The book is Plain Faith, A True Story of Tragedy, Loss, and leaving the Amish.

This is the story of Ora-Jay and Irene Eash, Amish farmers from northwest Montana whose

lives changed in an instant when a semi-truck struck the family buggy, killing their two

young daughters.

A%er the accident, the couple turned to their Amish community for comfort, but they

remained haunted by the thought that they might not see their girls again in heaven.

Would their deeds be good enough? Eventually Ora-Jay and Irene learned that grace―not

works―was enough to ensure their place in eternity. But with that knowledge came the

realiza!on that they could no longer live in an Amish community that didn’t share this

precious belief. Could they sever their connec!on to the Amish family they loved?

This is the story of their journey to the hope that is heaven, a hope stronger than the loss of children, family, and

a way of life. Fans of Amish fic!on will appreciate such a real-life look into the Amish community, co-wri$en by

bestselling author Tricia Goyer, and readers of all kinds will resonate with this tale of courage, resilience, and the

redemp!on found in the grace of Jesus.

This year, the WPLC Christmas Eve services will be held at 5:00 and 8:00 pm. The reason for

this change is that the trend over the last few years has been an overabundance of people

a$ending the 6:00 service, which has caused us to be in viola!on of our fire code for the

amount of people safely allowed in the Sanctuary. Our hope is that by holding the services

at these !mes, the service a$endance will be more balanced. We know this is going to

inconvenience some families, and for that, we do apologize, however this change is

necessary for the safety of the congrega!on. Thank you for your understanding.

Book Discussion: Tapestry of Fortunes by Elizabeth Berg

Cecilia Ross is looking for a change. She has decided to take !me off from her job as

a successful mo!va!onal speaker and sell her home. She moves in to a beau!ful old

house in St. Paul, Minnesota, complete with a big front porch, a wild garden, a chef's

kitchen--and three roommates. The four women are different ages, but all are feeling

restless, and want to find again the people and things they miss. One woman wants

to connect with a daughter she gave away at birth; another wants to visit her long-

absent ex-husband; a third woman, a professional chef, is seeking new inspira!on

from restaurants. And Cecilia is looking for Dennis Halsinger, the man she never got

over, who recently sent her a postcard out of the blue. This novel is a portrait of how

women grow through the rela!onships that define them, and a testament to the

power of female friendship.

From My Perch:

We are heading into the busiest !me of the church year, and we have much to be

thankful for.

Our Sunday School year kicked off with a full slate of teachers and shepherds for the

first, second and third rota!ons. We are s!ll in need of teachers beginning with the

January rota!on.

Our second rota!on takes us on a journey through the 66 books of the Bible. With a theme of Rte. 66, we travel

through the first five books of the Old Testament during our second rota!on, and the first five books of the New

Testament in January.

Our Confirma!on students completed their first community service assignments with filling the school kits for

Lutheran World Relief, helping with the children’s games at the picnic and serving the meal at Unity Lutheran.

In class, they are learning about the 10 Commandments. They will be collec!ng food for the Unity food bank

during October and November. The food will be delivered by the students on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

We will kick off the first Sunday in Advent with our special Sunday ac!vi!es including a Christmas cra% and

Advent bingo. We are looking for small bingo prizes for the children, so if you have something to donate, please

leave it in the box in Robin Nehring Brodie’s office across from the Altar Guild Room.

Though Christmas seems far away, we are already ge>ng ready for the Christmas program. Le$ers were sent

home with the children on Oct. 16 regarding their availability to par!cipate in the program on Dec. 18 during

the second service.

This year’s theme is “The Sights of Christmas”. There are speaking and singing parts in the liturgy, as well as

opportuni!es for instrumentalists. Watch for the le$er; fill it out and return it to Kelly Brown or Robin Nehring

Brodie. We hope to assign parts and give out the readings and script on Nov. 20.

All children are invited to the Advent Event on Nov. 27, but only those students par!cipa!ng in the program

should a$end Sunday School on Dec. 4 and 11. We will rehearse the program on Dec. 4 during the Sunday

School hour and on Dec. 11 from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Children not par!cipa!ng in the program are asked

to worship with their families on Dec. 4 and 11.

Pastor and I have already heard from two people who have indicated that they are willing to serve as mentors

for our Confirma!on students. We are in need of a few more. If you are interested or if you have ques!ons

about the mentoring program, see Robin.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

In faith, I remain,

From My Sunday School Desk,

The first thing that comes to mind for my November Leaf ar!cle is Thanksgiving; being thankful and coun!ng our

blessings. This Thanksgiving, I truly have many things to be thankful for, however, there are two things that stand

out. By the !me this newsle$er reaches your mailbox, I will have gained a “son-in-law”. Second, our Sunday

school con!nues to grow and we are so happy to welcome two new students this month.

