$415M Bond Package...

Storm Shelter ConstructionBegins on Tulsa SchoolsTULSA, Okla. (AP) Construction is

under way at the first of 20 Tulsa-areaschools receiving new classrooms or libraryadditions that double as storm shelters.A $415 million bond package that Tulsa

voters approved of in 2015 includes $7.5million to reinforce new building additionsas storm shelters at 20 schools, the TulsaWorld reported. Springdale Elementary isscheduled to be the first to have a completedaddition around November.Springdale’s new classroom addition

includes six-inch-thick, concrete walls and anew roof. Bullet-proof glass on exterior win-dows and doors will also be added to the$4.5 million building project.“When I came here three years ago, one of

the first things I did was call our emergencymanagement director to come walk thebuilding with me because student safety is ofutmost concern to me all the time,” saidRebecca Bacon, Springdale’s principal.“Even our bathrooms have windows inthem, so there aren’t a lot of places away

from glass. In tornado drills, most of our stu-dents go to interior hallways and we putsome pre-K kids in a storage room.”Schools that were selected for the addi-

tions had outgrown their permanent struc-tures and resorted to trailers and other tem-porary buildings. As a result of the new shel-ters, 80 of Tulsa Public Schools’ 120 class-room trailers will be removed.Springdale will become the city’s sixth

school with a new shelter. Five others recent-ly received them from a voter-approvedbond fund from a 2010 election.“Knowing that I will have a place where

all my students would fit and be safe if a tor-nado were to occur during the day is arelief,” Bacon said. For more information, visit

As Memorial Visits Oklahoma, ODOT Worker KilledA transportation memorial with

names of fallen OklahomaDepartment of Transportationworkers came to life. Memoriesand reflections of the lives theylived were illuminated by lovedones who spoke at an opening cer-emony for a six-day exhibit thatwas displayed May 13 to 22.Families who spoke at a press

conference at Penn Square Mallreminded motorists that their cau-tion in a work zone could save lives.“We do not want any more fam-

ilies to know the immeasurablesuffering that comes after the lossof a loved one in a work zone,”said Mike Patterson, ODOT exec-utive director. “By staying alert, slowing down and putting awaydistractions when entering high-way work zones, Oklahoma driv-ers can help us eliminate the needto add any more names to thisnational memorial.”Thirteen people lost their lives

in Oklahoma work zones in 2015,including two ODOT employees. In total, 84 people have died in thepast five years in Oklahoma workzones, the majority of themmotorists. The top three causes offatal collisions, according to stateaccident data, are following tooclose, traveling at unsafe speedsand driver inattention. All 59 of ODOT’s fallen work-

some close calls while workingnext to traffic in Oklahoma high-way work zones along U.S.-69 inMcIntosh County. But it’s the lossof his brother and co-worker in awork zone collision in 2012 thatmotivates him to ask Oklahomadrivers to help eliminate one of themost preventable causes of death.“There’s a lot of traffic on our

highways,” said Vandiver, anOklahoma Department ofTransportation employee for 38years. “Our world is moving fast.People may not be paying attentionto the road signs as they enter workzones, but we really need them to.It’s a really hazardous situation forus and them.”Other speakers urged motorists

Cat Designs Work Tools for Easy Snow RemovalCaterpillar unveiled work tools

designed to manage snow removalin the harshest weather conditions. The material handling bucket andstraight snow push ensure a safe andreliable snow removal process whileincreasing efficiency and decreasingtime on the job, according to themanufacturer. The attachments convert a Cat

skid steer, compact track, multi-ter-rain, compact wheel, backhoe andsmall wheel loaders into a clearingpowerhouse regardless of the sea-son.

102 In. Material Handling Bucket

The material handling bucket, model 2591, is the largest (width, height and capacity) offered in thebucket family. Capable of carryingup to 1.7 cu. yds. (1.3 cu m) of mate-rial at a time, the bucket is ideal forremoving snow from roadways, parking lots and sidewalks. Not onlyis the bucket built for winter condi-tions, it is actually a cross-overbetween snow and agriculture appli-cations. It can be used year round inlight material, high capacity applica-tions such as handling mulch, dirt orrock. The new designs enhance the

safety and durability of the machineproviding an optimal operator expe-rience. The honeycomb design atthe top gives the operator a greatview of the amount of snow in thebucket for maximum capacity, andallows for more material retentionwithout taking away line of sight tothe edge and corners of the bucket. An integrated built-in step withmetal grating makes it much easierto safely enter and exit the machine,

as the improved grating improvesgrip in wet weather. Also, the reversible and replace-

able bolt-on cutting edge ensurescomplete contact with the groundfor maximum snow removal, whilethe torque tube increases rigidity forwet, heavy loads of snow, accordingto the manufacturer.

