Take The Bait

It was a cold winter day, when an old man walked out onto a frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice, dropped in his fishing line and

began waiting for a fish to bite.

He was there for almost an hour without even a nibble when a young boy walked out onto the ice, cut a hole in the ice not too

far from the old man and dropped in his fishing line. It only took about a minute and WHAM! a Largemouth Bass hit his hook

and the boy pulled in the fish.

The old man couldn't believe it but figured it was just luck. But, the boy dropped in his line and again within just a few min-

utes pulled in another one.

This went on and on until finally the old man couldn't take it any more since he hadn't caught a thing all this time.

He went to the boy and said, "Son, I've been here for over an hour without even a nibble. You have been here only a few min-

utes and have caught about half a dozen fish! How do you do it?"

The boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rrarm."

"What was that?" the old man asked.

Again the boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rarrm."

"Look," said the old man, "I can't understand a word you are saying."

So, the boy spit into his hand and said, "You have to keep the worms warm!"

A Fishing Lure

A couple of young boys were fishing at their special pond off the beaten track. All of a sudden, the Game Warden jumped out

of the bushes.

Immediately, one of the boys threw his rod down and started running through the woods like a bat out of hell. The Game

Warden was hot on his heels.

After about a half mile, the young man stopped and stooped over with his hands on his thighs to catch his breath, so the

Game Warden finally caught up to him.

"Let's see yer fishin' license, Boy!" the Warden gasped.

With that, the boy pulled out his wallet and gave the Game Warden a valid fishing license.

"Well, son," said the Game Warden. "You must be about as dumb as a box of rocks! You don't have to run from me if you

have a valid license!"

"Yes, sir," replied the young guy. "But my friend back there, well, he don't have one.

The Prez Sez

Christmas has passed and I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. The New Year is

sure to bring some new challenges.

I want to start by thanking everyone for your support. As our new president, I would like

to share with you a few feelings I have for the year ahead. First, I think we should all look

forward to haveing fun as members of our great club. Second, I would hope we would all

look forward to learning new things about our sport of fishing. Third, I think socializing

with present and new members should be near the top of our list, both at our club meet-

ing and through the many events scheduled this year. The truth is, the more you get in-

volved, the more fun you’re going to have.

As a club member you can be proud of the fact that you belong to one of the largest and most active fishing clubs

in our state and country. This all happens because of you and your interest in our sport of fishing. Keep up the

great work.

January through March are our big show months. Your club needs your support and help to staff the various

shows in which we participate. Get involved and meet some interesting people at these shows. Remember, you

were a new member once, and maybe a little shy at the beginning. New people are waiting to be asked to get in-

volved; let’s help them out. Why not get a hold of Jim Roberson and get started with an hour or two at The Ulti-

mate Fishing Show?

I want to have a little something different at each of our monthly meetings this year; two five minute seminars.

One seminar will be on a little fishing tip, and the second on boat handling or safety. The key will be short, sweet,

and informative.

Once again, I look forward to your support and assistance to make our club bigger and a little better in the coming

year.

Fish On

MWS MEMBERSHIP MEETING

SPEAKERS JANUARY 4, 2011 GARY TOWNS, of Michigan DNRE:

At the Metro West Steelheaders meeting on January 4, Gary Towns, Michigan DNRE, will be giving a pres-

entation on the walleye situation in Lake Erie and a new way to determine the daily limit for walleye each

year. Specifically, anglers will not know how many walleye they can keep per day on Lake Erie this sum-

mer until AFTER the end of March. The Fishing Guide (rule book), printed in January each year, will no

longer state the daily limit of walleye for Lake Erie – but rather it will direct anglers to the DNR computer

website or other sources for current information on the subject. This is all being done so that the walleye

population can be managed with information which is as recent as possible. In the past, Michigan, Ohio,

Ontario and other states which manage Lake Erie have had to forecast over a year in advance as to what

they think the walleye population will be…and set regulations accordingly. Now, they will be able to man-

age with much more current fishery information and tailor the walleye harvest (with regulations) to the

ups and downs of the walleye population. Gary will present a power point presentation and take ques-

tions from the audience.

