Welcome to Rioja
Welcome to the second Wines from Rioja Annual Trade Tasting!
The inaugural Wines from Rioja tasting in 2013, attended by over 600 members of the UK wine trade,
was a great success and highlighted the enthusiasm for a dedicated Rioja tasting in the UK.
As Rioja’s largest export market, the UK is central to Rioja’s continued success as an internationally
recognised premium wine region, and this tasting offers an unparalleled opportunity to showcase the
quality and diversity of Spain’s flagship wine region.
There’s a diverse range of over 500 red, white and rosé wines from across the Rioja region available to
taste and over 100 wineries represented. Many winemakers and winery representatives are present on
the 81 tables, while separate focus zones will offer themed tastings, shining a light on the breadth of
styles available from the region. For those looking for something new, there’s also a dedicated area for
wineries seeking importers in the UK.
This year we’ve introduced a series of masterclasses to create an added educational element and offer
visitors a further insight into the quality and diversity of the region. These will be led by leading experts
and Rioja enthusiasts Tim Atkin MW, Sarah Jane Evans MW and Ronan Sayburn MS. You can find out
more about their topics on p.105.

Introduction to Rioja
Nestled between the Sierra de Cantabria and the Sierra de la
Demanda, Rioja is perfectly situated for wine production, sheltered
from both the cooling influences of the Atlantic to the north, and the
hot Mediterranean summers to the south.
Rioja’s offering is strikingly diverse – from fresh crisp whites, to complex,
aged Grandes Reservas, and varietal wines from indigenous grapes not
found anywhere else in the world. There’s no such thing as ‘a’ Rioja.
The Rioja region is situated in Spain’s gastronomic heartland, and this long association with food is reflected in the wines, which are exceptionally food-friendly, and lend themselves well to pairing with an array of different cuisines.

Bodegas Valdemar, based in Oyón, is oneof the few producers in Rioja that owns all
of its own vineyards, with over 300haacross the three sub-regions of Baja,
Alavesa and Alta. The winery is very muchforward-looking and is renowned for itspioneering work in the region: it was thefirst to introduce the ‘saignée’ method forRosado wines, and barrel fermentation forwhite wines. More recently, through the
Inspiración range, the winery's philosophyof innovation has continued, by using
indigenous varietals including Maturana,Graciano and Tempranillo Blanco.

Bodegas Campillo is a family owned winery, currently run by Pilar Martínez
Zabala, whose father Don Julio FaustinoMartínez first planted vineyards near the
medieval village of Laguardia in 1978. Thebeautiful winery is surrounded by 50ha
of vineyards with another 150ha of oldervines within a seven mile radius of
Laguardia. Managed in addition the resultis a range of elegant and balanced wineswith good fruit due to the climate. This is
due the combination of the northerly position, the high altitude and limestone
rich soils. Bodegas Campillo is well established in Spain, especially in the
on trade sector.

In the 19th century, Francisco Javier Solano yEulate, owner of a large area of vineyards inVillabuena, on the advice of the famous Bordeaux winemaker of the time, M. Pineau,decided to start making and ageing his winesaccording to methods imported from theMédoc under the label “Marqués de laSolana”. Since then, the winery has changedits name, but not its philosophy. It is still afamily run business with the fourth and fifthgeneration incorporating new ideas andmodern approaches whilst remaining faithfulto the concepts and values since its foundation: family, estate vineyards, respect for quality and work well done.

Bodegas Miguel Ángel Muro comprises35ha of freehold vineyards (79% Tempranillo, 11% Viura, 5% Graciano, 5%Maturana) in the municipal areas of Lapuebla de Labarca and Laguardia, with vines averaging 40 years old. The Muro family has been growing vines for generations. The vineyards are south-facing, receiving a small amount ofrainfall throughout the year. All these characteristics contribute to the excellentpersonality and quality of the grapes andwines. The winery has been updated with250 French and American barrels. The range includes red and white young wineand Crianza, Reserva, high expression and varietal aged wines.

Bodegas Patrocinio is a cooperative located in the village of Uruñuela in Rioja Alta. The higher altitude of the vineyards - 450-590m - ensures finer, moreelegant wines. The co-op’s 200 membersown 600ha divided into 1500 plots, ofwhich 95% is Tempranillo and the rest isGarnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano, and somewhite varieties. The older vines are traditionally gobelet trained, while thenewer vines are cordon trained. The viticultural team spends a lot of time in the vineyards improving techniques andensuring that the best quality grapes arrive at the winery.

