The weather was kind, the festival had a great start with a bumper crowd. Many enjoyed the parade which drew praise from the visitors. The festival is the major fundraiser for the Rec Park which is owned by the community, a fact not known by many locals.

Planning
The Willunga Rec Park committee is launching a broad review of the development and maintenance of all its facilities and will be approaching clubs,
regular users of the facilities and the broader community to gather ideas and wish lists to include in a long term strategic plan.

We’re starting to build a Wiki about the Willunga area - the notable people, clubs, sports, churches, families, events, businesses and schools that have made Willunga a vibrant place for over 175 years.
If you would like to join us to research topics or write short articles for the Wiki, come to our next public information and training session on Wednesday 21 August 2013 between 2 and 4pm. It will be held at the Willunga Digital Hub, corner St Peters Terrace and Main Rd, Willunga.

The Noarlunga
Line
On July 21 Leon Bignell visited the Seaford Rail Depot to welcome Adelaide's first A-City Class 4000 electric railcar.
Two more of these rail cars will arrive shortly and will be used for intensive on-track tests and evaluations starting next month.
The Noarlunga line will be operational later this year and electric train services are expected to commence between Seaford and Adelaide early next year.
Leon recently returned from Europe where he held discussions with the five most influential decision makers in the cycling world and lobbied them to keep the Tour Down Under in South Australia. No decision will be made until after a review of the international cycling calendar but they were left in no doubt about the importance of the Tour Down Under to South Australia.

A Night
of Chocolatey
Indulgence at the
Show Hall
A night of chocolatey fun is on offer at the next Cinemallunga event at the Willunga Show Hall on August 31. 'Chocolat' starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp is the highlight of the big screen, while some short films, live music, wine and delicious chocolate treats will keep audiences warm and happy.
The children are also catered for with an afternoon showing of 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory'.This great comedy adventure, by author Roald Dahl will be a delight for all ages, and promises to be an old-style movie matinee experience with music, choccies, popcorn and lots of fun. Dressing up as Oompa Loompas or other characters is highly recommended!
Willy Wonka starts at 2pm, while the Chocolat evening starts around 7pm with the program in full swing by 7:30. Tickets are on sale from August 10th from the Aldinga Beach Newsagency, Willunga from Tall Poppy or McLaren Vale from the Chocolate Box. Meet the Museum robots

Students from regional and remote Australia are now able to virtually visit the National Museum via the Museum
robots developed using mobile telepresence technology.
Two robotic devices with cylindrical bases on wheels and large screens at the front. The robot on the left is black and the one on the right is white.
This project is the result of an innovative partnership between the National Museum, CSIRO and the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy. The mobile telepresence technology operates via the National Broadband Network or NBN-equivalent broadband connections.
The new technology enables students to interact with a museum educator through a robot equipped with a panoramic camera that allows each student to control their own view of the National Museum's Landmarks gallery. The students also have access to additional digital content about objects on display and a range of other interactive features.
The education team at the National Museum is currently devising interactive, collaborative and curriculum relevant programs for schools.
Community groups will also soon be able to access virtual tours using the Museum Robots from computer terminals at the Digital Hubs located at NBN-connected libraries and community facilities.

Join the Fight!
SOUTHERN FLEURIEU The Southern Fleurieu community will join forces with Cancer Council SA to unite in the fight against cancer, as Cancer Council SA’s Relay For Life returns to the Southern Fleurieu again next year.
The Relay for Life Chair, Mike Willett, says, “Relay for Life is an amazing community event where teams of friends, family and colleagues challenge themselves to take turns to keep a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run for 19 hours.” The official launch of The Southern Fleurieu Relay for Life will be held at a special dinner to be held at the Encounter Bay Bowling Club on 10

August 2013.
Mike said that the 2013 relay was a resounding success and expects the 2014 event to grow even more.

Festival

Red Dog visits
Willunga.
The cinemallunga boys Andrew, Brian and Seb went to scavenge a hospital bed Phil kindly offered for a prop for the ABF parade.
While chatting, Phil’s dog Jordy was very pushy dropping bits of wood by our feet begging we be part of the throw/chase/retrieval game that is Jordy’s ‘raison d’etre”.
After a few throws by Andrew, which was risky as it only encourages Jordy Brian felt something heavy on his shoe.. it was a spanner... unbelievable.
Son of a gun. This is either a dog with attitude or one who has a master who throws his tools around. Thanks Phil for the loan of the Bed and the laugh.