Cat Straight Snow Push Removing snow from any sur-

face is safely and efficiently com-pleted with various widths of theCat snow pushes. The cutting edges, available in steel or rubber, aredesigned for moving snow in a widerange of applications. The pushesreach down to the surface andremove as much snow as possible, while the additional bolt on backdrag feature allows for a straightpush to pull material away from astructure. A spring loaded trip edge with

tension adjustment allows the Catsnow pushes to protect themselvesand the machine from obstacles thatare encountered when pushing snowand ice; for example, when plowinga road and coming upon an elevatedman hole cover, the unit will raiseup instead of impacting the coverdirectly. The adjustable skid main-tains a constant cutting edge heightpreferred by the operator. The Cat straight snow pushes are

ideal for snow removal contractorsclearing large parking lots, roads, and other paved surfaces. For more information, visit

The year also marked the first time theAbilene branch featured a Guild Awardee.Randy Dennis, recipient of the award inAbilene, spoke on the journey the Abilenebranch has taken to get to this level.

“Since Kirby-Smith acquired thebranch, the business has grown and wehave learned to move at a much quickerpace,” said Dennis. “We have even hadto add staff to keep up with the demand.Programs like the Guild help make surethat we take care of our customers theright way, and I think that will continueto drive our growth in the future.”

To become a member of the Guild, the company requires each participantto attend more than 40 hours of techni-cal training each year and score 100percent on quarterly exams. Tom

Montgomery, vice president ofCustomer Care, spoke to the impor-tance of the Guild Program.

“If we do not strive for the highestlevel of professional expertise, then wewill fail to provide the highest level ofservice to our customers,” saidMontgomery. “The Guild Program is away to honor our parts and servicetechnicians who work to grow theirknowledge and experience, so thatKirby-Smith can continue its great tra-dition of providing exceptional serviceto our customers.”

The Guild Program is managed byJay VanDuzer, product trainer, who isquick to praise the benefits the Guildhas brought Kirby-Smith, as well asthe dedication of his Guild members.

“The Guild Program is a win-win-win,” said VanDuzer. “The customerwins by receiving a more knowledge-able technician who is able to accu-rately diagnose and repair the equip-ment the first time. Kirby-Smith winsby providing the best service and partssupport for our customers. Finally, ourtechnicians win by increasing theirknowledge, as well as receiving mod-est monetary recognition for theirefforts. Our parts personnel and techni-cians commit a significant amount of

their ‘off-time’ towards improvingtheir knowledge and skill, reflectingthe professional standards expected ofKirby-Smith employees. Kirby-Smithtruly has a very high quality ofemployees and our Guild membersrepresent the best of the best.”

UNTIMED POWER BOOST: STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULEWe know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock. The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

Mack mDRIVE HD Now Standard on Granite ModelsIn response to increasing customer

demand, Mack Trucks announced its MackmDRIVE HD 13-speed automated manualtransmission (AMT) will be standard onMack Granite models. Featuring a low ratiocreeper gear, the mDRIVE HD 13-speedhelps boost customer productivity dueto improved performance andreduced weight, according to themanufacturer.Mack is the first truck manu-

facturer in North America tooffer low reduction creepergear ratios in a proprietaryautomated manual trans-mission. Since Mackannounced the availabil-ity of the mDRIVE HD13-speed in March, cus-tomer response has beenoverwhelmingly positive, encouraging Mack to make the13-speed AMT standard on theGranite model starting with pro-duction of the 2017 MP8 engine. The mDRIVE HD 13-speed also isavailable on Mack Pinnacle and Titan byMack models.“Making the mDRIVE HD 13-speed

