DID YOU KNOW? The gladiolus is a flowering plant that belongs the iris family and is where pink,
purple and white flowers can blossom in the full sunlight. The stems and leaves of the gladiolus stand tall
and have pointed tips. It comes as no surprise that gladiolus get its name from the Latin word for sword
(gladius). In Rome, the gladiolus is still regarded as the flower of the gladiators.
The gladiolus can represent many different things. In many cultures, it signifies remembrance, but the
Victorians used the gladiolus as a symbol of infatuation, implying that the giver’s heart has been “pierced”
with passion.
Officially into the 2nd half of the year, July was well
spent with times of entertainment, evening outings, and
learning new things. We had a great evening of baseball
with the Waynesboro Generals and it was the perfect
temperature for the Stonewall Brigade Band in Staunton.
We had a good time celebrating the birth of our nation
with Waynesboro’s Extravaganza. Kimball Swanson
was here to entertain while we enjoyed the campfire and
s’mores, followed by a beautiful fireworks display. The
always faithful, Charlie McIntire, was back to share his
Summer repertoire with us. The music he chooses
always seem to bring back memories! Verona
was a popular destination this month as we
took a trip to the ever popular Fashion
Gallery to satisfy our shopping needs as well
as a lunch trip to Rack ‘em Smack ‘em Ribs
which was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S. The month
of July was topped off with the Glenn Miller
Orchestra playing at the Wayne Theatre.
They have managed to preserve the music of
the Big Band era while still being relevant to
today’s audiences. Look inside to see what is
coming up next!

A Good Night’s Sleep
Sleep and Aging Older adults need about the same amount of sleep as all adults—7 to 9 hours each night. But, older people tend to go to
sleep earlier and get up earlier than they did when they were younger.
There are many reasons why older people may not get enough sleep at night. Feeling sick or being in pain can make it hard to sleep. Some medicines can keep you awake. No matter the reason, if you don’t get a good night’s sleep, the next day you
may: 1) Feel Irritable 2) Have memory problems or be forgetful 3) Be depressed 4) Have more falls or accidents.
Get a Good Night's Sleep
Being older doesn’t mean you have to be tired all the time. Here are some ideas for a better nights sleep:
Follow a regular sleep schedule. Go to sleep and get up at the same time each day, even on weekends
Avoid napping in the late afternoon or evening, if you can. Naps may keep you awake at night.
Develop a bedtime routine. Take time to relax before bedtime each night. Read a book, listen to soothing music, etc.
Try not to watch television or use your computer, cell phone, or tablet in the bedroom. The light from these devices may make it difficult for you to fall asleep. And alarming or unsettling shows or movies, may keep you awake.
Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature, not too hot or too cold, and as quiet as possible.
Use low lighting in the evenings and as you prepare for bed. Exercise at regular times each day but not within 3 hours of your bedtime. Avoid eating large meals close to bedtime—they can keep you awake. Stay away from caffeine late in the day. Caffeine (found in coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate) can keep you awake. Remember—alcohol won’t help you sleep. Even small amounts make it harder to stay asleep. If you feel tired and unable to do your activities for more than 2 or 3 weeks, you may have a sleep problem. Talk with your doctor about changes you can make to get a better night’s sleep.
For more information, come by the Wellness Center for a copy of the handout or visit the National Institute on Aging https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/good-nights-sleep

HAPPY HOUR
AND...POTATO CHIPS?
Friday, August 24
4:00PM– Jacob’s Tavern On August 24, 1853, in Saratoga, NY, a
grumpy diner sent his French fries back to
the kitchen saying they were “too thick
and too soggy”. The response to this
complaint came to be known at the first
potato chip, made extra crunchy, extra thin
and with a lot of salt. Since then, the
potato chip has become one of the most
well known snacks in the world. To
celebrate, we invite you to come down to
the Tavern for Happy Hour, a “chip
buffet” and a taste test of some unusual
flavors of the potato chip.

We will begin a new Bible Study in
August entitled The Jewishness of Jesus. This
study is written by Rabbi Evan Moffic specifically for
Christians. It will give us fresh insights on how Jesus’
contemporaries knew him, how his Jewish faith shaped him,
on the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer and the miracles he
performed. I look forward to a deeper understanding of how Jesus’
Jewish roots shaped his ministry and
how it can illuminate new
understanding of our ministry as
Christians today. We will begin our
Tuesday studies on August 7th at 10:00
in the Wellness Center Conference
Room. One book will be available for
reading in the library. Personal copies
are available in my office for $11.50.
Historical Church Tour: Many have
asked to tour the local Jewish
Synagogue. This will be a nice
complement to our bible study in
August.
Sign up in the Wellness Center to visit the Temple House of Israel in
Staunton on Wednesday afternoon, August 22. This temple was
founded by a retired major of the Confederate Army with history
dating back to 1896. It promises to be a great addition to our
summer historical church tours.