Willunga’s Modern
History
Reflections of Willunga is an important part of the Willunga175 anniversary celebrations. We aim to record oral and pictorial memories of Willunga from current and past residents, both young and old, to ensure that this valuable information is retained for the future.
The Reflections of Willunga sub-committee is interested to speak to anyone who wishes to contribute to the project. This is your opportunity to part-icipate in documenting the more modern history of Willunga. Do you have a story or special memory of Willunga that you’d like to share? Are you willing to be videotaped? If you’re a bit shy, we’ll be
collecting audio recordings, and will accept writ-ten information and photo-graphs too.
We’re also look-ing for volun-teers to help with collecting and collating the information. We need access to good quality video and audio equipment, and people with the skills to operate it. Transcribing the spoken word is another vital task that will ensure the success of the project.
This activity will begin late in 2013 and con-tinue through-out most of 2014. Collected
information will be compiled and made accessible in several ways, depending on available funds – probably a DVD and accompanying book, which will be available for sale; on the Willunga175 website and via other on-line means.

Willunga Football Club Demons Out Run Vale Eagles
Willunga and McLaren played a competitive first half on Sunday in front of a large crowd of Willunga Past Players and Officials. As the weather deteriorated in the second half Willunga’s superior skills and fitness allowed them to kick clear and win convincingly.
McLaren dominated the first ten minutes of the game. They had several shots for goal before Cameron kicked truly. Mutton and McEvoy were instrumental in getting the ball forward and were ably supported by McDonald in defence. Portlock and Burdett were the prime movers for Willunga and set up opportunities for their forwards who found the strong cross breeze a hindrance to accuracy. Brown tacked strongly and was awarded a free kick 30 metres out to kick the Demons first goal at the fifteen minute mark. Damian Fenoughty provided midfield run for the visitors and Hansen looked dangerous up forward. Gill narrowly missed a long shot. From the kick out, Glass kicked long to Steele who gave to Portlock whose pass hit the fast leading Butcher. A goal resulted from an outstanding end to end passage of play. McEvoy showed class for McLarens to drive the ball deep but the kick hit the post.
Willunga started the second quarter with endeavour. Burdett and Portlock produced skills which made light of the slippery and windy conditions. Brown kicked a goal from the goal square after a dropped mark then Alexopoulos set up Burdett who kicked a second. A minute later Butcher snapped a boundary goal to give Willunga a commanding lead in a low scoring match. Butcher almost kicked another but a desperate McLaren defender touched the ball on the line. Hansen scored a point on the rebound then Butcher marked strongly and kicked long. Another point. McLaren’s Mutton kicked a long point after a strong mark. The visitor’s forwards then fought hard

to keep the ball in their forward lines. Their efforts were rewarded when Cameron kicked long to Cowling who marked and kicked a goal from a tight angle after the siren.
McLaren kicked the first goal for the second half after Mutton again used his strength to mark in the goal square. Gill kicked their third straight a minute later to reduce the margin to two points. Steele and Butcher combined to allow Portlock to goal but McLaren counter attacked. Cowling earned a free and kicked truly at the six minute mark of the third quarter. Sadly it was McLarens last goal of the day. Willunga began to control the game and despite freezing rain, warmed to the task. Paterson gave Sherry the opportunity to goal. His long kick defied the tricky wind. Portlock kicked the best individual goal of the day when he played on from a free kick and bombed a long drifting goal. He almost repeated the result a minute later. His point gave Willunga a four goal lead at three quarter time.
Eight minutes of sloppy play at the start of the final quarter ended when Portlock marked and goaled from forty metres. Proctor, Ellis and Caesarowicz defended gallantly to stifle Willunga’s forward thrusts. Some Wakefield magic on his left foot produced a fine goal at the fifteen minute mark. McLaren attacked from the resulting centre bounce but were foiled when Glass marked strongly in the square. McDonald and Renney ran the ball out of defence and sherry goaled. McLaren again attacked from the centre. Cameron and Gill combined to give Damien Fenoughty a chance to goal but his kick just missed.
Willunga outscored McLaren by four goals in the last quarter and a half to run out comfortable winners.
-------- MAYOR'S CIVIC
RECEPTION
Recently, on a Friday night ( June 28), the Mayor of Onkaparinga hosted a gathering of sports people in Ramsay Place in the Noarlunga centre.
It was her idea to greet and present certificates to life members of sporting clubs in this council area. There was a talk from the Mayor in which she praised and thanked all life members who have provided valuable services to sport for many years. Sheryn McElligot had organised the event and sent out invitations to all the clubs to send two people to represent their sporting organisation.
From Willunga were the following life members.
Basketball- Margaret Peters and Vicky Simpson Football - Neil Lang and Gary Reed Golf - Graham Edson and Peter Foreman Netball - Eva Treen and Anne McDonald Table tennis - Darryl Peters and John Nixon.
The supper afterwards allowed people to chat and talk to the Mayor, each other and councillors. Reported by Darryl Peters
Willunga Table Tennis The next season will begin on Tuesday August 20 and Wednesday August 21. This is directly after the Willunga Almond Festival.
People of all skill levels are catered for and all equipment is provided. All matches are in the Show Hall in the Willunga Recreation Centre. If you wish to play in the 10 weeks of competition, ring John Nixon on 85565950 or Darryl Peters on 85964128.