During this !me of thankfulness and gra!tude, we are invi!ng you to par!cipate in our holiday gi% giving

opportuni!es. Sunday School will be having their annual toy collec!on, with all dona!ons going to Hope House.

We are asking each child in Sunday School to bring an UNWRAPPED gi% for their age and gender. However, gi%s

for any age, along with dona!ons of wrapping paper, gi% bags, bows, and tape will be greatly appreciated.

Dona!ons can be placed in the TOY BOX located outside of the church office. The congrega!on is invited to

par!cipate. Dona!ons can be brought in beginning November 13th

through December 12th

.

Along with our toy collec!on, we will again be collec!ng “Wish List” gi%s for the veterans sponsored by Hope

House. As we have done in the past, there will be three wish list items for each of the veterans hanging from the

fireplace star!ng November 13th

. If you would like to help fulfill these holiday wish lists, simply pick the wish list

item that you would like to purchase. To ensure that every veteran’s wishes are granted, we ask that if you are

unable to purchase the stocking item you pick, please return the stocking back to the fireplace. This allows other

congrega!on members to choose the stocking so our veteran friends receive their holiday wishes. Once you have

purchased the item, place the UNWRAPPED gi% in the wish list collec!on box located next to the fireplace by

December 12th

. This holiday gi% collec!on is very dear to me, so any dona!ons would be greatly appreciated.

The Sunday School Christmas Program, “The Sights of Christmas” will be held on December 18th

during the second

service. We invite those who do not have children in the program to s!ll a$end the service. Join us a%er the

service for fellowship downstairs in Hibbard Hall.

~Dona!ons of cookies and treats would be greatly appreciated~

The Leaf Page 11

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As I was thinking about what to write for this month’s newsle$er ar!cle, I naturally thought of

Thanksgiving and how much we have to be thankful for. It then occurred to me that this would

likely be the topic for many church ar!cles this month and therefore decided to give my piece

a li$le more considera!on before I began wri!ng. As I was looking through various commentaries about the

Thanksgiving holiday, I came across a picture of the Horn of Plenty and thought, “I have no idea as to what this

symbol means; I have no idea where it comes from?” Hence, a newsle$er ar!cle is born.

The Horn of Plenty (a.k.a. Cornucopia) is a symbol of prosperity and affluence that dates back to the 5th

century

before Christ. In Greek mythology, Amalthea (the foster mother of Zeus) raised and fed her son on the milk of a

goat; in return, Zeus (the leader of the mythological Greek gods) gave her the goat’s horn, which apparently had

the power to give to the person who possessed it whatever he or she wished for. Thus began the legend of the

Horn of Plenty.

The great thing about symbols is that although they have an original representa!on, we can take their meaning

and personalize it to suit the context of our own lives. As Chris!ans, we can therefore look at how the Horn of

Plenty can be represented in our lives as followers of Jesus.

For example, the Horn symbolizes prosperity and affluence, but what does prosperity and affluence look like in

the Chris!an life? Does it have to do with the amount of grace that one receives? Is it the amount of work that

one does in service to the neighbor or at the local congrega!on? Is it the amount of !me, talent and resources

that are shared in the name of Christ? Well, the answer to all these must be a firm and unyielding ‘NO.’ What

makes the Chris!an life prosperous and affluent is simply the presence of the living Christ…no more and no less!

Because of Christ’s presence, we can live lives of true affluence by knowing a sense of peace, serenity and hope

that transcends anything that could be obtained through the things of this world.

The Horn is also said to have the power to give to the person who possesses it whatever he or she desires.

Thanks be to God that this idea comes from Greek mythology and is far from reality. Can you imagine what your

life would look like if you got everything you desired? I don’t know about you, but for me, some of the best gi%s

I’ve received have been the !mes when God shot down my finest ideas for something of His own design. My

affluent life in Christ is best lived if I simply show up and remain willing to go wherever God calls, rather than me

telling Him where I ought to be led next.

Looking at all that God has done and is doing in our lives truly gives us reason to be grateful. So, I guess this ar!cle

is turning out to be one of Thanksgiving a%er all; Thanks be to God for allowing us to live lives full of affluence and

prosperity in Christ…and Thanks be to God for not allowing us to get everything we think we want or desire.

Thankfully in Christ,

Pr. Michael