Vallemayor, based at Fuenmayor in theRioja Alta, is a close-knit family bodega
producing an impressive range dedicated to quality and value. It is theresult of the vision of Luis Pérez Fonceawho after retirement from working thefamily vineyards began selling wines,
finally making enough money to build hisown winery. Luis’ three sons took over in
1996, registering the new name Vallemayor for the business. They own a
55ha estate, growing predominantlyTempranillo, and have direct control over
a further 60ha of local growers. The winery, built in 1984, combines moderntechnology and traditional methods.

Hacienda el Ternero is an ‘island’ of250ha in Rioja Alta. It dates from the medieval times in 1077 when it belongedto the monastery of Santa María de Herrera. Its history, location and height ofthe vineyards (650 above sea level) makeit a unique place. Bodegas Medrano Irazu is a family winerywhich was founded by Luis Medrano in
1984 joined by his son, Amador, in 2001.The winery emerged with the intention ofbecoming one of the best Rioja wines.The majority of the old vines (30 yearsplus) are located in El Villar at 600m
above sea level in what is considered the“grand cru” area of La Rioja due to the
fine iron-rich, reddish sand on the surfaceand a limestone subsoil. The wines bear
the distinct stamp of the terroir.

In November 1956, a group of growersgot together to form what is knowntoday as Viñedos de Aldenueva. Over acentury has gone by since the first vineswere planted in Aldeanueva. Its excellent climate and rich soils togetherwith the know-how of the local growers,resulted in grapes that were highly valued for their colour and alcohol content. These were - and have continued to be until present day - thebasis of many aged Rioja wines. Grapesof this quality lead to significant demand which meant expanding thevineyards to the current 2,600ha.

White RiojaRioja is often associated with red wine, but the region also produces excellent whitewines. Here is an opportunity to taste through the spectrum - from fresh and crisp,through to barrel-fermented and oak-aged.
Rioja beyond TempranilloTempranillo is the main red grape associated with Rioja, but here is a chance to see thegreat wines Rioja is also producing from Garnacha, Graciano and Maturana.
ContemporaryRioja produces a diverse selection of wines styles from traditional aged to modern.Here, the contemporary styles will be available to taste
ReservaAged for a minimum of 3 years, with at least a year in barrel, the Reserva style isunique to Rioja and offer excellent value for money.
Gran ReservaProduced in top vintages, Gran Reserva wines spend at least 2 years in barrel and 3years in bottle before release and have an exceptional capacity for further ageing.

Tim is an award-winning wine writer and Master of Wine with28 years’ experience. He writes for a number of publications,including The World of Fine Wine, Intelligent Life, GourmetTraveller Wine, Imbibe, Decanter, Wine-Searcher, Fine Drink(China), and Woman and Home, and appears regularly onBBC1’s Saturday Kitchen. Tim is a member of the Three Wine Men, Co-Chairman of the International Wine Challenge and has won over 25 awards for his journalism and photography.
Sarah Jane became a Master of Wine in 2006 and this yearshe was made a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros deVino, only the fourth woman in the organisation’s history, forher services to Spanish wine. In addition to co-chairing theDWWA Spanish panel Sarah Jane has judged wine internationally in Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Georgia,Germany, as well as the UK, she has written three books, currently writes about wine for Decanter and for a number ofconsumer magazines, hosts consumer and specialist wine tastings, and is a former President of the Guild of Food Writers and a Founder Member of the Academy of Chocolate.
Ronan has been involved in the wine business for nearly 20years. He is currently developing his own business - The RSWine Academy - and is a Master Sommelier (one of only 214in the world), previous winner of the UK Sommelier of the Yearcompetition and twice a representative for the UK in the European Sommelier Competition. Ronan is a regular judgefor the Sommelier of the Year Competition and various tastingcompetitions and an examiner for the Court of Master Sommeliers. He previously worked for the Gordon Ramsaygroup as Executive Head Sommelier for eight years plus created the wine lists and trained wine service teams for Claridge’s, the Connaught, the Savoy, Boxwood Café, Mazeand several overseas operations including Dubai, Tokyo and New York.

