Greeley West MYP sophomore Nashrah Mohdreza was recognized in Washington, D.C for its annual Film Festival. This year’s theme was “The World I Want to Live In” and Mohdreza made a film about equality and diversity.

This whole event encourages grade school kids to create films and speak their ideas. If you are a finalist, such as Mohdreza, you get to screen your film at the White House and meet many

famous actors and singers. Some of the actors Mohdreza met were from the new hit television

show, Stranger Things.Mohdreza was paired up with a film

maker from the American Film Institute to be her mentor through this process and learn about more about how to make films. Mohdreza also got to attend South by South Lawn which was a festival outside the White House that featured The Lumineers and 2000 invited guests.

At the SXSL event, Mohdreza got to meet President Barack Obama and had her picture taken with him. She

was also one of the first people in the world to see Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest documentary, Beyond the Flood.

“My inspiration to do this was I wanted to have my story be heard. We live in a society where there are so many racial problems and racial stereotypes which cause so many terrible things to happen,” Mohdreza said.

Mohdreza wanted to help provide encouragement and some enlightenment on her situation for other kids to recognize.

Recently there was a smoothie bike that was given to the District 6 office by the Healthy Kids Club. This smoothie bike is the only one in District 6 and is being rented out to schools to promote healthy habits.

The smoothie bike works like any other blender. The bike uses mechanical energy to run the blender. You place all your ingredients in the blender and then to blend them together you pedal the bike which triggers the blade.

Last week the credit recovery teacher, Mr. Greg McAdams, decided to rent the bike. McAdams is using the bike as a reward for his students. When his students finish their goal, that student gets a ride on the bike.

McAdams stated, “The bike gave kids a reason to complete their goal.”

The students have been loving the bike as well.

Freshman counselor Mr. Mitch Johnson is visiting each Career and Life Choices class and introducing the students to a new District computer program called Naviance. Naviance has many intriguing things about it, including personality tests, college applications, and research into careers.

Naviance is a website that all Greeley West students have access to. Johnson is having the CLC classes discover what careers they may want to consider given their personality traits. The Naviance

website asks students to answer a personality test and after you take the test it shows what job careers are the best for you. These careers feature links to various information about the

career, like how much money you can make and how many years of college you need to have.

Freshman Carter Bruning took the test already. “It’s a great way to learn about your personality and know what jobs fit you the best,” Bruning said.

Naviance also helps upperclassmen with college applications and helping them get into the college they want.Bruning

Estes Park trip brings IB science students together IB juniors at Greeley West High School

attended their required Group 4 project up in the mountains at the YMCA. There are 26 juniors in the IB class and they stayed the night in cabins for two days in order to produce their Group 4 project.

Prior to their field trip, the students were given project groups with approximately two students from every science class, chemistry, physics, and biology. Each group was also given a topic: earth, wind, water, fire, or magic.

Within their groups, the students had to construct a project including all three subjects of science. With the data they received, the students

will continue their research and experimentation until their presentation date, in December.

Besides the project, the Group 4 field trip was a way for the junior IB class to have team bonding. In their free time, they played games, got to know one another, and learn how to work together.

IB junior Megan Arscott knows the importance of this project. “It is important because it teaches you how to work together as a group and to better understand the connections between each science course. I learned that is really important to be prepared because when

you go through your research process, you only have a certain amount of time, and you must manage you time wisely,” stated Arscott.

PSAT test set for WednesdayIt’s about the time that students all across the

nation will start taking the PSAT. The PSAT is the preliminary scholastic aptitude test. In a way it is basically a practice test of what the actual SAT will be like.

The counseling office at West has given students the opportunity to sign up for the PSAT. The test is completely optional and any student who wants to take it regardless of grade is encouraged to sign up.

The test will take place Wednesday in the wrestling room, followed by the actual SAT that

takes place later in the school year around Spring.Unlike the PSAT, the SAT is a mandatory

standardized test that all juniors must take. It counts as a college entrance exam.

In other words, it is an admissions test that colleges really look at and depending on how well a student performs, it can determine their college acceptance and even acquire scholarships for them. It also helps students get qualified to join the National Honor Society.

If interested in signing up, it is not too late. Students may still go to the counseling office and must bring a payment of $15 to sign up.

Trump perpetuates rape cultureDonald Trump has been a topic

of debate this year, with people agreeing with him and people completely opposed to him, but recently he’s been shown making extremely offensive and controversial comments in a video where he boasts about groping women.

He described groping women

and referred to women in a derogatory way, laughing about the things he was graphically describing.

Politics aside, this public figure that millions and millions of Americans are seeing everyday displays such an extremely clear example of rape culture. Young girls all over America, are seeing

how men, even men that are running for president, laugh and talk about sexually assaulting women like it’s nothing.

