Why should you study Geography?

Students choose to study Geography for a lot of different reasons. For many it is because they are interested in the world around them and want to understand more about their environment.

The year 3 booklet is a pre-GCSE textbook which prepares you to the new GCSE.

If you like geography this year, if you find the lessons easy and interesting,

Choose Geography as an option.

What will You learn?

There are FOUR units in the Edexcel Geography A qualification.

Unit 1

Unit 1: Geography skills and challenges

This unit will build on the skills you learned in years 1, 2 and 3 and give you the opportunity to develop more advanced skills.

For instance, we will learn how to use GIS, Geographical Information System such as:

Unit 1 Section b

You will learn about two of the major issues facing the world today:

- Climatic change

- Sustainable development

(Sections A and B= 25%)

Unit 2: The Natural environment

Section A – The Physical World

Coastal Landscapes, River Landscapes and Tectonic Landscapes.

Section B – Environmental Issues

A Watery World

Unit 3: The Human EnvironmentSection A – The Human World

Economic Change, Settlement Change and Population Change.

And ‘A tourist’s World’

which we are going to study until the end of

this year

Unit 4 Investigating Geography

This unit will involve going out of the school to carry out fieldwork and then writing it up. The task changes every year and is provided by Edexcel.

This investigation will be 25% of your final grade.

This year year 4 is investigating rivers!

What can I do after I’ve completed this course?

If you move on to A Level Geography and you continue your study of geography the skills you develop can lead to employment opportunities in:

- Journalism and Media- Engineering- Travel and tourism- Environment management (e.g. waste management)

and Environmental Law- Geology and Geophysics (earthquakes, volcanoes,

meteorology)- Marine biology- So many……….. Just look at Geography in

universities in the UK e.g. Geography at Cambridge - course guide , the USA and click on our next slide!