Rioja Red Grape Varieties
Tempranillo
Considered native to Rioja, Tempranillo is the region’s classic red grapevariety, accounting for more than 75% of vineyard area in Rioja. On itsown it produces soft supple wines, with aromas of soft red summer fruits.Tempranillo produces wines of great structure, wines which can be enjoyed young and fresh for early drinking or matured for many years to become wines renowned for their depth, character and elegance.
Mazuelo
Known as Carignan/Cariñena elsewhere in the world, Mazuelo accountsfor around 3% of plantings in Rioja, and adds colour, weight and tanninsto Tempranillo blends, helping the wine to age gracef ully. Mazuelo on its own is very rare.
Garnacha
This grape variety offers good extract and alcohol content, addingwarmth and spice both for early drinking and longer aged styles of Rioja. Single varietal Garnacha wines are starting to make their way to the UK.
Graciano
Indigenous to Rioja, and rarely seen elsewhere, a small quantity of Graciano adds extra fruit and elegance to a Tempranillo blend, setting itin good stead for extended ageing. Plantings have increased significantlyin recent years, in response to the growing popularity of 100% Gracianowines. As a varietal wine, Graciano shows great character and finesse,producing wines which are often very long lived.
Maturana Tinta
An ancient indigenous Rioja variety no t seen anywhere else in the world,Maturana Tinta was all but extinct until its recent reintroduction, andplantings are now on the increase, as winemakers prize its deep colour,elegant acidity, and balsamic spicy character.

Rioja White Grape Varieties
Viura
Better known as Macabeo elsewhere in Spain, Viura is Rioja’s principal white grape variety, producing wines which are clean, fresh,zesty and lightly herby when young, but which also respond well to being fermented in barrel, developing complex smoky nuances.
Malvasía
Not to be confused with Malvasia grown elsewhere in the world (an entirely different variety), Malvasía de Rioja is used in small quantitiesalongside Viura to make classic oak-aged white wines. Its savoury character combined with the fresh crispness of the Viura and the vanilla of the oak produce wines of great individuality and style.
Garnacha Blanca
Possibly originating as a mutation of red Garnacha, this varietal possesses very similar characteristics to its red counterpart, and can beused in small amounts to add weight and body to Viura wines which areaged for 6 months or more. Small amounts of varietal wines are madefrom Garnacha Blanca grapes from very old vines to produce concentrated and exceptional white wines.
Tempranillo Blanco
Resulting from a natural genetic mutation of red Tempranillo found in an old vineyard in 1988 and not found anywhere else in the world, Tempranillo Blanco is becoming increasingly popular as a blending component, offering an intensely aromatic profile characteristic of citrus, tropical fruit, and bananas.
Maturana Blanca
Rioja’s oldest known variety, Maturana Blanca provides high acidity, and herbal, citrus and apple nuances to blends.
As of 2007, Rioja producers have also been allowed to use the following non-indigenous varieties;Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo in minority percentages in blends to bring diversity to wine production while maintaining the wines’ identity and differentiation.

Rioja Subregions
Rioja AlavesaRioja Alavesa is located in the foothills of the Cantabrian mountains to the north and run to theRiver Ebro in the south. The mountains help create a micro-climate by offering some shelter fromthe Atlantic weather and wind - nonetheless the rainfall here is almost double that of Rioja Baja.Tempranillo reigns in Rioja Alavesa, accounting for around 80% of all plantings in the mostly chalkand clay soils, with Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano contributing to red blends, while Viura, Malvasía and White Garnacha are grown for white wines.
Rioja AltaRioja Alta, to the north-west and south of the Ebro River, stretches as far as the city of Logroño. Elegance and poise is the hallmark of wines made here with Rioja Alta Tempranillo. Mazuelo is occasionally added to wines from this area to add tannins and colour. Rioja Alta's wines have a particular affinity with oak barrels and extended ageing.
Rioja BajaThe Rioja Baja sub-region, which forms the largest portion of Rioja, extends south-east of the provincial capital, Logroño, to the small town of Alfaro. It accounts for 40% of Rioja's wine production, with most of its vineyards located south of the River Ebro. Unlike Rioja Alta and RiojaAlavesa, the Rioja Baja has very warm and dry summers. The chalk content in the soil is minimal,with larger proportions of silt and alluvial components. The low-altitude vineyards here are mostlyplanted with Garnacha vines, as they are best suited to the extreme conditions, producing wineswhich are high in alcohol but lower in acidity and aroma profile