Gary L. Towns holds BS and MS Masters degrees from Central Michigan University. He has been working

with the State of Michigan for over 30 years - first with the Michigan Dept of Agriculture - but primarily

(since 1982) with the Fisheries Division of the Dept of Natural Resources. He's worked out of DNR offices

in Plainwell, Jackson, Haslett, Perry, Livonia and is now in Southfield where he is presently the supervisor

of the Lake Erie Management Unit [which covers about a 10 county area in SE Lower Michigan - including

Lake St. Clair, the connecting waters and Lake Erie]. For several years, Gary served as Michigan's repre-

sentative on the Great Lakes Fishery Commission's Lake Erie Committee, and was the chair of that com-

mittee for two years.

Bugsy, of Bugsy’s Baits, will display his lures and will offer them for sale to MWS members at a discounted

rate.

FEBRUARY 1, 2011, TBD

Metro West Steelheaders Christmas Party 2010

A smashing good time

That’s what we all had

At the Club Christmas party

It wasn’t at all bad.

Santa’s helpers were busy

With table and chair

As the Curbey’s were preparing the chicken and ham

And Tom, Dave and Witte were doing their share.

The pres. gave a welcome

Dominic said a prayer

And the dinner was served

To everyone there.

The children were anxious

The gifts were all wrapped

And along came old Santa

And everyone clapped.

Santa’s line was so long

But each child got a toy

And pictures were taken

Of each girl and boy.

The captain of the year

And crewmen as well

Were then introduced

Their jackets looked swell.

Don’t let me forget

Our river angler was there

With his brand new jacket

So handsome to wear.

And a special award

For our Member of the Year

Was given to Captain Marty Drum

Who received a plaque and a rousing cheer.

The lure tree was a hit

Cooler raffles were won

Karen sold some pickles

And we all had great fun.

And last but not least

It surprised one and all

I was given a plaque

Merry Christmas to all!

Christmas Party Report by Jim Robertson

Where should I start? Thanks to all. Thanks to Mitch and Deb Curbey for preparing the main course for our Christmas dinner. Thanks to Tom Taylor, Dave Sgromolo, Ron Witte, and others, sorry if I forgot anyone, for setting up the hall and taking it down again. Thanks to Karen Westphal who did a wonderful job with the table centerpieces. They will be used again next year. Marty Drum as always ran the 50/50 raffle. Thanks to Lance Hinatsu, (who won the lure tree last year), and sold over $100.00 worth of tickets in addition to the lures placed on the tree this year. Congratulations Phil Jackson, this year’s lure tree winner.

Phil Bustos, King of the cooler raffles, had his three coolers set up for inspection filled to overflowing with goodies. The cooler winners are as follows:

Did anyone else see something fishy about cooler #3? Con-gratulations to all. See you next year.

The Captain and Crewmen of the Year awards were presented by Henry Nabors. Captain Joel Nelson is our 2010 Captain of the Year; and Phil Drum is our 2010 Crewman of the Year. Each received a heavy jacket with the Steelheaders logo embroidered on the back and their name and boat name embroidered on the front. Congratulations to Joel and Phil!

Phil Bustos then presented our first ever River Angler award, which was won by Matt Benuska. Matt also received a heavy jacket with the Steelheaders logo embroidered on

the back and his name and boat name embroidered on the front. Congratulations Matt!

The highlight of the evening for me was having the honor of presenting Captain Marty Drum the Member of the Year plaque. The MWS member of the year award is presented at the discretion of the president to acknowledge and honor the Club member who has exhibited exemplary energy and dedication to the Club goals, purpose and policies as listed in the

Club By-Laws. He will also have displayed his leadership by participating in the many Club Tournaments, outings and activities as well as Club leader-ship. Congratulations Marty! We are a better club because you are a mem-ber of Metro West Steelheaders.

Last of all, but not least to me, I was honored by the Board of Directors with a plaque for my service as MWS president from 2008-2010. Thank you very much and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

2011 Best Fishing Days (Farmers Almanac),

when the Moon is between new and full (EDT).

The Sun, Moon, tides, and weather all influence fish activity. For example, fish tend to feed more at sunrise and sunset. During a full moon, tides are higher than average and fish tend to feed more. However, most of us go fishing when we can get the time off, not because it is the best time!