Young women are seeing that men can get away with it even after being caught on camera saying things like that. What kind of an impression does that make? What kind of thoughts are being caused because Donald Trump is being allowed to run for president, making comments that only uphold rape culture?

Tardiness is result of crazy schedule

With the school year so far the school has been making an effort to have kids on time and no absences from their classes. The effort seems a bit futile considering the schedule. School starts at a bright and early 7:15 am. Most kids are dead tired

and straight up do not f u n c t i o n before about 10 a.m.

With our bodies still undergoing so many changes our

bodies exhaust themselves to the breaking point. School starts too early for us teenagers and it’s making the school reputation look bad because of adult ignorance and borderline punishment for our stereotypes perpetrated by society and media.

To continue, quite a few kids are late, missing, or just go home to eat food during our very short lunch. A whopping 40 minutes for a walk to Burger King, the gas station, or home. Burger King is entirely packed until the last ten minutes of lunch with hungry kids in need of food to power through the classes. As a result, many kids are late and marked absent for class because of food needs. A lunch should be a full 60 minutes to ensure a return to school. There simply isn’t enough time for the kids to grab a bite and be back on time.

A solution would be to formally appeal for a schedule change for the entire school or maybe a petition signed by students to emphasize the change needed and desperately wanted.

The Fritzler’s Corn Maze cut-out, as seen from eyes inside a helicopter. We were fortunate enough to have Fritzler’s give us a VIP treatment as local journalists to bring attention to their business. The ride was an unforgettable op-portunity.

In September, our newspaper teacher Mr. Dave Falter received an email from the Fritzler’s Corn Maze inviting part of the Greeley West High School West Word staff to get an exclusive look at the

new activities, games, and corn cut-out for the 2016 maze. We had the opportunity to cover this event for the paper.

Have you ever been inside a helicopter? Yeah, neither had we, and we can ensure that our experience was phenomenal. On September 14, we had the opportunity to go to Fritzler’s corn maze and ride in a helicopter with other professional news

reporters from across Colorado such as, the Denver Post, Reporter Herald, and the Greeley Tribune. While on the helicopter, we were able to take an aerial photograph of the maze. In addition to the helicopter ride, we were also able to be some of the first people to ride the new simulator attraction, which takes you through snowstorms, plane rides, and haunted simulations.

In addition to the helicopter ride and simulator experience, Fritzler’s was kind enough to give us two free tickets to the maze. We are grateful to Fritzler’s Corn Maze for giving us this unforgettable opportunity.

Helicopter experience was incredible opportunity

Picture perfectSenior starts photography career with portraits

Senior Jorge Jaquez has already launched his photography career by successfully taking senior pictures for his peers at Greeley West High School.

He first started getting into photography when he talked to his friend, Lobna Alsrraj, who persuaded Jaquez to start his own Instagram page that featured different students around West. Jaquez reached out to his photography role model, Hannah Swick, who is a professional wedding photographer.

Over the summer Swick became Jaquez’s mentor and gave him tricks and pointers about

how to increase his level of photography. Through Jaquez’s learning experiences, he has discovered what he enjoys. “I tend to take

pictures of people and portraits; I feel like nature is not my style. I have a way to show strong emotions through portraits rather than scenery,” Jaquez said.

Jaquez’s friend, senior Taylor Holm, is Jaquez’s go-to model for when he has an inspiration for a new project. On September 4, Jaquez and Holm traveled to Estes Park to take different pictures with the mountain scenery behind them.

This year, Jaquez will be charging a $40 fee for taking senior pictures.

IB freshmen picked for conferenceIn an effort to build the IB program for

continued long-term success at Greeley West, new IB Coordinator, Ms. Marie Beach is sending students to various leadership conferences. On Monday, October 3, multiple IB freshman were given a chance to go to a leadership conference in Berthoud.

“The IB Program is great and we have to keep building it up. (One way to do that) is getting the freshman to start their high school careers off great,” Beach said.

The conference was more of an individual learning time followed up by a speech given by an inspirational speaker. The whole conference is based off school learning and how to be a good student. They started the day off by working on a a group project.

After they did the project, they got to listen to an inspirational speaker, Mike Smith. He is a world renowned skateboarder. He is a millionaire and he gives out millions of dollars a year. During his speech he gave out a $500 skateboard to a freshman.

IB secretary Ms. Yvette Finger took the freshman on the trip and said, “This was a great opportunity for the kids. The conference is to encourage students to improve climate and culture in their school community, which it did.”