standard on the Granite is a natural evolutionof our industry leadership,” said DennisSlagle, president of Mack Trucks. “Since itsintroduction, the mDRIVE has becomeincredibly popular — starting first with high-way and more recently with many heavy-duty vocational applications. The introduc-tion of the 13- and 14-speed gears expandsthe range and performance in vocationalapplications so much so that it is only natu-ral for it to become our standard offering inthe Granite model.”Available in direct or overdrive configura-

tions, the new Mack mDRIVE HD 13-speedoffers a low reduction creeper gear ratiodesigned for easier startability on steepgrades or when the truck is carrying a heavyload. This improved startability also allows

customers to select a faster rear axle ratio. The faster ratio decreases engine rpm athighway speeds, saving fuel as the trucktravels between job sites. The mDRIVE HD 13-speed, like all

Mack mDRIVE AMTs, is monitored byMack GuardDog Connect and serviceable atmore than

400 Mack dealers. GuardDog Connect isMack’s proactive diagnostic and repair plan-ning system. It monitors fault codes thatcould potentially shut down a truck or lead toan unplanned visit to the dealer. GuardDogConnect enables quick diagnosis of issues, proactive scheduling for repairs and confir-mation that needed parts are in stock andready to install, all while the truck is still onthe job.The Mack mDRIVE HD 13-speed shares

its architecture with the standard mDRIVEHD, including reinforced internal compo-nents and the same gear ratios for the 12 for-ward speeds.Mack also announced in March the avail-

ability of the mDRIVE HD 14-speed. Theaddition of the two transmissions with creep-er gears enables Mack to meet the needs of a

wider range of customer applications withthe power and performance that only a fullyintegrated powertrain can offer. MackmDRIVE AMTs are available exclusivelywith Mack MP engines.Due to the new low reduction creeper

gears, the mDRIVE HD 13- and 14-speed

trans-missions

not onlyimprove performance in

off-road, heavy haul and construction appli-cations, but also for on-highway applica-tions, according to the manufacturer. Mack now offers both new mDRIVE HD

variants in Mack Pinnacle models. The addition of the low reduction creeper

and multispeed reverse gears is made possi-ble by a short extension added to the front ofthe transmission case. Despite the additionalcapabilities, the new mDRIVE HD modelsare less than 5 in. (12.7 cm) longer and only90 lbs. (40.8 kg) heavier than the standardmDRIVE HD, maintaining a weight advan-tage of nearly 150 lbs. (68 kg) comparedwith automatic transmissions. The Mack mDRIVE HD 14-speed, avail-

able only in an overdrive configuration, addsa second ultra-low-speed reduction geardesigned for curb pouring applications or

low-speed, heavy-haul maneuvering. Bothtransmissions offer up to four reverse gearratios. In addition to the two new models, all

Mack mDRIVE transmissions, including thestandard mDRIVE and mDRIVE HD,received numerous updates for improvedperformance and durability. The transmis-sions are controlled by a redesigned gearboxcontrol unit, while a new clutch with a larg-er torsional damper helps reduce drivelinevibration. Component wear monitors alsowere added to enable predictive mainte-nance.“Response to the mDRIVE and mDRIVE

HD has been tremendous,” said Roy Horton, director of product strategy. “Currently,mDRIVE penetration for Pinnacle axle backand axle forward models is at approximately80 percent and 60 percent, respectively, while mDRIVE HD penetration for Granitemodels is about 20 percent and growing. Thepenetration level of mDRIVE in all ourmodels has continued to increase since itsintroduction.”Available in axle forward or axle back

configurations, the Mack Granite modeldelivers the reliability, durability andstrength expected of a Mack. The high-per-forming, fuel-efficient Mack MP7 and MP8engines range from 325 hp and 1,200 lb.-ft.of torque to up to 505 hp and 1,760 lb.-ft. oftorque. XL Specialized Trailers Introduces XL 90 BlademateXL Specialized Trailers launched a brand

new trailer with the introduction of the XL90 Blademate. Anticipating continuedgrowth for the wind market, XL committedto providing a premium solution for haulingwind turbine blades safely and efficiently, resulting in the new trailer. The longer the trailer, the more difficult it

