Volvo, Arnold Machinery Donate RoadBuilding Equipment to Museum

Less than 20 percent of the associate member respondentssaid sales into the rental channel decreased in 2010 whileonly 1 percent of the respondents expect a decrease in 2011.

“Clearly ARA members are more optimistic about 2011and have a positive mindset,” said Christine Wehrman,ARA’s executive vice president and CEO. “This under-scores the importance of The Rental Show in Las Vegas. Thetiming is right for solidifying the buyer and seller connec-tions, learning how to further promote the rental concept andtaking advantage of tax benefits.”

The Rental Show is scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 2,2011, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

“Rental companies can benchmark their businessesagainst these survey results and The Rental Show also pro-vides a great opportunity for attendees to validate the surveyresults by visiting with other rental operators andexhibitors,” Wehrman said.

The survey results reflect a snapshot in time of those whoresponded and may not be representative of the industry asa whole.

Volvo Construction Equipment and Arnold MachineryInc., the Volvo Construction Equipment dealer in four west-ern states, have delivered a Volvo DD29 asphalt compactorto the Vietnam Aviation Veterans of Arizona MemorialMuseum in Maricopa, Ariz., as a contribution to the muse-um’s support and recognition of United States military vet-erans.

The Vietnam Aviation Veterans of Arizona was created in2000 with the primary mission to establish a museum to paytribute to and memorialize the veterans of the Vietnam Warand all veterans of the United States military. The museumand its displays, dedicated to educating the public on mili-tary aviation and its impact on the defense of the country, isopen daily, with no admission fee, to the public. It has a fly-in type airfield for “fly and view” visits. The museum islocated approximately 30 mi. southwest of Phoenix.

The Volvo DD29 roller compaction machine will be usedby the fly-in museum to maintain and service the 2,600 ft.runway, taxiways, and infrastructure at the institution.

Colonel Charles Millar, president of the MemorialMuseum, commended the two companies for their donationand support of the organization.

“Companies like Arnold and Volvo are key to the successof the many veterans’ organizations throughout the United

States. Their participation in our program brings credit to theveterans that have sacrificed so much for this great country.I cannot express enough our gratitude to them.”

In a joint statement upon the delivery of the equipment tothe museum, Tom O’Byrne, president, ConstructionEquipment Division, Arnold Machinery, Phoenix, Ariz., andGöran Lindgren, president and chief executive officer, VolvoConstruction Equipment North America, Asheville, N.C.,said: “We take a great deal of pride in making this donationto the museum. “Their generosity and spirit of support for this uniqueinstitution meets the highest standards of community serv-ice,” Lindgren said.

Komatsu Launches PC450LC-8Komatsu America’s PC450LC-8

hydraulic excavator has a standard heavy-duty boom, and offers reduced noise levelsinside the cab. Komatsu’s latest series deliv-ers maximum digging force with fuel econ-omy in tough digging conditions, accordingto the manufacturer.

The PC450LC-8, with a flywheel horse-power of 345 hp (257 kW), has an operatingweight of 100,860 lbs. (45,749 kg), and ispowered by a Komatsu SAA6D125E-5engine. The electronically controlled HPCR(high pressure common rail) fuel injectionsystem provides low noise operation, andremains fuel efficient while delivering powerand productivity.

The PC450LC-8 is equipped with KOM-TRAX technology, whichsends machine operatinginformation to a secure Website utilizing wireless technol-ogy. Data such as operatinghours, location, cautions andmaintenance alerts arerelayed to the web applica-tion for analysis.

The KOMTRAX fleetmonitoring system increasesmachine availability, reducesthe risk of machine theft, allows for remote diagnosisby the distributor, and pro-vides a wealth of other infor-mation to drive business effi-ciency and productivity, according to the manufacturer.

Special features of the PC450LC-8include:

Large Multi-Color MonitorThe 7 in. LCD monitor enables accurate

smooth work and displays data in 10 lan-guages for global support. There are fivemodes of operation that may be selectedthrough the monitor panel: power mode, economy mode, lifting mode, breaker modeand attachment mode. The monitor paneldisplays the machine maintenance trackingand the image from the standard, counter-weight-mounted rearview camera system.

