My dear Parishioners, As you may recall, last week in this space, I focused on a pastor’s need for collaborators in the operation of an effective parish and addressed the role of the ordained ministers and the salaried staff. Today I want to share some information with you about some of the other important volunteer groups with-out whose aid, the parish would fail in its mission: the Parish Pastoral Council and the Parish Finance Council. Parish Pastoral Councils came about as a result of the new direction that Vatican Council II gave the Church, especially in four of its most important documents: The Dogmatic Con-stitution on the Church, The Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, and the Decree on the Apostolate of Lay People. All of these documents stressed the role of all the People of God in the life and ministry of the Church. The importance of lay involvement in the celebration of liturgy is obvious today. Less noticeable but no less important is the involvement of the laity in guiding and managing the life and ministry of the community is the role of the Parish Councils. The Parish Pastoral Council is strongly recommended, and in many dioceses mandated, as is the case of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. The Parish Finance Council and qualifications for membership are mandated by Canon Law. Following Church directives, a pastor appoints members to the Finance Council. But membership on the Pastoral Council can be determined in a variety of ways: appointment by the pastor, nomination and election by the congregation, and by discernment. In recent years, we have used the discernment process and with great results. Any and all parishioners, “baptized, con-firmed, registered, participating and contributing” over 17 years of age are invited to a discernment session which in-cludes prayer to the Holy Spirit, a presentation on the role of the Council, and time for individual reflection followed by a gathering in which the participants share their thoughts with one another. Following this, the individuals are given time to decide whether or not they will offer themselves for member-ship. An affirmative decision is approved by the pastor and the individual becomes a member of the Pastoral Council. The session ends with a prayer of thanksgiving. Council mem-bers serve a three-year term and ordinarily no more than two consecutive terms. To be continued next week. —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

17º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 28 DE JULIO DE 2019

Page 4