Another year of ‘Dancing’ ends with Nugent winThe 2016 Dancing with the Teachers was a

very successful event. The whole theatre was filled with students, teachers, and parents. Every

teacher that was dancing did a great job and it was a lot of fun to watch.

The top three dancers were Peyton Book with Mr. Ryan Allen, Enmanuel Rodriguez with Mrs. Amy Zulauf, and Cassie Bradshaw with Mr. Tom Nugent. The winner was Bradshaw and Nugent who did a country dance.

Nugent’s footwork was amazing and their chemistry is what led them to victory. Zulauf and Rodriguez finished second and they danced to a Justin Timberlake song.

Rodriguez was the first boy to ever compete in this show and he most definitely shocked a lot of people by how good they did.

Bradshaw said, “I was very surprised I won, this is my first year on the Poms team and I wasn’t expecting to win at all.”

Bradhsaw also had a great help with having Nugent as her dance partner because this is his second year winning it. Bradshaw said, “He was great to work with, he made it a lot of fun.”

STUCO leads blood donations

The 2016 annual Greeley West blood drive was last Wednesday, October 11th. The blood drive at Greeley West is always a success and many students contribute to saving lives. The student council at Greeley West and the student council advisor, Mr. Daniel Mork, made the blood drive possible.

Mr. Daniel Mork said, “essentially, the goal is to just help people who really need the blood, only one pint of blood can help save up

to three lives.” The blood drive is where you can donate

a pint of blood to charity to people who are sick and are in need of blood. Donating blood can help a family member, friend, or even a random stranger. Whoever it goes to, it can save their life.

Paul Cangilla has donated the last three years and says, “I know giving my blood will save a life somewhere and that is a great feeling. It’s good to know that I can change someone’s life by simply donating a pint of blood.” Cangilla

has donated three times for Greeley West and three other times outside of West.

West students attend Loveland Trump rallyRepublican Presidential candidate Donald J.

Trump held a rally at the Budweiser Event Center in Loveland, CO. Over 10,000 people attended the rally, setting a building-attendance record.

Trump gave his campaign speech that lasted about an hour. In the speech he talked about Hillary Clinton’s past, including her email controversy. Trump also stuck to his planned remarks like building a wall and illegal immigration, the economy, ISIS, and other conservative topics.

Greeley West senior Anthony Adkisson attended the rally Monday night. Anthony and his brother Brandon got in line at 11:30 a.m. to have a good seat.

Adkisson stated, “The rally did have an impact on me because it showed me he isn’t as bad as the media puts him out to be. If you actually watch/attend one of his full speech rallies you will realize that the media is playing a huge roll in this election.”

Adkisson is a supporter of Trump for a variety of reasons. “I support Trump because he is trying to get hard-working people their jobs back, put an average amount of tax percentage based on your wealth class, and he isn’t going to talk about terrorism control because he is actually going to do something about it.”

The Greeley West football teams lines up on offense against Grand Junction on Friday, October 7.

Football team wins two straightAfter coming off of a tough loss to Windsor, the

Spartans planned to move on and bounce back against the cross town rival, Greeley Central. In which they did just that.

This was Central’s homecoming game and they were totally dominated the Spartans. The final score was 42-10.

After a very scary start which involved three fumbles and Central leading by a score of 7-0 after the first quarter for the Spartans, they were able to quickly turn it around and end up leading 21-10 at the end of the first half.

Greeley West came out hot in the second half

and was able to leave the bad plays behind them. West took the Rivalry game once again with a strong dominant win.

Sophomore running back Derek West explained his feelings after the game, “We definitely had some pre-game jitters which I think caused that bad first quarter.”

This game is one of the biggest games of the season so it can always be a little stressful. “It felt really good to get the ‘Dub’ after the game. It felt good to go in there and whoop their butts,” West said.

Senior Darren DeLaCroix was awarded the MVP award after having 182 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

The following week Greeley West also had their 2016 Homecoming game against the Grand Junction Tigers.

The Spartans had a slow start, but eventually blew up and gained plenty of rushing yards to get out to a decent lead. It was one of the fastest games of the season due to pure rushing offenses for both teams.

As time ran out, the Tigers tried to rush and pass to get past the Spartans defense but West wouldn’t allow that. Greeley West went on to win 27-17 and sent the fans and themselves home happy with a Homecoming game win.

Volleyball team defeats Poudre in five-set marathonThe Greeley West volleyball team ended

their tough losing streak after they pulled out an exciting win last night against Poudre High School in five sets. West was able to get a big lead early after winning the first two sets fairly quick. However, Poudre was able to turn their game around and ended up winning the next two sets. However, West won out the battle with a score of

15-13 in the 5th set.Senior Ashtyn Egan

expressed her thoughts about the win. “It felt really good to finally win after the slump we’ve been in and I know it set a fire under our feet and helped us realize what we are capable of,” Egan said.

