Big Youth Forum Meet Up

Three YiPpEe members and one from the Teenage Cancer Trust attended

the Royal Derby Hospital. The theme chosen was Mental health and Well-

being: The Future is Young asking the question: Just whose responsibility

is it? The guest speaker was a rap artist Nick Brewer who is an advocate

for Mental Health and an Ambassador for Anxiety UK. He gave a very

moving rap on his own experience. Both young people and staff had op-

portunities to share good practice and good ideas. Workshops offered

were creative writing, meditation and yoga, lego therapy, clubbercise and

art therapy.

Trip to Brookes

In April 2018, YiPpEe visited Oxford

Brookes University. We were given a

tour of its facilities for training nursing

students, and then proceeded to meet

these students. They were reviewing

different resources available for patient

information, e.g. leaflets on

breastfeeding. YiPpEe members joined

in the discussion, thinking about how

these resources could be improved –

this is especially important for YiPpEe to

think about when their target audience is children.

Sleepover

Immediately after the YiPpEe film

launch.

YiPpEe members took part in a

sleep-over at the Children’s

Hospital.

The aim of this was to test ward

noise levels and their causes at 9,

12 and 6.

Film Launch

18 months in the making, the YiPpEe film launch

was an exciting occasion for all its members, both

old and new. The existence of this informational

film is very important for improving patient

experiences on the Children’s Ward at the John

Radcliffe Hospital, as it provides honest and useful

information about a child’s hospital experience.

Aside from phenomenal acting by staff and YiPpEe

members, it is well worth seeing by any patient,

parent or young person interested in improving

patient experience.

Risk Summit

The risk summit is an annual meeting discussing what the hospital could

improve on. Ishaan, Sara, Maryam and Kat attended the summit in the

summer as the only members of the public present. To ensure positive

patient identification, Ishaan proposed the idea of including photos in

patient records. The hospital now has plans to use this method.
