Because so many parallels exist between the two cultures, I want to share one foundational principle that Mr. Stanley develops to encourage us to counteract the cultural, and therefore often our slide, into secularism: the challenge to live from the Kingdom of Conscience as opposed to living from the Kingdom of Covet. Soon after the Israelites enter the Promised Land and just before Joshua passes away, he pleads with the Israelites to love the Lord their God and keep their focus on serving Him; the alternative of being disobedi- ent and distracted, states Joshua, is that the influence of the pagan nations will be “snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from the good land, which the Lord your God has given you (Joshua 23:13).” The Israelites did not heed Joshua’s advice: they instead maintained a horizontal perspective, looking out and around, living solely from the gratification of their senses, especially what they welcomed through their eyes, thus adopting a Kingdom of Covet. This disobedience soon led to disaster, destruction, all from “doing what was right in their own eyes.” In contrast, Joshua’s vision, a vision directed from God Himself, was for the Israelites to instead embrace a Kingdom of Conscience, a worldview shaped and directed by vertical vision that allowed the spirit of God to change their internal being, hearts shaped and molded by the very spoken words of their Creator/ Father/Sustainer. God wants the same for each of us, consciences that are tuned, guided, and directed into and by Him, hearts that clinicially and experientially understand the greatest commandment to love Him above all with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength. I also plead with you; please allow the Lord to infuse you with His Spirit so you too will live from a Kingdom of Conscience, a conscience transformed, molded, and carried by the will of our Triune God, a conscience from the inside out, not the outside in. If you allow God to transform you, then the answers to the previ- ously asked questions will completely reflect God’s leading and not the culture’s self-centered obsession. “Direct me in the paths of Your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward Your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to Your word.” Psalm 119:35-37 In Christ Jesus, Mr. Wagenaar

WHICH KINGDOM?What do you value the most? Seriously, what is most precious to the inner sanctum of your soul? If you cannot stand in front of a mirror and seriously self-examine your deep-est being, find a place to sit, undistracted and self-reflect. Now ask yourself the previous questions!

If you are brutally honest with the answer (s), what outside, cultural influences have per-meated your thinking to make you prioritize the core values that you do?

Over the past several months, high school staff and students have been viewing numer-ous lessons in a series entitled Right In The Eye, by Andy Stanley who both examines the

Israelite culture during the time of the judges and then connects these observations to modern North American culture.

Soon after the Israelites enter the Promised Land and just before Joshua passes away, he pleads with the Israelites to love the Lord their God and keep their focus on serving Him; the alternative of being disobedi-ent and distracted, states Joshua, is that the influence of the pagan nations will be “snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from the good land, which the Lord your God has given you (Joshua 23:13).”

The Israelites did not heed Joshua’s advice: they instead maintained a horizontal perspective, looking out and around, living solely from the gratification of their senses, especially what they welcomed through their eyes, thus adopting a Kingdom of Covet. This disobedience soon led to disaster, destruction, all from “doing what was right in their own eyes.”

In contrast, Joshua’s vision, a vision directed from God Himself, was for the Israelites to instead embrace a Kingdom of Conscience, a worldview shaped and directed by vertical vision that allowed the spirit of God to change their internal being, hearts shaped and molded by the very spoken words of their Creator/Father/Sustainer.

If you allow God to transform you, then the answers to the previ-ously asked questions will completely reflect God’s leading and not the culture’s self-centered obsession.

“Direct me in the paths of Your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward Your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to Your word.” Psalm 119:35-37 In Christ Jesus,Mr. Wagenaar

Sunnyside Christian Staff NewsAt the end of this year, we will say

“Good-bye” to our second grade teacher, Mrs. Schrotenboer. In her years at SCS, she has taught first graders to ju-nior high students. Holding high standards for her students, Mrs. Schrotenboer has worked tirelessly during and after school to help them achieve their fullest poten-tial. Because of this, she has gotten to

know her students and has built relationships with them that have extended past their time in her classroom. Her sense of humor has made learning fun; just ask her about Dr. Seuss’ Fox in Socks! Taking a day to applaud her second graders as Super Learners with a Super Heroes’ Day, embracing the fun of April Fool’s Day, and celebrating 100 days of learning are just a few examples of how Mrs. Schrotenboer has worked to bring fun and enjoyment to her students learning. Teaching reading continues to be her passion, indicated by her head-ing up special programs like the Central WA State Fair Read-ing Program and the Read for a Ride Program. But above all, through her words and deeds, Mrs. Schrotenboer has faithfully taught her students about Jesus and what it means to love and serve Him. We will miss you, Mrs. Schrotenboer! Thank you for positively impacting so many lives at SCS, and we wish you God’s richest blessings as you embark on your new life path.