Preparing to write a check, she pulls a rectal thermometer out of her purse and tries to write with it. When she realizes her mistake, she looks at the flabbergasted teller, and without missing a beat, she says:
'Well, that's great.... that's just great..... some asshole's got my pen!'

Church Notices The community at Willunga Uniting Church -Creativity Flourishing for Spring Art Exhibition.
The students at Galilee have been a hive of activity throughout the year in preparation for a very special art exhibition at Bethany Hall and Willunga Uniting Church which is sponsored by Willunga Uniting Church and Galilee School.
This follows the theme of the natural world and the environment. Entitled: The Spirit of the Child: For Earth’s Sake.
Buffy Woolcock, art teacher at Galilee describes the exhibition as centering on nature themes.
The launch of the exhibition will take place on Friday, September 6th at 5pm at Bethany Hall. The corner of St Jude Street and St Andrew’s Terrace, Willunga. Guest speakers will include Rev Nick Randall, and teachers associated with the art exhibition.
The exhibition will also be a feature of the season of creation throughout worship in September at Willunga Uniting Church.
The five Sundays feature the themes of ocean, fauna, storm, cosmos and blessing of animals.
The exhibition will be open each Saturday morning in September, with an entrance fee of $5 for families and $2 for adults.
The art works are described as multimedia and brimming with life and colours.

St Stephen’s church is a heritage building and like other 130 year old buildings requires regular maintenance. The current restoration work costing approximately $10,000 is being undertaken at the recommendation of the City of Onkaparinga Environmental Architect. St Stephen’s organises a monthly dinner at the Old Bush Inn on the 3rd Saturday night of the month after the 5.30 pm service for anyone wishing to join in for fellowship. The next dinner will be held on the 17

Meetings are held at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month (except January) in the Eco Classroom at Tatachilla Lutheran College, McLaren Vale. Enter off Tatachilla Road - the classroom is on your left after approximately 50 metres. Doors open at 7.15pm, so you can come early and see the animals. Visitors are very welcome. Supper is provided. Wed 7th August. Ochre Warriors: the history and culture of the Peramangk people, who lived for at least 2,400 years in the eastern Mt Lofty Ranges, from Myponga to Gawler. Guest speaker Robin Coles is the author of a newly published book about the Peramangk peoples’ use of plants and fungi and their extensive rock art paintings in the
Mt Lofty Ranges. Copies of his book will be available for purchase.
Wed 4th September. Frogs and Frog Monitoring. Regina Durbridge will talk about frogs, our local species, identification and monitoring, and will have live frogs on display. Regina is the Monitoring and Evaluation Project Officer from the Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning Association. Last year she coordinated the community monitoring component of the Southern Bell Frog monitoring project.

------- STARS QUIZ NIGHT “All the Worlds a Stage” On Saturday 17 August STARS will hold the annual fundraiser at 6.30 pm. Tables of 8 are available and this year the entry of $25.00 will include soup to keep everyone warm in winter. Prizes will be available for winners and the bar will be open for purchases of wine. The theme will feature questions on music, theatre and dance in keeping with STARS programme for the year. Funds will assist STARS in assisting emerging artists in a further career in the arts and also contribute the successful running of future programmes.