can be to control the rear of it, which makes itdifficult for hauling wind blades due to theirlength. The XL Blademate features a uniqueself-steering system in which the axles auto-matically rotate to keep the trailer behind thetruck at all times; the kingpin rotates andprompts the axles to track with it usinghydraulic cylinders. An override remoteallows drivers to take full control as needed.Rated at 90,000 lbs. (40,823 kg) overall,

the XL 90 Blademate is 53-ft. (16 m) longwhen closed and 184 ft. 2 in. (56 m) whenfully extended. The telescoping main framefeatures XL’s trusted extendable technology, using 6-in. (15 cm) greasable double rollersto extend and retract smoothly. Once extend-ed to 124 ft. (38 m), the trailer has stopsevery 18 in. (45.7 cm), up to full extension.A 20-ft. (6 m) pullout bumper on the rearalso is on rollers, allowing for hassle-freeextension. The bumper has stops every 24 in.(61 cm). Additionally, a double lock system

secures the set-up.The trailer is prepped for deck inserts,

which enables a length of more than 200 ft.(61 m) overall. Adjustable non-rolling bunksare situated on the main deck customizableto the customers’ needs. The 24-in. longbunks can be moved across 40 ft. (12 m) ofthe main beam, providing adjustable loadingareas based on the size and shape of the windturbine blade. The fixed bunks are movedwith a forklift while the rolling bunks slidesmoothly and quickly into position onrollers. 20-in. (51 cm) steel loading plat-forms at both the front and rear of the trailer

provide tie down areas.XL has taken safety into consideration in

a variety of ways on the Blademate. A bea-con located on the side toolbox of the trailersilluminates when the axles turn out of align-ment 3 degrees or more, which is useful foralerting other vehicles that the trailer is mak-ing a turn, and to allow the driver and pilotcar to monitor any unplanned axle rotation, therefore preventing accidents. Furthermore, three red/green indicator lights signal, toboth the driver and pilot car, if the power unitis on or off. A large work light on the goose-neck shines 1,200 lumens rearward, right

where users will need it to load, unload orcheck the load in the dark. “Our goal is always to provide a solution

that makes drivers jobs easier and safer,”said Rodney Crim, vice president of sales ofXL Specialized Trailers. “We are excited toprovide this advanced hauling solution forthe wind industry with the new XLBlademate.”For more information, visit xlspecialized-

Truck Bodies & Equipment InternationalInc. (TBEI) has announced that its LakeCrystal facility has achieved ISO 9001:2015Certification. The recognition makes theTBEI Lake Crystal facility one of the onlydump body manufacturers in the UnitedStates to achieve this level of certification. The certification comes just three years afterthe facility was awarded the ISO 9001:2008certification. The TBEI Lake Crystal facilitymanufactures the Crysteel, J-Craft and OxSuperDump products.

“This is truly a significant accomplish-ment, magnified by the fact that the facilityachieved ISO 9001:2008 certification onlythree years ago,” said Bob Fines, TBEI pres-ident and CEO. “To achieve this next level ofcertification is very impressive. Less thanone percent of companies in the UnitedStates are ISO certified, and as one of theonly dump body manufacturers in the coun-try to obtain this level of certification, we areextremely proud of our Lake Crystal facilityand pleased to continue providing our cus-

Talbert Spread-Axle Trailer With E2Nitro Adds VersatilityThe 65-ton (59 t) spread-axle

trailer outfitted with the E2Nitronitrogen-assisted equalizing sys-tem by Talbert Manufacturing pro-vides haulers the versatility theyneed to switch axle configurationsand comply with individual stateroad regulations. This trailer alsocan be operated in a 70-ton (63.5 t)close-coupled configuration.Haulers can use the 65SA with a

close-coupled fourth axle for a 70-ton rating or a spread-axle configu-ration for a 65-ton rating, and thetrailer’s empty weight is lightercompared to West Coast-style trail-ers. The trailer’s East Coast-styleE2Nitro spreader features a bear-ing pivot and pivot lockout forbacking the trailer. In addition, theE2Nitro operator can hydraulicallyset axle loads and keep them therein all terrains. It also allows for a14-ft. 1-in. (4.3 m) spread betweenthe third and fourth axle, which isideal for haulers traveling intostates that require that spread. The E2Nitro system articulates