Built for Durability and Reliability

All major components on the PC450LC-8including the engine, hydraulic pumps, motors, and control valves are exclusivelydesigned and produced by Komatsu. Aheavy duty boom design is now standardequipment. The boom and arms also exhibitlong-term durability and are resistant tobending and torsional stress due to largecross-sectional structures, thick high tensilestrength steel, interior partition walls, andlarge one piece castings. Komatsu frames aredesigned using the most advanced three-dimensional CAD and FEM analysis tech-nology.

Electronic components such as con-trollers, connectors, sensors and wiring haveundergone extensive testing to ensure relia-bility in the harshest conditions. The elec-tronic connectors are DT-type and sealagainst dirt and moisture. All hydrauliccylinders are protected by metal guard ringsfor additional reliability. Hydraulic hoses areequipped with O-ring seals versus conven-tional taper seals to provide extended leak-free life. Long replacement intervals forhydraulic oil, engine oil and filters keep themachine up and running for increased hourson the job.

Versatility to Match Different Job Applications

The PC450LC-8 comes equipped with

two boom mode settings, five workingmodes and Power Max control. Thesemodes are designed to match engine speed, pump flow and system pressure to specificapplication requirements, providing theoperator with the flexibility to match equip-ment performance to the job at hand.

With many excavators operating a widevariety of working attachments, thePC450LC-8 is equipped with breaker mode(single action circuit) and attachment mode(double action circuit) that allow the opera-tor to adjust hydraulic flow directly from thecab through the large monitor panel. Theattachment flow control has been improvedand is more flexible for effortless attachmentadjustments.

Cab Enhancements Provide Comfortable Working Environment

A wide spacious cab with a high backoperator seat provides support and comfortfor reduced fatigue and higher productivity. The multi-position, PPC (pressure propor-tional control) levers and armrest integratedwith the console levers allow the operator towork in comfort while maintaining precisecontrol.

For some folks, building demolition con-jures up images of a wrecking ball slamminginto the side of a building or an aging Vegascasino imploding into a cloud of dust. Butthe truth is that in today’s highly regulated, extraordinarily safety-conscious demolition

industry, those spectacular sights are rarelyseen. The tools of the trade most often usednow are excavators equipped with an arsenalof specialized hydraulic attachments.Shears, grapples, hammers, and processorssurgically execute section-by-section decon-

struction. Simply put, excavators and theirhydraulic tools have revolutionized demoli-tion.

Times Are A’Changin’“We’ve come a long way in a short

amount of time,” said JeffKroeker, Kroeker Inc.,Fresno, Calif. “The materi-als are not just wadded up ina ball and hauled off any-more. We have to be selec-tive in the demolitionprocess. We have to abateany hazardous materials. We have to figure out thebest way to bring down astructure safely and effi-ciently, and how to segre-gate the majority of ourwaste stream onsite. Werecycle about 85 percent ofour building debris and 100percent of our concrete. Weresell what at one timewould have gone to a land-fill. The industry haschanged by leaps andbounds.”

Kroeker is in a position toknow. Currently the secre-tary of the NationalDemolition Association(NDA), Jeff has been on theboard for 11 years. He finds, among other things, the net-working aspect extraordi-narily helpful in his day-to-day business operations.

“Since we operate in sev-eral states, I know who I can call to findmore trucks, or where to haul concrete, orwhere to find additional equipment.”

The Right FocusKroeker said NDA’s number-one focus is

safety and training. “Your prequalification for certain

Fortune-500 companies, municipalities, orpower companies is based on safety as well

as your track record. It also can be based onhow green your equipment is. Having late-model equipment that can handle the latestattachments is very important. In order to becompetitive, you better have the right equip-ment.

“And that’s what Hitachi brings to thetable. We’ve had the best of luck with theirequipment. And with the support of Papé,our local Hitachi dealer, it’s made for a goodrelationship. Plus, if we are working a joboutside of Papé’s area, they’ll set us up withanother Hitachi dealer to take care of us.

“Support is huge, and in fact, was one ofthe selling points of buying Hitachi.

Downtime is everything. We have a contractto fulfill; we have people waiting. But withthe Hitachi dealer network, it is a huge assetto have that kind of horsepower andresources behind us.”

Orange PowerKroeker Inc. has a Zaxis 450LC, special-

ly equipped by Jewell with a tilting cab andan 82-ft. (25 m) long-reach arm. They alsohave a ZX200LC-3.

“Our operators are happy with the crea-ture comforts of Hitachi. They sit in thereeight to ten hours a day. They have the sameproductivity in the eighth hour of the shift asthey do in the first because they’re not beatup.”

