, and Napa Red. Using the SL lightly highlight with Neon Scorching Yellow. Note the pattern photo for placement.

BOOBase the lettering with Indian Turquoise, fl oat shade with Blue Violet, line highlight with Snow White. Float around the inside portion of the letters with Neon Scorching Yellow to add a glow to each letter.

SpidersBase the spiders with Santa Red fl oat shade with Napa Red and fl oat highlight with Electric Pink. Then base the diamonds on the spider’s backs with Orange Flame. Next, dip dot the eyes with Lamp Black and dot a high-light with Snow White.

Using a SL line the black legs with Lamp Black and the white legs with Snow White. Now line the web sus-pending the spiders with Snow White.

FINISHINGOutline the detail on the face and clothing with a black permanent marker.

Spray varnish and Enjoy.