C ongratulations, Mr. Sylling, on your retirement after 24 years of ser-

vice to Sunnyside Christian High School. Thanks very much for your involvement in so much of the life at SCHS: instruct-ing and managing the Industrial Arts and vocational agriculture classes, assisting in all the individual shop projects, coach-ing the FFA activities, serving as the tech coordinator, taking gate at home basket-

ball/football games, and even being the janitor for “your” building. All have appreciated your knowledge, expertise, and commitment to the students, fellow staff, and society. Even though you demanded your students work diligently, you al-most always wore a pleasant demeanor and are treasured for your friendliness and helpfulness. We have appreciated your lively observations, humorous anecdotes, and early morning humming. Again, we thank you for your years of service to SCHS, and more importantly, to our Lord. May God bless you as you continue to faithfully serve Him in your retirement.

I am about to wrap up my year as your in-terim administrator. This has been the

sixth time that I have served a school in such a position. Each year and school is different in some ways, but very similar in many ways as well. All the schools from Everett (twice) to Lynden, to Manhat-tan, Montana, to Escondido, California, and now to Sunnyside Christian School are strong academic, Christian institu-

tions with a long history of serving the students from Chris-tian homes. Sunnyside Christian definitely wants to serve along with our Christian homes and our churches to teach the next generation to be a transforming influence in the world that God places them. My wife and I have enjoyed our stay here in Sunnyside and appreciate all the support given us and the school. I encourage you to welcome Mr. Brad VanBeek and his family as they join the community in July.Gary Kamps

Sky Simpson is finishing her fourth year at SCS. The teachers and

staff will miss her friendship, and her students will miss her fun-inspiring way of teaching. Sky always has new and innovative ways to get her stud-nets learning in hands-on ways. Her Daily Five routine, her Dojo points, and her Go Books will always be re-membered by her students. Thank

you for the countless hours and incredible heart you’ve poured into your students and this school, Mrs. Simpson!

Sunnyside Christian School is excited to introduce our new Superinten-

dent and Elementary Principal! Brad Van Beek will be moving to Sunnyside in July and will start his duties then as well. Brad has spent the past four years teaching at a Christian school in Santiago, Dominican Republic. He and his wife, Ruth, have three children. Alan, who is 14, will be a fresh-men at Sunnyside Christian High School.

Their twin daughters, Genet and Rahel, will be 3rd graders. Brad and his family are excited to come to Sunnyside for many reasons. “I am excited to live in a community and work at a school where there is such rich history and so many roots, where children, parents and grandparents have attended, where there is a deep commitment to Christian Education,” Brad writes. “We are also looking forward to living in a multi-cultural community.” Their family is also excited to see more of Washington! “Having grown up in Michigan I didn’t get to see many mountains, so I am looking forward to exploring them in Washington,” he says. “We are also looking forward to exploring some of the rugged coastline. We also want to learn more of the culture of the area.” “We are thankful to God for his provision,” Brad says. “We are humbled and hon-ored to have the opportunity to serve Sunnyside Christian School. I am excited to see what God has in store for SCS.”

Thrift Shop

The SCS Thrift Shop has been blessed with five Sunnyside

Christian High School student employees since its inception over twenty years ago: Nicolette Plooster, Rita Dalrymple, Danika Wagenaar, Sarah Tyhuis, and Tan-ner Foster. Two of our student em-ployees agreed to write about their experiences at the Thrift Shop.