Kroeker makes it a policy to involveequipment operators in the selection process.Asking them what the most productive and

most comfortable machine out there led thecompany to Hitachi. Of course, pricing andsupport were crucial, too.

“We looked at several brands and Hitachicame in with the best number first. The otherguys then revised their numbers downward. To my mind, we made a deal and it’s not agame. I’m not in the used-car business. Giveme your best number and I’m going to moveforward.”

The company’s philosophy is that whenthey buy a machine, they finance it for threeor four years and get a full-coverage warran-ty for that time period. They find it’s a greatinsurance package — they won’t have anextra eight- or ten-thousand dollar expense ifthey lose a pump.

“This business is mechanical,” notedKroeker. “Something’s going to break — it’seither going to be the building or themachine. By applying the right tool and rightleverage, it should be the building that gives. You don’t go in headstrong. You use theattachments to complement the excavatorrather than rely on brute force. And it’s aneducational process. Sometimes you’ve gotto think your way through and come up withdifferent approaches.”

Versatility is KeyGenerational family-owned demolition

companies are the norm inthis business, and Kroeker isno exception. It’s owned byJeff’s mom, Joyce, and hisdad Ed, and sister Jill helprun the day-to-day opera-tions.

However, unlike a num-ber of their competitors, thecompany offers an extraor-dinarily large range of serv-ices. Their many licensesinclude general engineeringcontractor; earthwork andpaving; building, moving, wrecking; well drilling; haz-ardous substances removal;and asbestos. The companyis licensed to work inCalifornia as well asArizona and Nevada. Jeff ispersonally licensed in NewMexico and Hawaii, furthershowcasing the company’sdepth of experience.

These certifications letthe company offer seamless, turnkey operations, oftenwithout the use of subs. They own roll-offs, theirown fleet of trucks, and evenoperate their own 47-acreC&D recycling facility, complete with a huge hori-

zontal grinder to handle wood, an onsitecrusher, and a 31-station picking belt whereworkers separate debris by hand for a morecomplete recycling process.

“One-hundred percent of our concreteand asphalt gets recycled,” said Kroeker. “Ican’t think of the last time we buried con-crete. I know in other parts of the country, where there is an abundance of limestone orquarries, they still bury some. But in

California, there’s a huge push to save ourvirgin materials for either ready-mix orasphalt products and utilize our recycledconcrete and asphalt for road base.”

Reaching the FutureKroeker’s high-reach ZX450 and his

more traditional ZX200 have been well-accepted on job sites. Clients are impressedby their mobility, breakout force, smooth-ness, and quiet operation. They’re alsoimpressed by the skilled touch of their oper-ators. In addition to the long arm and tiltingcab, the ZX450 also has a water line thatruns up to the processor to hold down dust.

A remote camera at the end of the armenables the operator to see precisely what heis doing as he manipulates the universalprocessor over 80 ft. (24.4 m) in the air.

“We had a job in downtown SanFrancisco to partially tear down an old six-story apartment complex. We couldn’t closethe sidewalks or the street, and had to leavepart of the roof intact.

“Our high-reach ZX450 was ideal for thejob and was a big hit with the contractor andthe city. It represents the future of demoli-tion.”

Kroeker Adapts, Changes With Demolition Demands

The National DemolitionAssociation

The National Demolition Association represents more than 1,000U.S. and Canadian demolition companies. It provides information onadvances in equipment, services, and educational programs.

The NDA helps keep regulators informed about issues in the demoli-tion industry while increasing public awareness of the economic andsocietal benefits of demolition.

The NDA has been taking a proactive approach to working withfederal agencies responsible for regulations, such as the EPA andOSHA. In fact, a recent demolition academy was held at OSHA head-quarters in Chicago. The thinking is that by helping design legislation, the results will be workable and practical. For example, since high-reach excavators are relatively new in the United States but common inEurope, the NDA is consulting with its European counterpart to reviewsome of their policies and then go to OSHA to suggest rules andguidelines. For more information go towww.demolitionassociation.com.

Common Misconceptions AboutDemolition (courtesy NationalDemolition Association)Misconception

• Demolition contractors primarily implode or blow up buildings.• Demolition contractors unnecessarily overcrowd landfills with debris.• Demolition contractors don’t participate in the nation’s recycling

effort.• Demolition is a primitive business.

