All About Operating Systems In computing, the operating system (OS) is the software responsible for direct control and management of hardware and basic system operations. Additionally, the operating system provides a foundation upon which to run application software such as word processing programs and web browsers.

Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk and controlling peripheral devices such as portable drives and printers. Operating systems also help with security, ensuring that unauthorized users do not access the system.

With Windows 10, apps work great in all modes and on all devices. Because Windows 10 updates happen automatically, you can easily stay current on the latest features and security. New features include Microsoft Edge- a brand new browser, and Cortana- a truly personal digital assistant. In the following topics, we will discuss getting started with and personalizing Windows 10.

About Signing In Accounts enable individual users to have their own personal space- including separate files, browser favorites and desktops. Accounts also determine the type of permissions available to each user. You can sign in to Windows 10 utilizing either a local or Microsoft account. Signing in with a Microsoft account will allow you to access OneDrive, the Windows Store and view your settings and stuff across multiple Windows 10 devices. If you performed a Windows 10 installation, or purchased a new Windows 10 machine or device, your account is typically created during the setup process. We will explore the process of creating accounts manually later in this tutorial.

The middle section shows open programs and files and enables you to quickly switch between them. When more than one file or program is open at once, the windows can cover each other. For this reason, Windows creates a corresponding button on the taskbar for each open window. You can switch between windows by clicking the appropriate taskbar button. The notification area in the right side of the taskbar includes the action center, clock, and other icons that communicate connectivity as well as status of certain programs and computer settings.