left and right and uses nitrogen to

equalize the up and down move-ment to provide proportionateweight distribution in each axlegrouping. Through a combinationof hydraulic and nitrogen equaliza-tion, the E2Nitro absorbs haulingand loading shocks and provides agreater range of suspension move-ment for reduced stress and asmoother ride. The system alsoacts as a hydraulic shim pointbetween trailer and spreader. TheE2Nitro also incorporates two-speed dual landing gear for greater

stability when it is disconnectedfrom the trailer. Finally, the 65SAwith the E2Nitro makes movementon job sites easier because opera-tors can lift rear axles when back-ing up or turning around. The Talbert 65SA features a 70-

in. (178 cm), flip-up gooseneckextension to achieve a 190-in. (482cm) radius. The unit also offersremovable kingpin stations for120- and 108-in. (305 and 274 cm)swing radiuses, a 30-ft. (9 m) decklength and an 8-ft. 6-in. (2.6 m)

deck width. And, like all its trailers,Talbert manufactures the 65SAwith heavy-duty T-1, 100,000-psiminimum yield steel. Optionaldeck lengths, deck types, andwidths of 9, 9 ft. 6 in., and 10 ft.(2.7, 2.9 and 3 m) also are avail-able..The standard 65SA model has

three different capacity ratings: 65tons (59 t) in a 15-ft. (4.6 m), 2-point rigid load base as a 3+2spread-axle trailer with 30 ft. (9 m)of deck; 65 tons in a 30-ft., 2-point

rigid load base as a 3+2 spread-axle trailer with the addition of an8-ft. (2.4 m) deck insert (38 ft.[11.6 m] overall); and 70 tons (63.5t) in a 16-ft. (4.8 m), 2-point rigidload base as a 4-axle trailer with 30ft. of deck. For more information, call

Isuzu Unveils All-New Class 6 F-Series Medium-Duty TruckIsuzu Commercial Truck of America Inc. unveiled an all-

new entry in the Class 6 medium-duty truck segment — the2018 Isuzu FTR. The F-Series truck is slated to go into production in the

United States in mid-2017.“This truck represents our vision of the future of the medi-

um-duty truck industry,” said Shaun Skinner, executive vicepresident and general manager of Isuzu Commercial Truckof America. “As the adult population grows and as peoplemove to urban centers, there will be an increasing need fordelivery trucks that can carry a lot of cargo but at the sametime be fuel efficient, maneuverable, environmentallyfriendly, and that offer a low cost of ownership. The all-newFTR achieves all of these goals.”

PowertrainThe FTR will be powered by Isuzu’s 4HK1-TC 5.2-L tur-

bocharged four-cylinder diesel engine — a first in the seg-ment. “As fuel economy and emissions regulations become

stricter, you’re going to see more and more competitors inthis class turning to four-cylinder engines,” Skinner said.“Isuzu is a pioneer in developing and building four-cylindertransportation solutions.”Although horsepower and torque ratings have not been

finalized, the company noted that the 4HK1 engine is wellknown for its high torque output. The powerplant will bemated to an Allison 2000 Series automatic transmission. Theengine carries a B10 durability of 310,000 miles — meaningthat 90 percent of engines should reach that mileage before

requiring an overhaul, according to themanufacturer. An incredible cruising distance can be

achieved by the FTR, due not only to thetruck’s miserly use of fuel butalso its available aluminum50 or 100 gal. fuel tank.

Flexibility andCapability

Eight wheelbase configu-rations will accommodatebodies from 16 to 30 ft. (4.8to 9 m), allowing for a widevariety of body applica-tions.The all-new cab features a

clean back-of-cab design thatcan provide more space for body applicationscompared to the previous F-Series truck.Like all Isuzu trucks, the FTR will feature a low-cab-for-

ward design that increases visibility and markedly improvesmaneuverability — especially important in the crowded citycenters where the FTR is expected to be in greatest demand. “With a 50-degree wheel cut, there’s not a truck in this

class with a tighter turning radius,” Skinner said.

Interior DesignThe FTR cab’s wide step and wide-opening doors allow

easy entry to the spacious interior, which features three-

across seating and extra spacefor storage behind the seats.Additional interior ameni-

ties include a side under safe-ty mirror, overhead console, and a suspension driver’s seatwith armrest speciallydesigned to increase comfortand reduce driver fatigue.

