CHURCH ETIQUETTE The Eucharistic Fast: It is a law of the Church that persons receiving the Holy Eucharist abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from any food and drink except for water and medicine. The elderly (those over 60 years of age) and those who care for them can receive holy communion even if they have eaten something beforehand. Also, a priest who celebrates more than one Mass on the same day can eat something before the second or third Masses even if there is less than one hour between them. The Church asks this of us before receiving holy community out of reverence for Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. This is no ordinary food, but “bread from heaven.” Abstinence from ordinary food and drink before communion helps us prepare fittingly for this most intimate encounter with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
My dear Parishioners, The past few weeks have been among the most difficult and painful for many of us priests. I know that we have not been alone in all of this; so many devoted Catholics like yourselves have also been deeply affected by revelations first concerning one of the leading spokespersons for the church in the United States, Theodore McCarrick, and then, like a bombshell, the Grand Jury Report on six Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania—all dealing with the sexual abuse of a thousand children by some 300 priests and the “cover up" by church authorities that extended over a peri-od of 70 years. About a third of those crimes were commit-ted in my home Diocese of Pittsburgh I was deeply shocked and saddened to discover that I personally knew and admired some of those men, never in the world sus-pecting that something so disgusting was going on in their lives. Words fail to describe my personal feelings for those inno-cent victims, for the cunning aggressors and for those who knew the situations but failed to do anything. While I de-test what has happened, I can’t bring myself to judge the guilty because I am aware of my own sinfulness and un-worthiness as a priest to even stand at the altar or sit in the confessional. I suspect that many of my fellow priests feel the same way. My faith tells me that this will not bring an end to the Church though it must certainly lead to a purify-ing reform of clerical life. This will not come about without the involvement of the laity. We all must demand this of church leaders While significant corrective steps have been taken since the Dallas Charter of 2002, we obviously have miles to travel. We priests need the laity—you, and the laity—you, need us. We need to pray for one another, en-courage and correct one another, as we walk together on that straight and steady path in the footsteps of the Good Shepherd. —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

promiso él dijo aquellas palabras belleza y famosas, "En
come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna” (Juan 6,
51, 54). Esta fue una expresión fuerte. No estaba permitido
Jesús no dijo “Estoy bromeando, esperen, estoy hablando
simbólicamente.” No, El preguntó a los doce, “¿Quieren
abandonarme también? Y Pedro respondió por todos noso-
tros, "Señor, ¿a quién iremos?