Fact• Implosions account for less than one percent of all demolition work.• The industry is reducing its use of landfills in favor of recycling.• The demolition industry was salvaging building elements and mate-

rials for reuse long before it was the green thing to do.• A safe and successful demolition project requires working knowl-

edge of construction and the law.

This eco-friendly demolition job in San Francisco wasa big hit with the contractor and the city.

AED Holds Annual Summit, CONDEX

(L-R): Barry, Matt and Anne Stoughton, all of BLSEnterprises Inc., Itasca, Ill., display their tufpads andrubber tracks.

IronPlanet’s display drew a lot of activity. The compa-ny is now doing weekly online auctions.

Among the most innovative new products displayed atthe CONDEX show was the Arctic Sectional Snowplow.Randy Strait (L), president of Arctic & Ice ControlProducts and one of the largest snow removal con-tractors in the Midwest, explains his products’ bene-fits to representatives of Ohio CAT.

(L-R): Stopping by the Construction Equipment Guidebooth are 2011 AED Chairman Dennis Kruepke, hiswife Barb and Rick Dahl, president of Metrolift Inc.

LuiGong showcased an extensive lineup of its heavyequipment.

Paladin and its large variety of construction equip-ment attachments had a strong showing at CONDEX.

In it for the long haul, Towmaster trailers has beensupporting AED and CONDEX for many years. (L-R)are Dave Lundin, CFO Janelle Johnson and Lennie Stulc.

Midland Manufacturing and its U.S. distributors hadan astounding year in 2010, having maxed out its pro-duction capabilities; the company already has madeplans to expand production for 2011.

AED held its annual Summit & CONDEX show Jan.26 to 28 in Orlando, Fla. Representatives from theindustry’s leading dealerships and manufacturers

from the United States, Canada and abroad attended theAED convention.

The mood during the show and conference was upbeat. After two consecutive years of dramatic declines in the mar-ket, in 2010 dealers in the United States saw sales improvebetween 10 and 15 percent.

During the Chairman’s Inaugural Breakfast Jan. 28, NorthAmerican construction equipment distributors electedDennis Kruepke to the position of 2011 Chairman ofAssociated Equipment Distributors. Kruepke is presidentand CEO of McCann Industries, Addison, Ill., the Case deal-er serving the Chicago metro area.

Kruepke entered the construction equipment industrythrough manufacturing doors, initially with Gehl, thenToyota’s skid steer group and Mustang. He joined DickMcCann’s company in 1995 as partner and president of thennewly formed McCann Power & Equipment — the compa-ny merged that business with its McCann ConstructionSpecialities in 2000, and Kruepke was named president andCEO.

Also during the summit, AED announced its 2011 legisla-tive priorities.

“What happens in Washington will, to a great extent, determine whether AED members are able to grow and pros-per, or whether the equipment industry continues to scrapeby or shrink further,” said AED President and CEO TobyMack. “The association will aggressively push for robust andsustained infrastructure investments and tax and labor poli-cies that create an environment conducive for job creationand economic growth.”

“Underinvestment in our national infrastructure poses aserious challenge to our economic growth and must be a topcongressional priority,” said AED Vice President ofGovernment Affairs Christian Klein. “When combined withtax policies that have stifled growth and discouraged invest-ments, the construction equipment industry has been hitespecially hard. Without a new approach, industry unem-ployment will continue to outpace other sectors andAmerica’s economic well being and competitiveness will beseverely undermined.”

Strong Fourth Quarter Hints at Growth Within IndustryChief Financial Officer Ed Rapp said

increases in gross domestic product ofroughly 6 percent in developing countriesare leading naturally to rising demand forCaterpillar’s products.

As China and India urbanize, they willneed more and better infrastructure, and theirpeople will demand a higher standard of liv-ing, which also feeds demand for productsand commodities, Rapp said.

“The road to progress begins with theroad. Period. You’ve got to have that basicinfrastructure,” Rapp said.

Caterpillar said it hired about 19,000 peo-ple in 2010, including 7,500 in the UnitedStates as it ramped up to meet demand. Those hires restored more than half the37,000 full-time, contract and part-time jobsthe company eliminated during the reces-sion.

At the end of the year, the company had104,490 employees, a little more than halfworking outside the United States.

The company plans to invest about $3 bil-lion in capital projects in 2011, more thanhalf in the United States. It is trying to boostproduction to reduce the wait for its miningequipment, now eight to 18 months.

