Berkshire County 4-H Volunteer Association

The Association has been busy helping with programming and planning events. This group meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month. All Berkshire 4-H Clubs should have representation on the council, if you are unsure if your club is represented – ask. The purpose of this group is to make sure programs are possible for all Berkshire 4-H’ers and scholarships are available for learning experiences are possible outside the county. We need participation across the board for this to work smoothly & fairly. Some events are: A Bowl-a-thon, a mini-golf tournament, Awards Night…. Call Angelica in the 4-H office if you would like more information on this group (413) 448-8285. Berkshire County 4-H Fair Association

Planning is well under way for the 75th annual Berkshire County Youth Fair. If you are 12 or older and are interested in being a part of this great leadership group, call Angelica in the Berkshire 4-H Office (413) 448-8285. The Fair Association regularly meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm at 600 Williams St., Pittsfield. This location changes in the summer months when meetings are held at the fairgrounds. This is an excellent group for those members who would like to take a step toward more leadership & responsibility (it also looks AMAZING on college applications!). Come join the fun, or call to find out other ways you can be a part of this group.

Looking for Ideas

This year’s Fair Association is planning the 75th annual Youth Fair – this is going to be a HUGE milestone. We are looking for ideas you may

have to make this a memorable event. Some ideas that have come in so far have been: Hold contests for Alumni, have demonstrations of farming methods and equipment from over the years, and have a mechanical bull! Email Angelica ([email protected]) or call the Berkshire 4-H Office (413-448-8285) if you have any ideas to pass along to the Fair Association. Up Coming Berkshire Events

As the weather outside gets colder, inside 4-H gets ready for Window/Poster Exhibits and Visual Presentations. Watch your email for news about these two Berkshire County programs. If anyone is interested in judging either window/poster exhibits or visual presentations, contact Angelica in the Berkshire 4-H Office (413) 448-8285. If your group would like to host a training for these programs, then call Angelica and make arrangements. Art Classes for 4-H’ers

Starting after the first of the year local artist and 4-H volunteer, Lee Everett, will hold a sketching/drawing class for 4-H’ers. The location will be in Pittsfield but dates, times and site are being worked out. Keep an eye on email and postal mail for information! (Everything you create at these classes will be something you can enter in the fair!) Berkshire 4-Hers in Action!

Window, Poster, Photo &

Exhibit Event

Communication skills, public awareness and teamwork! This is what our annual Window, Poster, Photo & Exhibit Event is all about and now is the time to prepare. This is an excellent winter project which offers members an opportunity to work together to develop and set up a window exhibit telling about 4-H or sharing some information on what they have learned in their project. Individual club members may also make a poster using a theme of their choice or enter a photo. This program offers an excellent opportunity to let the community know about the 4-H program. Clubs make arrangements to display exhibits or posters in local schools, libraries, stores or businesses February 23rd to March 7th. Exhibits, photos and posters made by youth 8 years of age

The Hampshire

County 4-H

Cavalry Horse Club

The Hampshire County 4-H Cavalry Horse Club has been very busy this Fall!

The Tricks And Treats Fun Day was a huge success, with riders going home with arms full of prizes and goodies. There were some great costumes too (see pics). Thanks to all of their sponsors, this fun day was a huge success! The club continues to fulfill their community service duties by making sure that a family in need had everything they needed for a Thanksgiving Day meal. They collected over 50 pounds of food, and with the help of Hilltown Services, they found a family (or two) that were now able to enjoy the Holiday. The club also stuffed stockings for seniors, wrapped gifts for Holyoke Hospice, and scrubbed about 20 stalls at Carriers Farm to complete their hours for 2014! The members had some fun and enjoyed dinner together before they went and watched the Fantasia show at the Equine Affaire in November. Members Cadence and Taryn Loven were selected to win the Peter Stone Model Horse Award for this year.

Their horse, Prince Phillip, greeted guests at the Equine Affaire where their award was announced. The model was presented at 4-H Hippology on December 6th. What an honor to have this amazing horse win this very prestigious award. The club is already busy planning 2015 and will round out the year with the club attending the Crimson Acres Christmas Pageant and having a night full of baking cookies and singing Christmas carols. The Cavalry would like to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and blessed Holiday season and an even more amazing new year! Hampden County 4-H Fair July 25, 2015

4-H Embryology Program

Each spring the 4-H Program offers an educational program for schools and youth agencies to hatch chicks in the classroom. Programs are offered in March and May with training prior to

each hatch. 4-H families are welcome to participate as well and are encouraged to participate in the first hatch. If you know of any schools or other educational groups that might be interested, please contact Mary Phelon at the 4-H Office (413-577-0759) or email [email protected]. Regional 4-H Hippology

Fundraising

Opportunity

Looking for a fund raising opportunity? The Hampden County 4-H Fair Association is looking for a 4-H club that would like to be responsible for a 4-H Food Booth during their annual fair on Saturday, July 25th at the Mallary Arena on the Eastern States Exposition Grounds. One of our exchange clubs did the booth in the past but they have completed their exchange cycle and members have graduated out of 4-H so we are looking for a new group. If you would be interested, please contact Mary Phelon at the 4-H Office – 413-577-0759. Big E Thank You!

The Hampden County 4-H Fair Association and 4-H Program would like to thank all the volunteers and families who volunteered to staff the 4-H Milk Booth and 4-H Apple Booth during the Big E. We could never conduct these projects without the help of each and every one of you. Thanks to your efforts we are able to conduct the 4-H Fair and Annual 4-H Awards Banquet, offer camperships and scholarships to 4-H members and support the

4-H program in Hampden County. A special thanks to the 4-H Milk Booth Committee: Jim & Sue Wright, Maureen LaPrise, Donna Turnbull, Stelle Hubach, Cheryl Philbrick and Mike Pietruska and the Special 4-H Fund Committee: Mark & Dave Modzeleski, Dolores & Bob Pozos, Mike Pietruska, Sue Wright, Joanne Tippett and Judie Wiezbicki.

New 4-H Clubs Needed – You

Can HelpDo you know of an adult who has an interest in youth and an interest or talent they can share? We are looking for volunteers to start new 4-H clubs

throughout Western Massachusetts. Word of mouth is the best way to recruit new volunteers so we are asking for your help. If you know someone who might be interested, please ask them to consider working with a group of youth from 5 to 18 (they can select a specific age range) for a minimum of 6 to 8 meetings. If you find someone interested, either have them contact the 4-H Office or call and let us know how to contact them. Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated! Seek & Discover 4-H Club

Seek & Discover 4-H Club members made toys to donate to the Dakin Animal Shelter. Some of the 4-Hers were able to go to the Shelter on Nov 22nd, National Adoption Day. They interacted with the cats and played fetch in the back room with a Dixie Dog named Patchy. They filled out the Foster Home forms, which will give 4-H’ers who live where they can't have pets a chance to help out with the foster care. The Seek & Discover 4-H’ers also helped out the 4-H Military Buddies program, wrapping gifts for Military Families at the Worcester Armory's Operation Homefront Holiday Distribution on Dec 10th.

At the first four, serve water, have fruits and vegetables as snacks, and add in a fun game for 15 minutes of physical activity. Then continue one or more of these healthy activities at four more meetings and you’re done! 4-H’ers will earn a free 4th H for Health pin and certificate if completed this program year. Wear the pin to show your club’s commitment to health! Ready to get started?