The Spartans believed that the game should have not gone to five sets but are still satisfied with the win. “Going

into five sets against a team that we should have beat in three is definitely stressful but we all kept our composure really well and did what we needed to do on the court to finish it,” Egan said.

West hopes it can get on a win streak soon and compete for spot in the playoffs. Egan believes that this game started that streak. “It motivated us a lot because the last couple weeks we have been struggling, I think we really needed this win to get us going and help to play to our full potential and finish the last half of our season strong,” Egan said.

The Spartans followed the victory with an appearance in the Greeley Central Invitational. West went 1-3 with a victory over Wheatridge.

Unfortunately, the that victory against the Farmers was their last win of the season. In the past week, the Spartans have lost to Frontier, Fort Morgan, Roosevelt, and Monarch.

Results from their games against Loveland were unavailable at press time.

Runners look to regionalThe Greeley West cross country team had

a week to remember during the week of September 30, coming off a second place finish from the boy’s team, and a city championship awarded to the girl’s team.

The Spartan girls have won back-to-back city championships under coach Rich Davis. Junior, Maria Geesaman came in first for the girl’s team, proving once again that she’s one of the top runners in Weld County.

Iralynn Carmona was one of the top runners for the Spartans cross team as well. When asked about her performance and the overall team performance, she stated, “We’re excited to keep running well, and working hard towards Arizona.”

Both teams ran at Cheyenne East the week of

October 5th. Where Senior Andrew Wethington took a break from the rigorous competition at the varsity level to lead the junior varsity team to break a sub 20-minute mark. The boys team finished second out of eleven teams, while the girls finished fourth out their eleven team pack.

Regionals for the 5A Region 3 Conference will be held Thursday at Thunder Ridge High School. 13 teams will run and only the top 4 are taken to state. This is the first year only four teams proceed to state; last year the Spartans finished fifth and in turn attended the state competition. Coach Davis looks to continue putting his highly competitive team deeper in the state title run.

The cross country team continues to prepare and look forward to their November trip to Arizona, where both teams will compete at the South West Regional qualifier.

Soccer team maintains shot at 5A playoff appearance

The Greeley West boys’ soccer team picked up another win last night against the Loveland Indians 5-1. After a crushing defeat to the Boulder Panthers 8-0 two weeks ago, the boys have bounced back to win 3 of the last 4 games.

It started with a double overtime victory over the Fossil Ridge Sabercats 3-2, which gave the Spartans a huge confidence boost for the upcoming games.

Then their very next game they won in overtime again, against the Poudre Impalas 1-0. After

two straight victories they lost a very tough conference game 1-0 to the Monarch Coyotes. It was a big loss for them because the Spartans had so much momentum going into the game. But they bounced right back in last week’s game against the Loveland Indians 5-1.

The Spartans look to make a big playoff push with a 6-6 record in their remaining games and it will start this week against the 10-3 Greeley Central Wildcats. The boys look to take their confidence from last year’s game against them to hopefully pull off a big victory.

Cranson rewards ‘perfect’ students

At the beginning of the school year, Principal Mr. Jeff Cranson challenged students to not have any absences, no failing of classes, and zero missing assignments from any class starting on the first day of school until October 1st.

The students who met the challenges’ requirements were honored during homeroom on Wednesday. They were given breakfast at the library which included donuts and beverages.

Junior Maria Geesaman was one of the students who met the standards and was invited.

Her involvement in cross country really helped her with accomplishing the task. “I know that if my school work isn’t done, I won’t be able to run,“ said Geesaman. “It was also cool seeing how many people were successful and determined to meet the challenge as well,” Geesaman added.

“If students are rewarded more often for their hard work, more students would be motivated to become better students,” stated Geesaman.

On Thursday October 6, 30 juniors and seniors from Greeley West high school were inducted into the National Honor Society.

This is the first group since 2013 of NHS members from Greeley West High School to be legitimate members, given that the NHS group last year was not officially a part of a chapter. One of West’s newest teachers, Ms. Elizabeth

Lee, said she decided to be the NHS teacher sponsor because, “NHS provides opportunities for college, and it also gives students something to strive for.”

These students were excepted based off of their academic achievement as well as their community involvement. Requirements to be a member of NHS include

a GPA of 3.6 or higher, 18 hours of community service per semester, and most importantly, you must uphold integrity and honor throughout your high school career. In order to do so, a member cannot cheat, plagiarize, or be suspended at any time. Failure to meet any of these requirements results in dismissal from the chapter.

NHS members held their first meeting Monday October 10 at lunch to discuss electing officers as well as their Thanksgiving project.