“They do have a significant base in theU.S., so it does give us a window on what’shappening here domestically,” Windau said.

A hitch could come with inflation, whichcould hurt the bottom line for manufacturersbecause it makes their raw materials moreexpensive. But for Caterpillar, higher com-modity costs also means more demand formining equipment, which can help its bot-tom line.

Manufacturing remains a major source ofU.S. economic activity, at 11.2 percent, down from a peak of 28.3 percent of U.S.economic activity in 1953, according to theCommerce Department.

Growth in manufacturing was a key forcepulling the U.S. economy out of recession.Factories added 136,000 jobs last year, thefirst annual gain since 1997. And the U.S.manufacturing sector is the world’s largest, producing 21 percent of all manufacturedgoods globally, according to the NationalAssociation of Manufacturers. Japan comesin at No. 2 with 13 percent, and Chinarounds at the top three with 12 percent, thetrade group said.

Other U.S. manufacturers could benefitfrom the forces buoying Caterpillar. AndGeneral Electric Co. — which makes prod-

ucts from dishwashers to wind turbines andderives about one-fourth of its profit from itsfinancing business, GE Capital — releasedan encouraging fourth-quarter report Jan. 21.

GE said its quarterly net income rose 52percent from a year earlier, and CEO JeffImmelt has said he expects GE’s profit to bedriven by industrial growth in China. Thecompany earned $4.46 billion on revenue of$41.4 billion for the period that ended Dec.31. Its quarterly revenue rose just 1 percent, but it was the first increase from a year ear-lier in nine quarters.

Eaton Corp., which makes hydraulic andtransmission systems for the auto and spaceindustries and military, said Jan. 27 that itsbookings rose 36 percent for the quarter thatended Dec. 31. Its quarterly net income rose17 percent to $280 million on revenue of$3.7 billion, also up 17 percent.

The positive outlook for Caterpillar andother manufacturers depends on the econo-my continuing to recover. They wouldreceive a major boost if the U.S. housingmarket rebounded. Conversely, Caterpillarsaid its results will be hurt if governments actprematurely to fight inflation by raisinginterest rates.

Caterpillar announced plans in 2010 to

build three new facilities in the United Statesand five in other countries as it works tomove production closer to where its equip-ment will be sold.

It said its sales in the developing worldremain at or near record levels, though itssales in North America and Europe remaindepressed.

“While sales rose, they are still far belowprevious highs with room to improve as eco-nomic growth and construction activitypicks up. New machine sales in the U.S., forexample, are still less than half their priorpeak which was in 2006,” said MikeDeWalt, the company’s director of investorrelations.

The company predicts a 2011 profit ofnearly $6 per share on more than $50 billionin sales. Analysts are expecting $5.84 a shareon $48.6 billion.

“I just think the company is well-posi-tioned from a long-term growth perspec-tive,” Windau said.

For all of 2010 Caterpillar reported netincome of $2.7 billion, or $4.15 per share, onrevenue of $42.6 billion. That’s considerablybetter than the previous year’s $895 millionnet income, or $1.43 per share, on revenue of$32.4 billion.

Dynapac Debuts NewSeries of LF ForwardCompaction Plates

Dynapac’s new series of LF for-ward compaction plates featureimproved speed, flexibility and per-formance. The LF 50 (110-lb. [50kg] class) and the LF 60 (132-lb. [60kg] class) are ideal for small soil jobsand narrow trenches. In the 286-lb.(130 kg) class, the LF 130 isdesigned for heavy-duty soil applica-tions and has the highest compactionperformance in the Dynapac range.

Engineered for soil applicationsand available with a number ofoptions to customize the plates, thenew models are approximately 20percent faster than their predeces-sors, according to the manufacturer.

The LF series is equipped withDynapac’s Low-Vib handle, whichreduces exposure to hand-arm trans-mitted vibrations and increases oper-ator comfort. For tight spaces, thehandle is aligned with the center ofthe plate for easy maneuverability. The handle can be raised to a ver-tical operationalposition, andthen easilyfolded fortransportationand storage.

All modelsoffer a widevariety ofo p t i o n a l

equipment such as lifting handles, block paving kits and a protectionframe suitable for rental applications, all of which makes it possible to cus-tomize the machine. On the soil ver-sions, a company can put its ownbranding on the cover.

All three models feature a Hondaengine, and the LF 130 also can bespecial ordered with aHatz engine.Field kits areavailable.