Danika Wagenaar

My best memory/expe-rience was the people with whom I worked. I loved my coworkers! We could talk or laugh about anything, and

they were so supportive about my future and still are. Plus, there are a lot of good finds! What I learned while working at the Thrift Shop was how to interact with people. Interaction with people is going to be a huge part of my future vocation, and the Thrift Shop was a good kick-start-er for me. I learned how to make small talk and also how to be assertive. I ap-preciate those skills. Where I am now and where I will go? I have just finished my fi-nal semester of nursing school at St Luke’s College in Sioux City, Iowa. On May 5, I will graduate with my associate’s degree in nursing and will be moving back to the area. The Lord willing, I will be working full-time as a nurse and finishing up my bachelor’s degree online!

Sarah Tyhuis

Some of my fa-vorite memories at the Thrift Shop have been work-ing with a great group of people

and growing closer to them. Also, I enjoyed making videos for Face-book to advertise upcoming events. What I have learned working at the Thrift Shop is the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone and building realtionships with peo-ple I normally would not have been in contact with. The Thrift Shop has helped me build better communica-tion skills with the general public, and learn basic cashier and organi-zational skills. I have been attending Whitworth University in Spokane, and I am enjoying all the new experi-ences that come along with college. I am working toward a degree in Sociology with a minor in business.

For our 5th Annual Grandparents and Grandfriends Day, we started with a K-12 Cha-pel along with our invited guests. Since it was on April 14, Good Friday, the chapel focused on Jesus’ incredible sacrifice for our sins. After chapel, our students and their guests visited the classrooms to participate in a variety of fun activities. They decorated cookies, explored our solar system, completed puzzles, threw bean-bags, and so much more. We finished the day with a lasagna lunch in the gym!

Spring Drama Production

“Up the Stage Over”

Once again, the Sunnyside Christian drama students did a fabulous job on their produc-tion. The small cast gave a tremendous per-formance of a difficult play about teens per-forming a school play. Each evening was a bit different and thoroughly enjoyable! We are sad to see our five seniors, Lauren Cer-vantes, Justin Faber, Tanner Foster, Andrea Werkhoven, and Patrick Zecchino graduate from our drama team. However, all of the kids worked hard, and we are very proud of them! Thank you to all who attended the play and supported the kids and the pro-gram!

The Buddy SystemWe use the Buddy System quite often here at SCS. Our 1st and 4th grade students are paired up early in the year to help each other with special art projects and other activi-ties. But once the 1st graders learn to read well enough, the 4th grade buddies meet with them each week to help them take the AR quizzes on the computer. Our Kindergarten

students also pair with our 5th grade students for read-ing buddies, art proj-ects, and special recess time. The Buddy Sys-tem creates healthy and fun relationships for students outside their age groups, and it becomes a special friendship.

Read for a Ride

In April, the K-2nd graders were challenged to Read for a Ride. For every 10 minutes they read, they earned one ticket. At the end of the month, they gathered in the gym to draw tickets for one girl’s bike and one boy’s bike. Jayna Elenbaas in 1st grade won the girls bike and James Perez in 2nd grade won the boys bike. James celebrated his win by taking his bike for a ride around the gym!

SCS Foundation Invites Terry Kok as Dinner SpeakerThank you to all who attended the 22nd Foundation Annual Dinner on

March 16! Our speaker for the evening was former teacher and SCHS Principal, Terry Kok. Terry introduced us to a new building phase in Sunnyside Christian’s history that needs to start now: growing our financial contributions to the SCS Foundation’s endowment fund. “Christian educa-tion funding has reached a critical point and a different challenge,” he said. “Your giving needs to go in a different direction but for the same cause.”

For the 2016-2017 school year, the SCS Foundation has given a total of $103,097 to Sunnyside Christian to use in the general fund and for scholarships. Praise be to God for His faithfulness!

The SCS Foundation needs to fundraise $150,000 to build the endowment to a sustainable level for this year. Reaching and exceeding this goal will move us toward the $2,000,000 benchmark we need to reach to give back to SCS as needed. Please prayerfully give to this need and help us build Sunnyside Christian’s future.

The purpose of the SCS Foundation is to provide an endowment for Sunnyside Christian School to ensure its future. We want our Christian school teachers to continue educating our children through the lens of Christ.

Please consider giving to the SCS Foundation today. Your donations may be made by check mailed to our address, by secure online donations at www.scsfoundation.com, by donating the minimum required distribution from your IRA, by including the SCS Foundation in your will, and many other ways.