Additional DetailsPricing, available configurations,

power ratings and additional fea-tures and specifications will be released in

mid-2017. “The overall concept of the FTR is to bring to our cus-

tomers the next generation medium-duty low-cab-forwardtruck, one that features a clean, durable, highly efficient four-cylinder engine and is the best Class 6 choice for pickup anddelivery in cities,” Skinner said. “The letters ‘FTR’ don’tstand for ‘future,’ but this truck represents the future, and itwill be here — soon.” For more information, call 866/441-9638 or visit

(10,208.5 t) of asphalt for the pass-ing lanes. Crews also will lay 532cu. yds. (406.7 cu m) of concrete fora concrete box culvert extension.Tezak Heavy Equipment was

ready to move heavy equipment onsite including multiple excavators, loaders, graders, highway haultrucks and miscellaneous supportequipment.“Our wire mesh installation sub-

contractor will have a crane on siteto drill the anchors for the wiremesh,” Swift said. “Once asphaltpaving commences, our pavingsubcontractor will have a largepaving crew on site with multiplerollers, asphalt paver and multiplehaul trucks on site as well.” Subcontractors for the project

include A & S Construction ofThornton, Colo.; AdvancedShoring and Underpinning of Lehi,Utah; Baerren ConcreteConstruction of Littleton, Colo.;Hutton Concrete Cutting ofPueblo, Colo.; Montano Concreteof Pueblo, Colo.; and TraxConstruction of Colorado Springs,Colo. A total of 16 subcontractors

will have been used by the time theproject concludes.Tezak Heavy Equipment will

have about 14 workers on the jobeach day. Subcontractors will rangefrom five to 15 workers daily.

U.S. 24 Is a MajorThoroughfare

U.S. Route 24 is a major east-west route in Colorado. It traversesthe Rocky Mountains, starting nearMinturn. It then continues east for

about 30 mi. (48.3 km) toLeadville where it turns south andgoes to Buena Vista where itbecomes concurrent with U.S. 285.The route was originally built in

1936.

Travel Impacts The Colorado Department of

Transportation reports that travel-ers will be subject to some single-lane travel from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.Monday through Friday. Reports

on lane closures can be found atwww.codot.gov/travel/scheduled-lane-closures.html. Speed limit will be reduced to

40 mph through the constructionzone. No night or weekend work is

currently scheduled for the project.

Project Challenges“The biggest challenge we had

on the project was rock excava-tion-blasting,” Swift said. “Due to

the limited right of way and thecondition of the existing rock for-mation, we had to be extremelycautious during rock blasting androck removal. We are pleased tosay that this project had 17,672.25of manpower hours with noreportable accidents.”

Fuchs MHL340 E Material HandlerBoasts Powerful Engine, Long Reach

The Fuchs MHL340 E material handler boasts a powerfuland fuel efficient 173 hp (129 kW) turbocharged dieselengine, offering the power required to handle the most diffi-cult tasks while saving on fuel costs. Operations can equipthe MHL340 E with multiple boom and stick configurationsfor up to a 44.9-ft. (13.7 m) reach, including a 40-ft. (12.2 m)multi-purpose stick built with a stick-mounted hydrauliccylinder to allow up and down movement of the attachment, increasing efficiency in sorting applications. Its combinationof power and long reach makes the versatile MHL340 Ematerial handler a preferred model for a broad range ofindoor and outdoor applications, including work at scrapmetal feeder yards, municipal solid waste (MSW) process-ing at recycling/recovery facilities (MRFs) and sorting mate-rial at transfer stations, according to the manufacturer. To lower long-term operating costs, the MHL340 E han-

dler features three-stage engine “Eco mode” operation to sig-nificantly cut fuel consumption. Conveniently controlled onthe machine’s multifunction button panel, this feature allowsthe operator to match engine speed and power to the task athand. For heavy-duty applications like loading and unload-ing trailers, the operator can select full “power mode.” Whenencountering less demanding tasks such as sorting material, the operator can select “Eco mode” to reduce engine RPMby 12 percent and fuel consumption by up to 27 percent or“Eco+ mode” to reduce engine RPM by up to 19 percent andfuel usage by up to 36 percent. The MHL340 E handler’s high-performance two-circuit