Through the SMART drum technology, each ofthese HFA compactors can be used for a wide rangeof applications.

These high-frequency compactors are engineeredwith eight amplitude settings. Each amplitude set-ting is automatically adjusted to the highest frequen-cy for that amplitude selection. This enables theoperator to use lower amplitudes with higher fre-quency on thinner lifts to increase productivity withdecreased risk of damage to aggregate structure orsub-grade, and higher amplitude with lower fre-quency on thicker lifts and stiffer materials. Thisflexibility once required two separate compactors;Volvo technology enables one compactor to provideboth ends of the spectrum in performance.

Other SMART technologies designed into thesethree compactors include:

• SMART vibration system, which automaticallyadjusts vibration frequency for both drums to thedesign frequency for the given amplitude

• SMART propulsion system automatically con-trols rolling speed for optimum drum impact spac-ing

• SMART water system not only shuts off waterspray whenever the compactor stops moving, butalso automatically regulates water-flow rates tomatch rolling speed

• SMART start, which prevents vibration of thetrailing drum on cold or hard pavement surfaces atthe beginning of each paving operation, or at trans-verse joints on bridges or junctions with PCC pave-ment panels

Making an ImpactThese compactors are designed to keep up with

pavers moving at faster lay-down speeds whilemaintaining appropriate drum impact spacing, reducing the need for additional compactors on thejob, according to the manufacturer.

The impact meter measures the relationshipbetween the compactor’s vibration frequency and itsrolling speed to accurately indicate the number of

Volvo HFA Compactors OfferSMART Drum Technologydrum impacts per foot. The operator is ableto precisely control the optimal rolling speedfor the desired drum impact spacing using aneasy-to-read, color-coded gauge. This sys-tem allows for increased productivity undera wider range of operating conditions.

Smooth OperationAnother Volvo performance advantage is

chamfered, radiused edges on the drums. This minimizes drum marking and main-tains smooth surfaces as the roller makes itspasses.

The drum wetting system is available onall models. The dual water spray systemincorporates primary and secondary spraycomponents. Each drum has independentwater storage tanks and two water pumps, two primary filters, separate water distribu-tion lines and two spray bars with hand-serv-iceable nozzles.

Better drum surface coverage and reducedmisting is achieved with 10 nozzles on eachDD118HFA spray bar; the DD138HFAspray bars are fitted with 12 nozzles each.

Two 164-gal. (620 L) water tanks are moni-tored by the illuminated water-level indica-tor.

In its highest amplitude setting, theDD118HFA has a maximum centrifugalforce of 42,070 lbs. (187.1 kN). Vibrationfrequency ranges from 3,000 to 4,200 vibra-tions per minute (50 to 70 hertz); and themaximum nominal amplitude is 0.031 in.(.08 cm). The machine has an operatingweight of 27,670 lbs. (12,548 kg). TheDD118HFA is powered by a turbochargedand charge air-cooled Cummins 148-hp (110kw) engine.

The DD138HFA has a maximum cen-trifugal force of 41,720 lbs. (186 kN) in itshighest frequency setting. Vibration frequen-cy ranges from 2,700 to 4,000 vibrations perminute (45 to 66.7 hertz); and the maximumnominal amplitude is 0.035 in. (.08 cm). Themachine has an operating weight of 30,325lbs. (13,752 kg). A Cummins turbochargedand charge air-cooled 173-hp (129 kw)engine provides the compactor’s power.

WHILE SOME PEOPLE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM GRASPING THE CONCEPT,THEY’RE SURE NOT HAVING ANY DIFFICULTY GRABBING THE RESULTS.

It’s a rubber tire roller that vibrates with enough centrifugal force to equal the out-put of a 55,000 pound pneumatic. The GW750 handles the toughest HMA mixeswith ease, getting balanced high densities from the top through the bottom of themat. Great on SMA, too! And it provides a sound interlock between new overlaysand profiled surfaces. It’s bonus time!

Calif. Contractors Tackle Roadway Washout on SR 330Creek.

The hole goes completely under both lanes of SR-330 inthat location.

Besides the roadway washout, landslides or culvert fail-ures occurred in five different areas along SR-330.

“The culverts have been there a long time and they’reold,” said Raymond Wolfe, director of Caltrans District 8,adding many of the damaged culverts aren’t on the surface— rather they’re 80 ft. (24 m) underground.