Best Times for Fishing

♦ One hour before and one hour after high tides, and one hour before and one hour after low tides. Inland, the times for high tides correspond with the times when the Moon is due south. Low tides are halfway between high tides.\

♦ During the "morning rise" (after sunup for a spell) and the "evening rise" (just before sundown and the hour or so after).

♦ When the barometer is steady or on the rise. (But even during stormy periods, the fish aren't going to give up feeding. The smart fisherman will find just the right bait.)

♦ When there is a hatch of flies—caddis flies or mayflies, commonly. (The fisherman will have to match his fly with the hatching flies or go fishless.)

♦ When the breeze is from a westerly quarter rather than from the north or east.

♦ When the water is still or rippled, rather than during a wind. Research by Renee Lubaway, Editor’s Spouse

old and under will be visited by Santa. The bylaws state that a member, who has paid his dues, his spouse and all children under 18 years of age are

considered members. Only the member will have voting rights. Due to space limitations, at this party, we are limiting the number of people from each

member to 5. The board will review the Christmas party for next year to try to find a place for the party which will accommodate all who wish to come.

Bob Olari made a motion to limit the party to 220 people with 5 members from each family allowed to attend. This will be on a first come basis with

reservations. Motions seconded by Henry Nabors. Motion passed.

MSSFA State Board Meeting 11/10/2010 Notes

At the beginning of the meeting, a motion was made and passed to extend lifetime membership in MSSFA to past

Executive Director Andy Pelt.

In state chapter news, the Central (Mt. Pleasant) and Benzie chapters, have folded. The Manistee chapter is barely

holding on and needs members. Traverse City may form a chapter if it can generate enough interest. If you fish in

Manistee or the Traverse City areas often, consider joining there as an associate member. A chapter needs a mini-

mum of 10 members to remain affiliated with MSSFA.

As for now, the EPA has backed off on a plan to ban lead in ammo and fishing tackle. Michigan Sea Grant is pro-

ducing watershed maps which will be available online at www.miseagrant.umich.edu/store at a cost of $10 each.

A motion was made to confirm Dennis Eade as Executive Director of MSSFA and was passed. Dennis was also con-

firmed as the ad director for the Great Lakes Sport Fishing News. Dennis Eade has filed 4 reports from meetings

he attended. Those reports are on our website on the Conservation page. These provide a much more complete

account than can be provided here. Thanks to Dennis for providing these reports.

At the state level, Jim Vander Maas is our Tribal Chairman and deals with issues like net locations and tribal fish-

ing. Jim would like to know if you have had any problems with tribal nets in the Lake Michigan waters north of

Grand Haven. Jim is allowed to tag along with law enforcement on these investigations. You can contact Jim at

[email protected].

MSSFA is planning a legislative night in April or May to meet with as many of the new

and current lawmakers. Between now and then, we at Metro West will work to come up

with a list of the issues which are most important to us.

Final note – the Mid-Michigan Chapter is having their one day sport fishing show on Feb-

ruary 19th from 9:00am-8:00pm at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason. Admission

is $5, kids under 12 free and free parking.

Lenard Pietila, State Director Metro West

MSSFA Report

Announcement of Election Results, Lenard Pietila

December 4, 2010 meeting announcement of recent election results by Lenard Pietila –

I’m going to announce the results of the recent election and introduce the new directors and officers. Starting with the Board

of Directors, the two new directors are Greg Ruggles and Jim Drews with Mitch Curbey as the alternate. Thanks to outgoing

directors Marty Drum and Mark Platt for their service on the board. Dave Sgromolo will serve as the club representative to

the MUCC which is a new board position and is a 3 year term. Thanks go to John Wright and Art Dittmar who held this posi-

tion for the club previously. Henry Nabors will continue as membership secretary for another 3 year term. Lenard Pietila will

continue as the MSSFA state director.

For club officers, Carmen Zirles will continue as treasurer. Mark Platt will take over as secretary. Thanks to Bob Olari the

outgoing secretary. At president and vice-president, we have a swap taking place with President Jim Robertson taking over

as vice-president and current Vice-President Clyde Schoen will now be president of Metro West. Thanks and congratulations

to both.

At this time I’d like to present to President Jim Robertson, on behalf of the board and members of Metro West this plaque