hydraulic system increases main hydraulic pump capacitycompared to previous versions, improving efficiency andmachine responsiveness. Both the engine and hydraulic sys-tem include large cooling systems protected by vented pan-els that provide clear airflow, so the material handler runscooler in high ambient temperatures. Its hydraulically height-adjustable cab gives operators a

maximum eye-level elevation of up to 17.7-ft (5.4-m) aboveground level, simplifying loading and unloading operations. The cushioned cab elevation system provides absorption ofshocks and jolts for operator comfort. Inside the spacious cab, ergonomically positioned controls

improve operator productivity and comfort. A large high res-olution/high contrast wide video graphics array color displayfeatures an antiglare shield and scratch-resistant coating foreasy viewing in direct sunlight and improved durability.Color video of the work area behind the machine is capturedby the standard rearview camera and shown on the monitorfor easy viewing by the operator. Intuitive controls, includ-ing quick-access push buttons for frequently used functions, make for a short learning curve of MHL340 E handler oper-ation, and the ergonomic multifunction button deliverseffortless fingertip navigation through the display screens. The machine’s convenient stow-away ladder offers quick

access to the engine, central lubrication system and large areaplatform of the upper carriage service deck. The large cool-ers for the engine and hydraulic system are lockable andreadily accessed from ground level. Additional CAN Busconnections expand diagnostic capabilities, so service tech-nicians can quickly identify and address underlying issues. Offering four-wheel drive, the Fuchs MHL340 handler

has a 12.4 mph (20 kmh) maximum speed to quickly movearound the yard, while its 27-degree steering angle helps toefficiently maneuver around obstructions. A double-rowslewing ring design disperses forces over two rows of bear-ings to improve component service life and durability.Inverted hydraulic boom cylinder mounting and rigidhydraulic pipes located on the stick, boom and undercarriageoffers superior protection against damage. Lokotrack® ST2.8™ exceeds expectations in making a clean cement additive

That’s how we make the big di erence, the Metso Way.

A Lokotrack ST2.8 mobile scalping screen is helping a cement plant produce a clean additive for its production process, resulting in signi cant cost savings. The operator is saving up to $20 a ton by producing the additive using the ST2.8, rather than buying it from an outside source.

The Lokotrack ST2.8 has a larger throw than most machines in its size class, which allows it to produce a cleaner end product. The unit’s powerful Caterpillar C4.4 diesel engine meets the latest emissions standards, and a new hydraulic system helps to reduce fuel consumption.

Yahara Materials Meets Demand for Clear Stone Products

Increasing production and maximizingthroughput is nothing new. In fact, next tosizing accuracy, a recent survey shows thatthroughput is the second largest concernamongst producers, when surveyed to rankthe factors most important when selectingscreening media. But what happens whenexternal factors such as market growth andadverse weather conditions impact youroperation’s ability to meet the increasingdemand and capture your market share? Here’s how one producer teamed with hislocal screening and crushing field specialist.

Over the past 15 years, Yahara Materialslocated in Waunakee, Wisc., has experienceda dramatic increase in demand for clearstone products. These products are widelyused for underground pipe and highway bed-ding to provide proper drainage. The prod-uct specifications required clean rock withminimal fines. Yahara Materials needed tofind a way to increase its capacity to effec-

tively capture its share of this growing mar-ket.

“We experienced a 15 percent increase inour production throughput,” Nick Cady stat-ed.

Yahara Materials operates seven 6 by 20,triple deck, portable crushing plants thatwere equipped with slotted, Tri-Lockscreens. These slotted screens became veryproblematic when faced with ever-changingsoil conditions found at various locations.Due to increased moisture content presentduring the winter and spring months theywere unable to remove enough fines to getthe product within specification. The slottedscreens would blind over, halting productionand minimizing throughput.

Upon the evaluation and recommendationof Rod Skindrud, the local UnifiedScreening & Crushing Company field serv-ice representative, Nick Cady, superintend-ent of operations at Yahara Materials,

changed to a stainless steel “W” style screenon the lower two decks, while the top deckremained a hard drawn, high carbon squareopening, Unified screen, for cost efficiency.