Following initial clearing of debris from the roadway andinspection of the damage by Caltrans, An emergency repairproject to restore the highway has been under way.

In early January, Caltrans awarded Skanska a $6 millioncontract for Phase I of the emergency repair work.

As part of this phase, Skanska worked around the clock toexcavate the downward lane and rebuild the cavern carvedunder the roadbed —caused by the washout — and repairculverts at other locations in the lower section of the dam-aged highway.

“The work in Phase I also prepared the roadway to allowaccess for equipment to begin work at the major slide,” saidDarin Cooke, public information officer of Caltrans District8, adding this was accomplished by using material from theupbound lane to backfill the hole.

During Phase I, Skanska utilized a variety of standardroadway construction equipment including Caterpillarhydraulic excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, scrapers, trucks, backhoes and light towers.

In late January, Skanska was awarded a contract for PhaseII work, which is the primary portion of the emergencyrepair efforts.

Phase II focuses on repairing the damage above the majorroadway washout.

The phase will pioneer a road down to the City Creekstreambed where Skanska will begin constructing a rock boltwall — effectively carving a new alignment against themountainside to create access for equipment to cross thelarge slide, according to Cooke.

Phase II is estimated at $10 million to $12 million depend-ing on mitigation requirements for the yellow legged frog,

which could cost up to $1.5 million. The slide occurred in thehabitat of the frogs, which are a federally listed endangeredspecies.

As part of the long-range project to repair the roadwaywashout location, Caltrans will use dirt that roared down intothe creek when the area collapsed.

Caltrans will not be importing any dirt for the reconstruc-tion project, as the transportation agency does not want tointroduce any (non-native) plants or vegetation into the area. The location of the complete roadway washout is part of theSan Bernardino National Forest and is overseen by the U.S.Forest Service.

Phase III of the emergency repair project has yet to beawarded and will consist of culvert/slide repair, and com-

plete restoration of the roadway where the washout occurred. At this time, Phase III is in the planning and approvalprocess.

SR-330 will likely be closed for all of 2011. CEG

REPAIRS from page 1

A Caterpillar scraper and hydraulic excavator work along SR-330.A Caterpillar hydraulic excavator moves dirt from a roadway turnoff near thelarge washout site.

The road washout — caused by a severe storm onDec. 20, 2010 — will close SR-330 for a year.

Contractors will set a new culvert and backfill usingslurry and material from the upbound lane to fill thehole.

The ground beneath the roadway washout locationmay not be finished sliding, as several cracks in theasphalt indicate the ground underneath the largeslide is unstable.

Alex Lyon & Son Kicks Off Annual Florida AuctionsAlex Lyon & Son kicked off the annual

Florida Auctions in Kissimmee, Fla.

Alex Lyon’s sale ran from Jan. 29 to Feb. 6.Quite possibly its largest equipment auctionever, Alex Lyon featured earthmoving equip-ment, aerial lifts, forklifts, dump trucks, trucktrailers, trailers, support equipment and attach-ments. The equipment was gathered from thebest authorized dealer rental fleets across thecountry, including Neff, RSC, Genie, JCB,JLG, Sunbelt, Hertz and Caterpillar.

The bidding at this year’s Florida auctionswas brisk. The combined effects of low dealerinventories, reduced manufacturing levels, increased demand domestically and overseashas made the market for late-hour used con-struction equipment in the United States verystrong.

Two industry legends — John LaCamera (L), founderof Contractors Equipment Guide, and Jim Davis, presi-dent of Davis Auctions. LaCamera and Davis try tokeep a stiff upper lip despite the fact that the Patriotsdid not play in the Super Bowl.

Steve Debaun, Track II Corp., keeps track of what theexcavators were going for at the annual Alex Lyon &Son sale.

This John Deere 650J dozer got the attention of ToddSummers of Summers Enterprise.

Excavators attracted a large number of bidders fromacross the world. Both excavators and articulated trucksbrought good numbers, signaling some improvement in theconstruction equipment market.

Wheeling and dealing via cell phone is Dean Adsit of NortraxUsed Equipment Sales.

For more than 35 years, Jack Lyon has led Alex Lyon & Son Inc. to the position ofbeing among the leading construction equipment auction houses in the world.

JCB takes advantage of the large number of contractors from across the worldgathered at the Alex Lyon & Son sale to display its latest models of earthmovingequipment.
