It's September and that means it's time for Cumberland Valley SHRM's Legal and Legislative conference! Walt Lachenmayr has been working diligently to coordinate the event, which will take place at Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown on Thursday, September 20, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The registration form is attached to this newsletter, so be sure to mark your calendar for that date. Registration at the door will be $80. The conference program has been approved for 5.5 HRCI recertification credits.

The evening of Thursday, August 23, was a special one, as we had our CVSHRM New Member Mixer at Kaplan University. The weather cooperated for the outdoor event in Kaplan’s courtyard, with delicious refreshments provided by Main Street Deli, Chambersburg, PA, as well as ice cream treats from Antietam Dairy, Waynesboro, PA. Kaplan University was a perfect host for the event, which was attended by current CVSHRM members and some members of Kaplan's faculty and staff. We added several new members to our chapter, and I hope that we can make this an annual event. Many thanks to Larry Glenn for arranging the mixer and to Garnet Stevens for serving as the master of ceremonies for the event.

Please mark your calendar for Thursday, November 15, at SpringHill Suites. We will hold a regular monthly meeting that day, with Dr. Lisa Ross speaking to our chapter on a diversity topic.

Walt’s Wallby Walt Lachenmayr, SPHR

There’s been a “bumper crop” of new employment laws that went into effect recently. Before you complain, remember that our profession of human resources didn’t really exist until the creation of numerous labor laws, such as the Wagner Act of 1935. The April 30, 2012, requirement to post an oversized National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) poster listing every possible unfair labor practice known to man was put on hold. However, hang on to that $80 poster from GNeil®. The posting requirement may still go into effect in December. The NLRB didn’t stop there. They issued strict guidelines regarding company limitations on employee social media statements. The “crop” continued to grow with new Supreme Court rulings on retaliation, covered under both the Fair Labor and Standards Act and retaliation against military reservists. The Health Care Reform Act has new requirements that go into effect on a staggered basis. The timelines on getting the Summary of Benefits and Coverage to employees in advance of the new plan year is a new challenge. Not to be outdone, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued new guidelines on using criminal background check information in the hiring decision.

All of these changes in employment law and much more will be covered at the Legal and Legislative Conference on Thursday, September 20, at Fountain Head Country Club by a group of outstanding attorneys. The reference materials from the conference will be published and sent to attendees. Registration is still open at the door. See details in this link:
