One of the strong points that came up in the Gospel
parable last Sunday was that the five virgins who landed
into a mess did not actually do something wrong. This
was as a result of their foolishness, carelessness and
presumptuousness. Theirs, at most could be considered
a sin of omission. This is one of the themes highlighted
in the parable today, as portrayed in the third servant.
While the first and the second servants courageously
embarked in a positive adventure, taking every risk, to
be productive, the third manifested a lazy, pessimistic,
presumptions, grumbling and a totally negative disposi-
tion. They spent their God given time and energy looking
for reasons not to be involved in the day-to-day Chris-
tian activities. Even if our political, social or religious
systems are disappointing us, we know, as Christians
what our responsibilities are and God has given us
enormous graces in terms of talents to carry them out.
Often, as in the business world, we need immense cour-
age or risk to manifest our Christianity.

What is Black Catholic History Month?
On July 24, 1990, the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States designated November as Black Catholic His-tory Month to celebrate the history and heritage of black Cath-olics. November is significant because two important black saints are commemorated within the month: St. Martin de Porres’ feast day (Nov. 3) and St. Augustine’s birthday (Nov. 13). With All Saints and All Souls’ Day, we also remember the saints and souls of Africa and the African Diaspora.
African-American Catholics by the numbers
There are 3 million African-American Catholics in the United States. Of Roman Catholic parishes in the United States, 798 are considered to be predominantly African-American. Most of those continue to be on the East Coast and in the South.
About 76 percent of African-American Catholics are in diverse or shared parishes, and 24 percent are in predominately Afri-can-American parishes.
As of February 2017, there are 15 living African-American bishops, eight of whom remain active, and six U.S. dioceses are headed by African-American bishops. — USCCB
What is the diocese’s African-American Affairs Ministry?
On May 17, 1985, a group of 10 people calling themselves the Committee for Concerned Black Catholics met to discuss issues and concerns that were particular to black Catholics in the dio-cese. They urged then Bishop John Donoghue to coordinate efforts of black Catholics in the diocese.
In July 1985, the ministry was officially begun as the Diocesan Committee on Black Catholic Ministry and Evangelization, and was a part of the diocesan Ministry for Justice and Peace. In 1989 it became a separate office to address and serve the needs and concerns of black Catholics in the diocese.
Since then, the African-American Affairs Ministry has grown. Its main goal is make visible the work, contributions, traditions and culture of black Catholics to the Church and to society, and to propose adequate diocesan responses to racism and other social injustices. — www.charlottediocese.org

- St. Mary’s Church, Greensboro (1928)
- St. Benedict the Moor Church, Winston-Salem (1940)
- St. Helen Mission, Spencer Mountain (early 1900s)

St. Benedict and Good Shepherd Christmas Outreach Project!
Brothers and Sisters, as explained in the bulletin of September 10th 2017, we have not yet com-
pleted our project of sending the barrels of donated items to Cameroon - there were several
problems that arose and only a few of the barrels have arrived. Father Basile will be traveling to
Cameroon by the end of December, precisely on his birthday, December 28th and will also join
in the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of his bishop, Bishop Immanuel Bushu. He hopes there-
fore, to deliver the items in person to the far village of Bekora and to other orphanages where
such simple items are absolutely necessary.
Our help is needed! There is a need of an additional $4000.00 to get the remaining items out of
the seaport to the rural areas of Cameroon. We will hold a second collection each weekend un-
til December 17th in hopes of meeting this goal. In this time of Thanksgiving and Christmas,
let's thank God for all the blessings he has bestowed on us and share with those in need - both
close to home and across the sea! Let's make Father Basile's birthday and Christmas wishes
come to fruition to bring our gifts to our brothers and sisters in Christ!
Please make check's payable to the parish but in the memo note 'for Father Basile.' Both cash
and checks will be accepted. Your generosity is so appreciated!
hemos completado nuestro proyecto de enviar los barriles de artículos donados a Camerún;
