The Purpose of a Resume
A resume is the “bait” that gets you in the door for an interview
To obtain an interview and convince the employer you are unique
You are selling yourself

A bad resume can prevent you from getting the interview.
If there is no interview, there’s no chance of getting the job!

Things to Remember When Writing a Resume
Must be well organized
Do not use “I” in a resume, but use statements when writing the description
Must be easy to read and to the point
Employers generally spend 10-15 seconds scanning a single resume
Tells how you fit the position and why you are the best candidate for the job

First Impressions
A resume serves as your first impression to an employer/college
A resume is an important document that allows people to get to know you before an interview
Even the strongest writers need editors to review their work
A single mistake on a resume will be caught by someone reviewing it, so seek the help of your teachers/peers for editing

Customize ResumeMost effective resumes are customized to a specific job
Research both the position and the company
Helps you determine the essential skill they want
Helps you determine what you need to know in order to be qualified to do the job
Customize your resume based on what the employer stated as the job requirements
Do NOT exaggerate or lie on a resume
Employers will expect you to be able to do everything you say you can do UNIT 1 LESSON 2

What’s an Objective?
A Objective is a brief statement that appears at the top of a resume that expresses the applicant’s career goal or desired occupation
Using the drop down menu, select Objective to begin

Summary
A Summary is a quick way to highlight the most significant accomplishments and skills on your resume

Work ExperienceFor Work Experience, make sure you list any job that gave you useful experience or skills
Even if you didn’t get paid, you worked for a parent or relative, or you worked for yourself, you probably still gained valuable experience and accomplished something meaningful

Education
For Education include coursework related to the job objective, apprenticeships, workshops or seminars
List other interesting things you have studied to show that you are a well-rounded person

Adding ReferencesReferences may NOT be family members unless they are your employer
You must have permission from each person listed to use them as a reference
Verify with each reference how they would prefer to be contacted
References can make a big difference
Always think about how your supervisor would describe you to others

If you need to edit or delete sections of your resume, use the pencil or red circle icons to edit or delete items

Customizing Your ResumeOnce you are finished writing your resume, open the Customize Your Printable Resumes tab
You will need to Name your resume
You will also need to select a Format to use

Functional resume, or skills-based resume, highlights skills and accomplishments rather than work experience
Chronological resume highlights your work experience
Combination resume is a combination of chronological and functional formats to bring attention to the most relevant information to meet employer’s needs

Once you have completed your resume, you will need to Save
You can also print your resume, by selecting create a new print format

Research Your Career Objective
Open explore careers & clusters under the careers tab, enter your desired career that matches your resume objective
Research Overview, Knowledge & Skills to see if your resume summary matches the required skills and knowledge

Things to Remember. . .
You should update your resume on a regular basis
Resumes are very useful when it comes time for teacher recommendations
Teachers will typically ask for resumes so that their recommendations are more personal
Students should create multiple resumes
Doing so will allow for different resumes for scholarships, employment, college, etc.
