A familiar face in Weinland Park politics will soonreturn to civilian life. Term limits are calling for

Joyce Hughes to retire after seven years of tireless

service as president of the Weinland Park Commu-

    nity Civic Association.

Ms. Hughes presidency may be ending, but her

devotion to her community never could. She has

lived in the same home on North 6th Street since

she was six months old. She recalls that WP was

home to many local business owners and all the

properties were well cared for before threedecades of deterioration began in the 1970s.

By 2000, apathy was setting in, but the Weinland

Park Plan launched in 2006, exciting people and

giving them hope. As a child, Ms. Hughes watched

the Columbus Coated Fabrics factory expand

across the lots where her neighbors homes used

to standand this month she will, in turn, proud-

ly attend the groundbreaking of Grant Park, thefuture home of many new neighbors, built on sit

where Columbus Coated Fabrics used to stand.

Ms. Hughes has representing us before City

Council, the University Area Commission, and

countless investors and institutions impacting th

current renaissance. Her approach has always

been to take a 30-foot view, see the challenges

instead of the problems, and do what you have t

do to keep the body-at-large intact. It i s your job

to protect your community at all costs, to standbehind their decisions in spite of your own

    opinions.

She continues to serve as a UAC commission-

er, but this month she opens a new WP chapter

in her life tasked with the duty of watching her

neighbors pick up where she left off.