Golf Tournament June 3, 2017 Register your teams today!

ment. The Tournament will be held at Sun-nyside’s Black Rock Creek Golf Course.

We are looking forward to a great tourna-ment, so register your team today! Download your registration form at www.scsfoundation.com.

You don’t need to be a great golfer to win prizes. Prizes will be awarded for Longest Drive, KPs and Longest Putt. Everyone who golfs will be included in an additional drawing for prizes!

Teams from each of the following catego-ries will also be eligible for prizes: Men’s Teams, Women’s Teams, Couple’s Teams, and Senior Teams (55+).

Contact the Foundation office at 837-2050 or visit www.sunnysidechristianschool.org/golftournament.cfm for more information.

Thank You, Legacy Group MembersThe SCS Foundation started the Legacy Group in September 2015 in order to give supporters an opportunity to be a part

of an annual addition to the SCS Foundation’s endowment fund. Many of you come from a long history of Christian education and are following the legacy that came before you. Some of you are just beginning the legacy for your family. You are now part of a greater group of people creating a legacy for our community.

If you would like to join the Legacy Group, please contact the Foundation office at 837-2050. Junior High Spirit Week

In March, the Jr High Student Council organized a Spirit Week for the 5th-8th grade students. Monday was Crazy Hair Day, Tuesday was Blast from the Past, Wednesday was Jersey Day, Thursday was Class Color Day, and Friday was Spirit Day. Each day, a class and an individual from each class were declared the winners and were awarded candy. The students also invited all the elementary classrooms to collect during the week canned and dry goods for the local food bank. It was a success!

Life Options Walk

Many SCS familes and staff participated in the Life Options Walk and fundraising on April 22.

In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week, we celebrated by doing special things for our teachers throughout the week. We are proud of our teach-ers at SCS. They have been called by God to this profession, and they teach with passion, joy, and love. We are truly blessed! Be sure to continue to thank our teachers whenever you see them!

SCHS Physics Class Project

At SCHS the physics and chemistry classes alternate every year, and this is the year for physics. Throughout the year, students have studied the scientific method, the planets, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and often engage in experiments or related activities. Some of the experiments we have done include de-termining the friction coefficient between objects, creating a Newton’s Cradle, and most recently constructing a Rube Gold-berg machine. What is a Rube Goldberg machine? It is a com-plex contraption or series of simple devices that link together in order to accomplish a simple task. It is named after Rube Goldberg, who was an American cartoonist and inventor who lived in the early 20th century. Most modern machines can be reduced down to six simple machines, and it was the objective of the students to create a contraption that could pop a balloon in the most complicated way possible and to include as many simple machines as possible. The three teams were senior guys, junior guys, and the girls. They had one week to con-struct their machines. With extra-credit on the line for the best project, a certain amount of secrecy was in process! The senior guys won the competition. All in all, it was a great experience for the students! Next project— building toothpick bridges!

Focus! One, two, three--shoot! This fall for the first time I had the opportunity to teach Digital Pho-tography. Our class of 27 students consisted of 9th & 10th grad-ers and one senior. Students were assigned to take 12 photos on a theme every week using their phones, digital cameras, and tab-lets. The means of taking the photos did not matter, as we focused on what makes a good composition, finding interesting subjects or angles, and getting a very clear image. Throughout the semester I encouraged the students to really look around them and use their most important tool--their eyes. The students rose to the challenge and took fantastic pictures from the classroom to the mountains to their own back yards!

Mrs. Haak

Mrs. Glenda Wagenaar teaches sewing in Home Economics to the sopho-mores for the 1st part of 2nd semester. They learn basic sewing skills, craft-ing pillow cases, covers for throw pillows and simple blankets. The main project that they complete, with the help of Hester Groeneweg, is a quilt that they donate each year to the Booster Club Auction.

COOKING CLASS

Mrs. Sheryl Van Belle teaches the cooking unit of Home Ec to the sopho-mores for the 2nd part of 2nd semester. Students are taught basic cooking skills and cost analysis. They learn to make bread pudding and fettuccine al-fredo. They also process grape, peach, and mixed berry jam. Each year Mrs. Van Belle also has the class do a project that they donate to the Booster Club Auction.