This change greatly increased the flexibil-ity of the screen and increased product flow. The “W” style screen is composed ofstraight tension wires, “W” shaped wires andcustom cross wires. Three different wiresizes are used for a harmonic screeningeffect. This product allows greater open areaand increases throughput with this “harmon-ic effect.” In addition, the “W” slots performwell during wet and difficult screening con-ditions.

“Blinding and sizing problems can beeliminated. We have experienced a 15 per-cent increase to production since the changeout to the “W”-slots and the “W” slotscreens are lasting longer. They are lasting 2to 3 times longer than anything we used in

this application, in the past,” according toNick Cady. “The increase has allowed us toincrease our capacity to capture our share ofthe growing demand for clear stone. Plusthese clean screens have saved us an invest-ment in a new Wash Plant for our concreteapplications. Our production is up, through-put improved, especially in wet conditions, and we’ve saved an additional step in pro-cessing materials. It was a win-win deci-sion.”

Yahara Materials now uses “W” slottedscreens on the bottom two decks of all its 6by 20, Triple Deck plants.

“We have not had to change them out allseason,” said Cady.

Contractor Range Extends JCB’s Hydraulic Breaker Line

JCB now offers double the number ofhydraulic breakers designed to work with itsrange of excavators, backhoe loaders andcompact equipment lines by launching its“Contractor Hammer Range.” Contractorbreakers will be available alongside theexisting professional line of hydraulic ham-mers. Both Professional and Contractorbreakers will come with a three-year war-ranty.

Contractor breakers offer the followingfeatures:

• Complete range for 0.9 to 55 ton(0.8 to 50 t) carrier machines

• Accumulators to protect carriermachinery from hydraulic pressure spikes

• Models above 12.1 tons (11 t) car-rier weight equipped with auto greasing sys-tems

• Two-speed control valves permittool speed and stroke customization above9.9 tons (9 t)

• Internal control valves deliver 10percent efficiency boost

Contractor hydraulic hammers have been

specifically designed as a solution for cus-tomers working in less arduous conditions. They provide a genuine JCB product forusers on a budget who still want a good qual-ity hammer that’s highly productive. Eachhammer has been extensively tested andmatched to work perfectly with JCB carriermachines, according to the manufacturer.

The range includes models from the com-pact HM012T that tips the scales at just220.5 lbs. (100 kg) operating weight to suitcompact excavators, to models designed towork with the largest JCB excavators cur-rently offered in North America, which fallin to the 22-ton (20 t) category. All modelscome backed by a three-year manufacturer’swarranty.

All Contractor breakers have accumula-tors to protect the carrier machine fromhydraulic pressure spikes, reducing possiblewear and tear on the hydraulic system. Theyalso are equipped with auxiliary relief valvesto protect the breaker from damage whenused with other makes of machinery.

Hammers for use with equipment above

12.1 tons in operating weight come as stan-dard with a refillable auto greasing system, ensuring the breaker always receives the cor-rect amount of lubrication throughout theworking day. This cuts downtime and boostsproductivity for the customer. All breakersfeature dust seals to prevent dust ingress andto ensure that lubrication remains inside thehammer body.

The heavier models include twin oval toolretaining pins, which deliver double the lifeof a standard pin, as they can be rotated towear evenly on both sides. Smaller breakersare equipped with a single tool retainer. Two-speed control valves on models above 9.9ton carrier weight allow the operator to cus-tomize tool speed and stroke length, depend-ent on the material that is being broken. Thisincreases productivity and reduces the risk ofdamage to the breaker and the carrier, according to the manufacturer.

Internal control valves deliver up to 10percent higher efficiency against other prod-ucts with external valves. This results in lessmaintenance as the oil flow is improved,

reducing heat build-up in the system andprotecting internal seals. Heavier modelsalso feature blank firing protection, furthercutting the potential for damage to the break-er and wear to the carrier machine.

Contractor breakers use a single scaleddesign with the same maintenance require-ments for each model. This ensures thatdealer and customer service staff, particular-ly in a rental operation, can easily work onall hammers in the range.

All JCB Compact, Contractor andProfessional breakers are delivered ready towork, with the correct mounting bracketsand hydraulic hoses to match a wide range ofJCB equipment. Compatibility is guaran-teed, and the full hydraulic hammer range isbacked by JCB’s service network.
